THE TOBACCO MARKET, IN WAKEHOU3K AND THE IISlU. New Yerk and Havana Market Tne Lan caster Trade Beeent Sales la This Vicinity Tbe Crap Moving Kapldly. V. s. Tobacco Journal. It is a settled point new that before May 1st no great improvement in bnsinees can take place. The time which must elapse before rebate claims can be cashed forces cigar jobbers te reduce their already small stocks te the smallest possible size, and consequently cigar manufacturers are once mere experiencing a disagreeable idleness. Such a stoppage of operations is a less which can never be retrieved ; and no matter hew brisk business may be after May 1, in tbe cigar manufacturing line, the empty past cannot be filled. A great stock of leaf is new in the mar ket, another crop is advancing toward a marketable condition, and with the only partly successful attempt te check tbe im portation of Sumatra, the outlook for the realization of geed prices is anything but problematic. Operators in '82 crops will de well te consider these facts. They cannot buy the tobacco cheap enough. They may argue that if tbey can eiler fine running lets at 15, 1C, 17 or 18 cents there will be plenty of buyers because a year or two age 20, 22 and 25 cents were paid. Five or six years of prices like the last named have accustomed the ear te them, and there fore reductions such as referred te appear, at first, immense. It is all a delusion. The situations demand the payment of ex tremely low prices for new tobacco. We must clear our markets of their surplus by exporting it and by undermining Suma tra. Beth can only be effected by carry ing out the above suggestion. The sales of tbe week were as fellows : Pennsylvania Crep '80 : 250 cases ; fillers, 7 cents ; running, 10 te 14 cents. Ohie Crep '80 : 300 cases, at 5, 6, CJ and 6 cents Connecticut Crep 81 : 200 cases wrap pers, at 16 te 35 cents. "Wisconsin Crep '81 : 100 cases Havana seed, at 15 te 18 cents. New Yerk Crep '81 : 100 cases Havana seed, at 22 cents. Sumatra Market active Sales 300 bales at $1 te 81.50. Havana Market fair. Fine goods have become such a scarcity that for the little te be found figures as high as $1.35 are paid. Tbe rniladelpbla Market. Leaf. Seed Leaf An unexpected dullness has overtaken the handlers of cigar leaf. Manufacturers have suddenly called a halt, and for no ether reason than the want of positive knowledge as te when and hew drawback will be arranged. This, hew. ever, cannot last long, as stock must be had ; thcrefore we hope seen te report mere favorable news. Stocks in the hands of dealers are excellent, se that the out look for prime cigars Dever was better. Sumatra continues te find willing buy ers in moderate quantities. Receipts for the week 371 cases Con necticut, 3G4 cases Pennsylvania, 23 cases Ohie, 49 cases Wisconsin,' 81 cases Yerk state seed, 116 bales Havana, 17 bales Sumatra, and 396 bhds Virginia and West ern leaf tobacco. Gans' Sen & Ce., tobacco brokers, Ne. 131 Water street, New Yerk, for the week ending March 19, 1883: 300 cases 1880 Pennsylvania, 915e ; 100 cases 1881 New England, 16(e)35c ; 200 cases 1881 Ohie, 5j5c; 150 cases 1881 Wisconsin Havana, I420c. Total 750 cases. THE LOCAL MAUKKf. A Fair Proportion of the Crep or 'HZ Sold. A few hundred cases of old tobacco were sold during the past week and we hear of several large sales under negotia tion but net yet consummated. Although the demand for old tobacco has net been very active, holders, seem m no hurry te sell, evidently expecting an advance in the market. Of the new crop it is estimated that 25,000 cases have been taken in Lan caster, Yerk and Chester counties, and that about 22,000 cases remain unsold. It is tee early as yet te Btate with cer tainty bow the new crop will pan out. While there is seme wonderfully fine leaf in it the crop, as a whole, is net regarded as first class. The priees paid for Ine better grades are net se high as these paid last year, but some heavy buyers are inclined te believe that they are still paying tee dear for their whistle, while the ethers are sure of it. Inquiries as te the probable acreage of the crop of 1883 have brought answers from various quarters that it will be lets than 1882 ; that some planters will go out of the business altogether, and that ethers will reduce the area. But then, en the ether hand, there are always new adven turers te take the places of these that retire. Seme Kecent Sales. Frem a long list of sales sent te us from different parts of the county we print the following representatives transactions as indicating the general tendency of the market in the various sections whence these reports come : Lititz : The tobacco market has been quite lively in the northern end the past two weeks and two-thirds of the crop has new been disposed of at prices ranging from 12 te 20c. for wrappers, 4 te 8c. for seconds, and 2 te 4c. for fillers. After a hearty breakfast at D J(and we had little te complain of as te board beard ing in Lancaster county ; geed grub and geed beds were the rule), we proceeded te fulfil the premises of Jehn te the grow ers the night befere. Of the wholesome three were visited ; Jehn finding mere flea than was healthy, " we lit out," leaving the rest cursing tobacco buyers for the biggest liars in the world. On down we went looking, finding fault, baying about two acres Jehn mad; net near any hotel, no dinner until three when we arrive at W ,took a square meal, walk out, find some geed tobacco and tell grow ers te come te the hotel in the evening. After supper we are again entertained by ninety and nine proud, but rather sick growers. We are asked often te drink ; Jehn gets excited, buys several crops he has seen, and again premises te meet them all te-morrow, much te my amusement and of which I take an account, and next day he visits one-tenth of them, much te our surprise, which is nearer telling the truth than at any ether time during the week. Going away the next morning we visit a grower, who insisted en an offer se strongly that Jehn finally says he 'will be back in a short time, though he confesses de such intention seen after leaving. " Let's get out of this," he says, " these people don't handle' right." We de se, and en the read we are asked fifty times whether we are tobacco buyers, te which Jehn lies forty-eight times by saying "no" savagely. The two exceptions were, first, a full fledged Dutchman, te whom Jehn said, "yes, what have you get?" "De best grep in dis state," he answered. Jehn says : " Hew does it run, and what de you ask for it?" "Half wrappers and bully goet ones, and I will dake twenty eight cents arunt for it, and if I can't sell ferdat I will geep it ten years."
