Y. la 1870 a young man named Wm. Freeman had leanod a farm near Wolla Wella Wolla vllle. lie bad wet ked lu the neighborhood for aereral year as a farm haud, was a member of the Motlietlist church, and bere an eicellent reputation, His household affairs wero looked after by an elderly woman, wuemj nephew also lived en the farm. Among the places robbed lu 1S77 was a grocery Btore in Wcllsvllle. A per Wen of the goods were feuud lu Freeman's barn, ile was arrested, but protected his innoeonoe, and the general opinion was that he knew nothing of the crime. He was sent te jail at Angelica. As the time for his trial drew near olreunmtanoes pointed strongly toward another person as being the burglar, and Freeman's acquit tal was gonerally expected. Te the Mir. prlse of every one, wheu he was called fcr trial he entered a plea of guilty. In doing se he breke down and begged the court te be lenlent toward him. He wai sentenced te 18 months' lraptlsenmcut In the Erie county jail. In March, 1878, a strong petition was ferwardad te Gov. Robinson from Alleg any county asking for Freem.in's pardon. The Governer notified the prison ntitheiL tics, and directed that the usual medical examination of the prisoner be made. Dr. Slanoek then loarned that Freemau was a woman. 8he was at oueo removed te the women's quarters of the prison. Sbe begged that ttie fast of her disguise should net be made publle, and told the prison authorities the story of her llfe. Her name, she said, was .Mary Ann SchaetlVT. 8be was born en the eceau in 1S53, while her parents wero emigrating te this coun try. After arriving in America they lived in Allegany county. Wheu she was tlve years old her father died, and her mother married agaiu. When was ten years of age her Btep fat'icr told her she must earn her own living, as he was uuable te sup port her. She went out as a servant, but being large for her age and very strong, she made up her mind te put en boy's clothing in order that she might earn larger wages. Her mother was the only oeo who knew of this determination. She worked fur farmers for a season ou thj Erle canal. Hhe then returned te the vi vi cleity of her mother's house. Ne ene tocegnized her, and she worked for ten years Ter different farmeis. When she joined the church in 1873 she longed te resume the clothing of her sex, but she bad passed for a man se long that she was ashamed te confess the truth. She declared that sbe was perfectly inue cent of the crlrae for which she was im prisoned. The guilty person, hbe said, was the uepbew of ttie woman who was her housekeeper, but he had visited her In jail and declared that unless she pleaded guilty te the charge he would kill her be fere she cculd co Irera the court ueue te her home, in case she was acquitted Miss Scbaefer was pardoned in the fall of 1873. Dressed iu her proper clethinc she went at ence tu her mother's. The real burglar escaped arrest by Heeiug from the state. Iu 187'J Miss Schaefer obtained employment in a shoe Btore iu the oil region, where a prosperous grocer married hci. Sbe was left a widow with in a year, and her strange tdery is new recalled by her second marriage, her pres ent husband being a brother u( tbe tirst one.
