IHMb of ii rwuem l'et nd Wrlttr el tti Utt Uanerfttloe. A modest announcement of tlie death at UariUburR en Saturday of Charles Fenno Heffman rcealls a uame that oneo held a conpleuotw plaoe In American lltcrature and which Is ntlll held In high renntd by leading people, though the man who bere It had long since passed from the soenos of aotlvellfo. The career of Oharles Fcnne Heffman really dates back qulte half n centnry. He was ene of the well known New Yerk family, a son of Judge Je;Iau O. Heffman aud a brotber of Otfden Heff mats, and was born In New Yerk city in 1800. He was graduated at Columbia oellego and admitted te the bar at twenty twenty twenty ene, 1)ut literature had mere attractions for him than the law and In 1833 he established the Knickerbocker Magazine, which afterward boeamo se famous. He relinquished the Knickerbocker after a low months te Flint and took charge of the American Monthly Magatint, which had been established by Henry William Herbert. Of this he was chlef editor for manv vears. also editing at the Bame tlme the New Yerk Mirror. In 1835 he pub lished "A Winter In the West," asoiies of sketches of nature and of men that had much te commend them. Thin book was followed by "Wild lioenes in Ferost and Fralrle," tlrst published In Londen, aud by "Qreyslaer," a remance founded en the trial of Deauehamp for the murder of Colonel Sharper, of Kontueky, that met with great success. It is by his reemp, however, that Heffman Is best remember ed, and the several volumes, "The Vigil of Faith," "Laysef the Hudsen," "Leve's Calendar," etc., are prized by collectors of American books. He had a natural feeling for the poetry et Amerlcan landscape and had cultivated the rotlned and graceful style of the Knickerbocker school. In purely lyrie poetry he was mero successful than any of hisoempcers, though his manner was a little tee clese te that of Tem Moero te escape the oharge of imitation. Such songs as "Itosalle Clare," " 'TIsHaid te Share Her Smiles With Many," "Sparkling and Bright, and "The Myrtle and Steel" have net jet lese all tbelr popularity and it is sad w thiuk that the mind which gave the world these bright and graceful lyrics has becu for many years bereft of light. Melng en tlie stags. Suite a sensation has been caused in ety circles in Philadelphia by the announcement that a well known young lady who has been recognized as the load lead ing belle of two assemblies, is going en the stage. She w ;i conspicuous at the assembly of 1833 by the enormous num ber of beuquets with whieh she was leaded. She baa a large fertune lu her own right, and her father is a wealthy Third street broker. The young lady, despite the earnest entreaties and protestations of her relatives and friends, recently began t study under a well known New Yerk teaeher, and is f aid te be an apt pupil. She will probably make ber debut iu the latter irt of next ncasen, and threatens te spend a pile of meney. Thraser a Kind. Rev. Rebert Collyer, Chief Justice Charles P. Daly and Justice Jehn T. Brady have auneunced that among the numerous poets who have striven for tbe prize offered by Mr Barnum for a poem en his white elephant the rhymes of threo are of equal roet'.t se far as they are able te judge, and that the meney should be equally divided among them The names et the fortunate) ones are : Joaquin Miller, ElbridireS. Brooks, of Brooklyn and Mrs. H. S. Dwiuelle. Toe Mi let t and Hest Internal Kemeey.
