AN AACIKNT STEED. Tbe Creature Which Wan Fixed Vp and Beld ler a Seveu Year Old. Philadelphia Times. Edward Partridge who has a restaurant at 13 North Eighth street, wanted te buy a horse. He saw-tbe advertisement ou April 17. of an animal which was offered for sale for $500, at a private stable at 531 China street. He visited the place and uncon sciously fell into the hands of Edward McKnight, a professional herse sharper, from Bosten. McKnight pretended that the beast had cost $1,400, and was part of his father's estate and was net sold for want of nieny. Net at all. Iu fact. McKnight seemed cast down by the threught of parting with the steed, which he represented te be only seven years old. Mr. Partridge who confessed himself no judge of horseflesh, bought the beast for $350 and received a writteu guarantee from McKuigut that he would refund the money if the horse proved unsatisfactory. Mr. Partridge's lirst discevery was that the animal could net cat. He sent him te Jehn Lurzalere.at Bread aud Weed streets, with orders te sell him at any price. A visitor examined the herse and reared with laughter. "What ! that there boss seven years old !" he shouted. " Why, he's just twenty seven." He explained that it had been owned by Charles Smith, near Had Had denfield, N J., for twenty years and he had sent it te the bazaar, whero it was sold ou Saturday, April 1-1, for $G8. It was returned en account of a fault iu oue hoof, and was sold again ou the next Monday for $70. It was discovered that McKnight was the purchaser, and, after having the herse clipped and dosed up with roedicina te make him spirited, he sold him the the next day te Mr. Partridge. Mr. Lar zelcre obtained $G1 for the deceptive steed. Mr. Partridge get a warrant yesterday from Magistrate Lardner, and Detectives Kingsten aud Whiteman arrested Mc Knight and hi? hostler, Philip Connelly. Mr. Partridge testified hew he had beeu " bitten" in the transaction. Mr. Larzalore provoked a laugh by the declaration of the great aue of the herse, and Detective Kingsteu said he had evidence that McKnight had swindled ethers and was fresh from Wew Yerk aud Bosten. MeKtiig'ut's actum plice had lied. The prisener offered te refund Mr. Partridge's $350 te have the suit withdrawn, but was put under $1,000 "bail for a further hearing. Ceuuclly was released.
