An aged man cainc late te Abraham's tent ; The sky was dark, and all tlie plain was bare. He asked ler bread : his strength waj wcll- nlgh spent ; His haggard leek Implored the fndcieat care. Tbcloedwai 01 ought, lie sat with thankful eyes Out spake nogrhce, nor bowed he te waul the cast. Sale-sheltered hum lieuid&tk and angiy Bkica, ' The bounteous tnble seemed a loyal IcaBt. But ere hs hand had touched the tempting fare, The Patriarch rose, and leaning en his red, i "Stranger," lie said, "dost thou net, bow in prayer? Dest thou net tear, dost thou net worship. Ged 7" He answered, " Nay." The Patriaich sadly said: ' Theu hast my pity. Ge ! eat net my bread." Anether came that wild and learlul night. The fierce winds raged, and darker grew the sky; But all the tent was filled with wondrous light. And Abraliaui knew the Lord his Ged was nifcli. " Where is that agtd man 7" the Presence said, " That asked ler shelter Ireru the driving blast? Who made thee master of tby Master's bread ? What right had st thou the wanderer forth te cast?" " Forgive me, Leid,'' the Patilaich answer made, With downcast leek, with bowed and tremb ling knee. " Ah me! the stranger might with me have staid. But, eh my Ged, he would net worship Thee." "I've borne him long," Ged said, " and stl 1 1 wail ; Ceuldst thou net ledge hint one night in thy gate ?" Walter Bruce. Kail way n In Pennsylvania. Germautewn Telegraph. Ten years age the two great states of Pennsylvania and New Yerk, although by far the most populous, the most commer cial and the most industrial in the Union, steed as regards railway mileage for be hind the western states of Illinois and Ohie. This was net caused by deficient enterprise near the east, but partly by the enormous influence wielded here bv the powerful trunk line railroad companies, whose capital and resources had for a long titne been largely employed in obtaining control of all the leading railroads travers ing the erain growing districts of the West. About five years age, however, there began te be visible a very decided change in the situation, whereby the re sources of New Yerk and Pennsylvania were applied te the development of the internal resources of these states by a general extension of their railroad systems by the multiplication of brauches and competing lines. This movement, as re gards our own state of Pennsylvania, has made particular headway, in consequence of the previsions of the new constitution removing all the barriers te the free and unrestricted building of railways, se that at the pretent time capitalists and enter prising business men enjoy peifect liberty of railway building. The result of this freedom has been the additieu of at least two thousand miles of new railway te the total previously in operation. Ner has this been doue in such a way as te injure the business of the empanies previously in existence, since it is a matter of notoriety that their receipts, their net profits and their general trade are all higher aud better new than ever before. Indeed, it is a well established fact, that while many of these lines were built especially with a view te securing the through business, the whole body of them are able te pay expenses exclusively out of the leceipts from the way traffic. Iu view of this fact, which seems te be true also of the railways of New Yerk state, we cannot resist the belief that two thou sand mere miles of railway miht prelita bly be created in our own commonwealth without injuring in any way the business of the existing system. We are very strongly inclined te believe also that while these new railways iu Pennsylvania have had in view chiefly the gradual develop ment of the industrial resources, they have also in a large measure led te the increase of the area of agriculture aad greatly enhanced the volutne and value of the products of the farm, the orchard, the forest, the vineyard and the garden. Hence we say, let railroad building go en in this state as enterprisingly as possible Ballread Mews. Frederick J. Slade, of theTienteu water power company, says the negotiations for the purchase of the water power by the Reading railroad company, iu order te se cure the right of way for a track into the milling district, are net yet completed, but may be in a day or two. It is said the Pennsylvania tailread company is also endeavoring te get possession of the right of way, in order te keep the Reading com pany out. An application was filed in the Dauphin reunty court, yesterday, by Attorney Gen eral Cassidy ler a writ of quo warrante te oempel the Pennsylvania and Western railroad company te show by what author ity it exercises the franchises, rights and privileges te construct and maintain rail roads in L coming, Clinten, Centre and Clearfield counties, in this state. The wnt was granted and made returnable in September. The recent Bale of the People's Pas senger railway, in Baltimore, having been set aside by the court, it was again sold at auction yesterday afternoon, and brought iuu, vuu. CRIME AND CALAMITY. Deuble Tragedy eua 'lennis U round. The picturesque town of Bedford, Eng., is in the greatest excitement ever a thrill inglawn tennis tragedy. A party were playing lawn tennis near the Ship Inn. at St. Cuthbert's, situated in the centre of the town. Among the nlavers were Mr. De Vere, a young army officer, and Miss Aicnay, an exceedingly pretty young lady, twenty years of age. Suddenly and with out epparent provocation De Vere pulled out a revolver and shot Miss McKay dead en the spot. Before he could be seized he put the revolver te his ear and blew out liia own brains. Great excitement pre vails, both victims being well known in society, and in both cases the only surviv ing parents are widow. It is believed 'that jealousy was the motive of the crime.
