"3-M '1JM I' ja.XOem i '- "" ' ?; . 2--,. wmmMtmmmmm- ' t ' T- I A MeetlnB at tbe AI8heM., The peer directors, oeanty omTioa emTioa omTiea cis, sanitary committee, mayor, bed of health and health commissienerJwul a a ieint meeting at the almshouse this Morn ing te have a talk ever the necessities of a new hospital. Peer Director Evans, presided. Tlugh It. Fulton, of the beard of health stated the object of the meeting, that they had met te consider the disease which has been in the city for two months and is still, spreading. The hospital is necessary and the beard of health has been given an additional power by councils te stamp eat tbe disease, and money had been appro priated for that purpose. Mr. Evans (who is from the country) thought that the city ought te pay part of the expense of the erection of the hospital as it would furnish most of the smallpox cases. Mayer MacGenigle stated that tbe city had nothing te de with the erection of the hospital and they might as well ask Col umbia or Strasburg te contribute towards a hospital in case a contageeus disease should break out in either of these places. Councilman Wolf, of the sanitary com cem mittec, said that there was no accommo dation for these sick and the city did net propose te erect a temporary hospital but would wait until a permanent one was completed. Mr. Evans, who seemed te be a growler from the start, wanted te knew if the pre. posed hospital building would be charged water rent by the city. He also complained that the institutions are paying tee much water rent. The mayor informed him that they would be charged water tax, and in regard te the present, they are receiving water cheaper than any one else. If they se desired, a water metro wenld be put in, and they would be charged accordingly. Commissioner Summy thought that the building should be erected en approved plaus. Commissioner Hildebrand stated that he did net agree with his colleagues in regard te tbe erection of a permanent building at this time, but thought a tern, perary structure would de, and if a per -inanent ene was te be made it 6heuld be erected in regular manner by recommen dation of peer directors, grand jury and court. He did net think it practicable te erect a building as the one proposed, in 30 days. After seme mere talk tbe meeting adjourned without coming te auy definite conclusion. HKALTU KKPOKT. The Heullher I lie City Never New Iletler Thin Ne new cum'k of smallpox are jepeitul te day and the few cases in tbe city new under treatment aie all doing well. It may be of interest te statu that there is net a single case of the dUease within thtcc squares of the business centre of the city. The Intelligencer has net failed te announce every case of the disease, aud every death that has occurred. This was doue primal ily, as a safcguaid te citizens, that they might avoid the disease by knowing who had it ; and secondly, te prevent the circulation of exaggerated in mers. It is gratifying te knew that notwith standing a dozen deaths Irem smallpox during the past two months the number of deaths from all causes lias been much below the average. Fredciick Brimmer, who has charge of seven eighths of all the the funerals in the city, gives us the fol lowing htatistics : Funerals iu the city from March 21 'te May 21 (bcfeie there were any cases of smallpox) 52. Frem May 21 te July 21 (the term dur ing which the smallpox provailed) 27. It will thus be seeu that the deaths fr mi all causes, including smallpox, have been only about ene half the numOer that occurred duiiug the same leugth of time before this disease made its appearance. I'.nadexical as it may appear, the much dreaded disease mmuiis te have improved the gcuci.il health of the city. Perhaps the improved atjitary condition of the city has had something te de in lessening the death late. The lieeltM Spariew. Or. Kat, sven in I lie Kurincr.
