LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, FRIDAY, MAY 4. 1883. Hancastcr $ nielltgenm:. FRIDAY EVENING, MAT 4, 1883. GLEAM FIELDS AND HKAVK CROPS. Seme Suggestion! About Cultivation. Country Gentleman. There are two drawbacks in the methods largely adopted by the farmers of this country in the cultivation of their crops during the first half of the reason. These methods involve a needless expen diture, of labor and permit an extensive growth of weeds. The surface of the soil is net broken or stirred often enough. A frequent pulverization would accomplish two very important uses, namely, the destruction of veunc weeds and an increased growth of the crops. "We have shown en former occasions the importance of destroying weeds just as they are commencing growth, and even bofeie they have reached the surface of the ground, when the minute and tender sprouts are bieken by a touch of the pul verizing instrument. The experiment was tried a few years age of passing the bteel rake weekly ever a given measured surface in the garden, and allowing alongside an equal acre te beceme covered with a gi ewth of weeds from six inches te a feet high before killing them. A lecerd was made by the watch of the time consumed by each method. During the two months of growth it was necessary te pass the steel rake eight times ever the surface ; but this was done se rapidly that only ene half et the time and labor wcie consumed that were required te clear out once the tall weeds from the growing crop. The crop made one-half mere growth by the lirst method, and the seeds of the weeds in the surface soil were thoroughly destroyed by the eight operations. A successful farmer, en whose rich fields about 00 bushels of corn per acre were obtained by ordinal y management, assures us that by passing the cultivator once a week between the rows, until the corn was as high as the horse's back, he had increased the crop te between CO end 70 bushels per acre. A radical improvement would be made en many farms by the adoption of the practice of keeping the surface-crust of the soil constantly bieken, aud by never allowing your weeds te see daylight, liy thus clearing the farm et foul seeds, in a few years the costly labor of baud-weed ing would be neaily superseded. Je ac- cemplish this result it is necessary te se cure the best modern tools for cultivating the crops. The work Bheuld be com menced before the young weeds have reached the surface. Potatoes, for instance, are some weeks in the soil bufoie coming up, aud during this period the ground should be kept harrowed, the operation being repeated as often as the young weeds in the soil have sprouted, the har rowing breaking the sprouts ami killing the weeds just as they are starling te glow. In this way the foul stulF may be mate ri ally reduced. The harrowing may be continued after the potatoes have reached the surface, and have grown seme inches, without injury te them. Cern may be harrowed once befere it comes up ; aud with a line, slant-teeth harrow the opera tion may be coutiuued every live days till the plants are nearly a feet high. This will ebviate the labor of hand hoeing. After this, the one-heiso cultivator may pass several times, running shallow se as net te tear the roots, setting the reversi ble teeth first te threw the earth away from the row of corn, and next time against the row, a very shal low ridge being suflieicnt te cover ihe young weeds as they are just ippearing for theie will be no large ones if the previous work has been promptly attended te. "We have adopted this course of first harrowing and thou cultivating from aud towards the row, aud left the field as clear au a lloer without any band band hecing. The repeatcd stirriug of the soil and keeping the crust broken, gave a handsome crop of corn decidedly largei than when the whele treatment consisted of one or two dressings with the cultivator aud a laborious "hilling" with the hoe.
