I must He down and sleep ; Hew long I knew net. Through the darkening air Otmy worn seulstrange thoughts and fancies fare. Seme steal like solemn phantoms silent by, Lifting cold eyes that glitter warning!? -Seme, with atrial swiftness, flit and pass, Like birds et night o'er dead autumnal grass ; And some, scarce glimpsed athwart the twi light glow, Glance bat-like, with black pinions, te aad fro; While Irem atar a dreary wled, whose breath Seems sick with odors of some place el death. Means around me, with the low, halt-muffled fall Of music walling a faneral call. . Oh, wind of wee, through skies of ghostly gray! Oh, mournful closing of a mourn Jul nay! YiTeulil heaven that even new, at this late neur, Fate could uplift me en a storm et power, Nerve the frail limbs, roll back the ebbing lire, And whirl me te the Inmost heart et strife, Where, from some hallowed held by heroes trod -v Jly soul might pass en cloud and Are te Ged! Paul Hayne ' COME TO THY TEMP LB,. Come te Thy tcmple here en earth. Be Theu my spirit's guest, Who glveat us et mortal birth A second birth mere blest ; Spirit beloved. Theu mighty Lord, Who with the Father and the Sen Keignest upon an equal throne, Art equally adored ! Oh, enter, let me feel auil knew Thy mighty power within, That can alone our help bestow. And rescue us lrem sin. Oli cleanse my soul and make It white. That I with heart unstaln'd and true, May dally render service due. And honor Thee aright. Paxil Gerhardt. FAKAI MUTES. Frem the "Ucrmantewn Telegraph." Every farmer should sew a patau, of even a quarter or half an acre, of millet frr cbicken feed. Fowls are very fend of it, and it is very fattening. It should net be sewn before the middle of May. Hun garian grass is a species of millet, but it does net grew se tall and the grains or seeds are net se large, productive or nu tritious as the common kind, though su perior as a fodder for cattle-feeding. If the patch is chosen where there is a little cover near, it will afford the fanner in the latter part of August, September and a portion of October, te supply his table with fat, delicious reed-birds, which millet invari ably attracts, generally in large numbers, which can be shot with very little trouble or less of time. A Simple ana Uhcep Insect uestrojer. We regard the Londen Garden te be geed authority in horticultural matters in England whatever it may be in the United States. Still, in matters of insect remedies they will act the same in both countries. It mentions a remedy for the green and black aphides and thrips, which is found te be very effectual. It is te bruise 40 pounds of common laurel leaves and young sheets, put in a kettle with 30 gallons of water, let boil an hour, when it becomes very poisonous. It was used last aeaseu, and while it destroyed the hiheets, no ill rehults were found te the teuderest plants. It was resorted te after all ether known " lemedies " were tried. A supply should always be kept en hand. If sprinkled ever fruit upon trees, &c, it should be washed off before it lias time te dry upon the fruit. Of course this requires care. Feed tne Grape Tine. The eldest grape growers we knew al ways manured their vines plenteously and never dreamed of giving them tee much. Of late years there has arisen a class of grape growers who contend that but little manure is needed ; that in fact the poorer the land the better. We are net among this class. We have found that the richer tbe soil the better. We have known even dead animals te be buried about the roots though we think that this is carrying the manure question a little tee far. Vines win sometimes fail iu rich land, we are aware, but it is from ether causes than the soil being tee rich ; there are ether plagues in the way. It may be the mil dew, it may be the little dusty loekiug worm which sometimes strips the vines of its foliage ; or it may be the phyllexera which attacks the roots and plays havoe with them ; ethers think there is some thing in the climate, and se ou. We de net pretend te decide the question ; we only knew that if we de the best we can in the cultivation of the vines, succeas will reward us in a majority of cases ; but when failure is the result we feel very sui e that it is net high feeding. The grape vine, we are oenQdont, and all our expe rience gees te show it, is a geed liver and we run far less risk in overfeeding thau in starving it. Garden Labeln. It is laid down as au axiom that the mere saviug by growing one's own vege tables is net all the profit. The pleasure of seeing things grew, and the comparisons which one is able te make between one variety and another, have a geed deal te de with the satisfaction which a well-kept vegetable garden gives. Yet this latter pleasure is often lest en account of indiffer ence or carelessness in labeling the v.i rietes when the seeds are sewn. It is extremely mortifying te take a friend through the garden, and when he admires the particular bean or pea te be unable te remember what they are, and se en all through. Sometimes we Mud that apiece of chip has been stuck in aid penciled with the name, but that is long since illegible. Fcr garden labels there is nothing yet discovered superior te pine sticks cut into lengths of say teu te twelve iaehes, split thin, one side shaved with a pocket-knife, and then very lightly painted with white-lead, and firmly writ ten en with a pencil. Every garden should be provided with about a hundred of these and they should be kept conveniently at hand, se as te be just within reach when wanted. This is a hint which may seem te be of the ever-practical kind. Ne doubt everybody feels that he " knows already." Perhaps he does, but from the number whom we bee neglect it, we feel sure that the hint will net be wholly thrown away. hvmcial MOTIVES.
