She held that the nature of the calling is inherently degrad img. She was never in the hands of her tiring women, undergoing the transforma-tie-into a character which she was te per per per oeify, without being penetrated with a ease of the hollowness and mockery of the business in which she was engaged. If 7iehad strength te withstand the evil influence of such a pursuit, she is one of a thousand, and her testimony ought te be held in honor when the vexed question of the moral influence et the stage is dis cussed. In her early study of the Bible lies the secret of Fanny Kemble's judgment of the profession, and her own noble preser vation in spite of it and her surround ings. That there are ethers in similar pursuits, "like Abdiel, faithful where ethera fail, is net denied. But if there are many who have steed firm in the midst of danger and have declared their indebtedness te the Bible, I have net met with their names. These are Fanny Kemble's impressions of tbe Bible and of the stage. She owed much te the first, she despised the ether. It is very evident tbat our Madagascar neighbors are net well acquainted with the history of our country. On Thursday afternoon, while standing at the tomb of Washington, at Mount Vernen, the vener able Secretary Frelinghuysen was bending low, apparently in a deep study, when one of the envoys turned te tbe interpreter and asked what troubled the secretary. The interpreter explained that it was cus tomary in the United States for great men te weep vrtten in the presence of departed greatness, and that Secretary Frelinghuy sen was, no doubt, thinking of the valor eub deeds of the great Washington, and it made him sad. "Who was this Washington?" asked the envoy. The interpreter briefly stated that Gen. Washington was one of the first te take iid arms in defence of the colonies, and that he was the first president of the United States, and was reverentially called the Father of his Country. The envoy in a few minutes walked ever te where Mr. Frelinghuysen steed, and, looking up into his sad face, said, in a Borrewful tone : " Old man, why wasn't you the father of your country? Ain't you old enough ?" When this little speech was translated te the secretary he walked off, and did net during the rest of the day appear friendly with the inquisitive envoy.
