Where tne stocks in wmcu tue , scions are te be inserted are large, the 'v. method te be adentea is tnac menuenea in another article in this column ; but where the stocks are small the usual mede of grafting should be pursued. We sug gest, te our agricultural friends who have some of these trees upon their farms and they are te be found upon nearly all of them of any size te employ a geed graf ter te de the work, and report te us the degree of success which may fellow. Uratting Old Trees. In selecting 'bd.npple and pear trees for the purpose of grafting, care should be exercised te take only theso that retain their foliage late in the autumn. This will insure the growing of the graft sufficiently long te firmly establish it and cause it te 'remain unaffected through the winter. In every instance that we have tried te raise fruit from grafts en old trees which shed their leaves early, we have failed. They would grew for a few years, bear a few specimens, and then die. In grafting old trees boughs six inches in diameter can be used. But such boughs only should be selected as have a smooth bark. Saw it at an angle se that all moisture wjl run off; split the bark down an 'inch and a-half ; sharpsn the graft (Sim ene s'e en'.v 5 lt the slant be the fipl length of the slit of the bark ; raise the bark caicfully and set the graft with the cut side next te the weed ; then tie up with a cotton string and wax s- that neither air nor water can penetrate. The waxing should be examined in a few weeks te supply any defects, &c. Let an inch or two of bark remain, uninjured, between the grafts as they are set round the stump. Vhcu the stem is net ever two inches in diameter, four grafts can be set by splitting down the stem tut usual way twice. If all giew, aud are tee many, cut out the two less premising ones. "With care, every apple or pear graft ought te grew, and never less than nine out of tcp. iKarly Pomteeo. Besides commanding a high price, there arc ether considerations that come in te make the early crop of potatoes valuable. The early rose continues te be as geed as the best, net only for the early but the late crop, and always fetch a remunerat ing price in the market. But there is this additional adrantage in the early crop ; it can be harvested aud removed and tbe ground put in geed order for fall crep3. The best turnips we have ever known came out of a piece of ground lirst cleared of early potatoes. Indeed, we de net knew of a mero profitable arrangement of crops than te have turnips fellow pota toes. The ground usually has te be pretty geed for potatoes, but it is net essential that the manuie be very much decayed. Seme, indeed, contend that long strawy manure is all the better for a potato crop. The turnips, en the ether hand, must have the manure very well decayed, in or .der te give its best results. Henee, after the potato has done with its fertilizer, there is enough left for the turnip te thrive upon. Wheat and rye also thrive very well en land which has been p.-evi eusly well manured for potatoes. Iu all these cases the early potato has a great advantage ever tuc late one. They allow of a much earlier preparation of the ground for the subsequent crop. There is still another advautac in au early potato. In this part of the country at least, the plant is subject te the attacks of the stem borer. They usually com mence their ravages about the end of June. They bem out the whele centre pith of the stems, and before the end of July the plants are all dead, being dried up before the potato is matured. Iu such cases - there is net often fifty bushels of potatoes te the acre, and of these half of itieui arc tee small te be saleable By getting the potato early in the ground, and U3ing varieties which mature early, the tubers are of pretty, geed siz9 befere the insects -get rrerk, ah;3 thus there is a great gain . Li seems te us we can almost de without any mere late kinds. We say nothing here of the depredations of the beetle, as it has been se completely met and over thrown as hardly any lenger te be consid ered as a serious injury te the crop, early or late. Trie National Guard. Doylestown Democrat. The state needs a geed militia system, whose efficiency should be strengthened, instead of weakened. The militia are the safeguard of the country and an ergauized body in each state caunet be dispensed with. Ours has a little tee much " fuss aad feathers " about it, and there is a notable disregard of elementary instruc tion. If the Legislature wish te increase the' efficiency of citizen soldiery, it should pass a law compelling the officers te give mere attention te drills in the school of the soldier. Without this, it is as impos sible te make soldiers as it is te teach children te read without their knowing the alphabet. Our militia system is ex -pensile where it should net be.
