Tlielr Aid in Party Organization. Lancaster, Pa., May 1, 1883. Te the Members of the Jcffersenian Democratic Association of Yerk: Gentlemen : I acknowledge the notifi cation by your president, Hen. Chauncey F. Black of my election te honorary mem bership in your organization ; my appre ciation of the honor conferred by your partiality and my acceptance of such membership are quickened by an examin ation of the documents which I have re ceived, setting forth the objects of your association and the testimony of the dis tinguished Democrats who have been in vited te its fellowship. Bearing the honored name of him who was the author of the Declaration, the foremost exponent of our constitutional system, the founder of the Democratic party and who never abated his faith in the government of the people by them selves, you may with righteous confidence in the perennial efficacy of his principles reassert them as a living political faith. My present official concern for the most npnrlv nerfect oreanizatien of the Dome- rafin n.-rtv in this state will justify me. in eTiirpRsinf the high estimate which Ft cot- nnnn the influence of a net work of such associations as yours. If their organ ization were extended throughout the state their rolls would represent a great body of its most intelligent and active Democrats, whose united thought and ae tien could net fail te powerfully and bene ficially influence the sentiment of the party. The effect would be te educate speakers and writers who could appeal with conviction te the individual judg ment of the voters at a time like this, when in the reaction against political "bosses" and "machines" the power of such appeal te common sense and common honesty is greatly heightened. It is the happy fortuue of these who held te the Democratic faith that Mieycan rifThnl te " co un the river of time te the first fountains of geed and evil." It only needs that the generations .should knew the Jeflerseui.m principles te vote tlicm into ettbet. The time has ceme in this state te prove the superior wisdom of an organization in detail, "from the people up." In that work I recognize no mere important factor thau associations which will net disband after an election nor wait for the bugle of a convention te call them iute action ; but which will labor unceasingly, month after mouth, and especially in the season when men's minds are least inflamed with party zeal and most open te the truth dis passionately stated te spread the funda mental ideas of Democracy. Resides the immediate practical aid furnished te the regular party organiza tion, such a system of voluntary assecia tiens would prometo party unity by direct ing the attention of Democrats every where te the vital, underlying basis of their principles ; they would present open doers te these who, through Laber, Grange, or Anti-monopoly associations, new with hen est purpose, but scattering and ineffectual force pretest against evils which have been infused into our institutions only by de partures from the Jcffersenian ways ; tbey would successfully appeal te the pride and interest of the individual voter in the cx cx ercise of his rights and privileges as the unit in our political system ; feicigu born, as well as native citizens, would speedily lccegnize the distinction between that party which has maintained the inheritance of Jcffersenian tolerance and freedom, and that which is the legitimate heir te the spirit of prescription and tyranny that has peiiedically appeared under new names and forms, but with unchanged purposes, and has never failed te meet with popular condemnation when fairly submitted te the decision of the ballet box ; and the young men of the State and country, disgusted with the debauchery of liepub lican rule, would naturally fleck with au enthusiasm te a standaid which has em blazoned upon it the premiso and the po tency, as well, of better things. Yeu have anticipated one objection which might ari3e te your association by the declaration that you will "as an or ganized body, take no part in struggles at primary or delegate elections, nor sutter any person, under any circumstances, te make his membership a stepping stone te public office." With your purposes thus clearly defined and approved by the eminent authorities who have united with you te prometo them, it is no occasion for surprise that stncu your first organization there has been such a general response of approval. Similar and sister associations are forming in dif ferent quarters of the state, old establish ed party societies are taking en the name and taking up the sjirit of yours, until their example has excited emulation even in ether states. With a general Jcfiareniau revival, there must be assured the fidelity ei the party te itself, and in that is the cei tain premiso of its trinmp'i. Such a lesult we can forecast with far les3 gratification, because of approaching partisan ad van tages than because of the vindication it will afford of the high faith in which these illustrious men lived and died who, when they had founded our tree institu tiens, established the Democratic party te protect and preserve thorn.
