Medical and Eurglcal Beperter. The Southern Clinic of last year contain ed a contribution from the pen of Dr. De De Cailhel, of St. Leuis, Me., styled, "Va "Va reolaits treatment, its prophylaxis," in the reading of which I was much inter ested, although unable te agree with the writer in his riews respecting the inutility of vaccination. It was with what he styles the French abortive treatment I felt meBt interest. The doctor states that during his' last sojourn in Paris, Dr. Mene, con nected with one of the children's hospitals of that city, explained te him the benefit of his (Dr. M's.1 abortive treatment of variela, and that since his return te the United States he has tested his efficacy frequently, and has recommended it te manv nt hi brother nractitiencrS with anfUfaetm-v rARnltR. This W38 the USD of salicylic acid. Having been practicing medicine bo be tween twenty and thirty years, I have had during that time hundreds of cases of variela te treat, the disgusting character of which, together with the eiten unsat isfactory results, made me wish for some better methods of treatment than that usually resorted te, and desirous of trying this te me new remedy. It was net until April last that I had an onDertunitv of testine its action, when I was sent for te see Mr. W , aged 74 vears. I found him literally covered with varielas eruptions in the vesicular stage, and commencing te umbilicate. He had up te this time ordinary geed health, but was somewhat enfeebled by age. Te prevent injury through fear, it was thought best te conceal from him his true condition, and he was led te belie ve that he was suffering from nettle rash, and was net aware of the reality until well, he that en one occasion of my visit he said te me, " Docter, I thiuk I ence had a liorse that had the sainu disoase I have," and then went en te describe the condition of the animal. I need net hay that we were amused. I immediately commenced the giving of salicylic acid in doses of ten graiu8. It was civen regularly every three hours, day and night, in a liquid form combined with rausilage. On the thitd day of its administration the pustules' began te abort, their contents absorbed gradually, leaving a pale, thin scab, or scale, much resembling a minute lish scale. These scales separated se ra pidly that large quantities were removed each morning when changing the bed liuen. In two wveks the pitieut. w.is convales cent, after which the remedy was contin ued one week longer in scitne dose three times a day. He is new as well as beieie the attack. The result has been most satisfactory. The loathsome discase is robbed of its horrors by this remedy. Ne pitting, no disfiguifmcnt. I would earn estly call the attention or my professional brethren te its use. It is tiue. I have but the one cafe te offer ; but had I a thousand nicie te ticat, I would use it in all. Neil Hearing Apple 'Irees. FertllO iNTKLLldKIiCr!!. New is the time ( about the 20th of June) te peel jour non-beating apple trees. (Jut with a drawing knife near th bise of the tiee upwards ; then near the limbs downwards ; pjel Mm buk clean from the trunk of the tree ; sap will then run out of the top bark and cover the peeled trunk with a gum. Thit at once forms new bark. This treatment will make a gieat improvement en a peer bearer, or en a wild tree that bears peer fruit. Set up a beard te shield from sun and wind, se that the sap will net be diied up before covering all the peeled wood wood weed No danger of killing the tree. I have made geed bearers out of scrubs time and again. Let some of your heiticultmistB experiment. S. E. Kr.M.Rii. Ceni:wa(50, Lancaster county, Pa UfHVlAl. JfOMBW. Can't Say Knuugh.
