The elevator was at the Rese etreet door way. There was a -large quantity of oil en the lower floors, paint en the third floors. The fire broke out seen after 1 o'clock in the basement near the engine room, TJe oil firm's employees had no difficulty in escaping. Uehen jumped en te, the elevator, ran it up te the fourth fleer, and gave the alarm. The smoke followed bim up the elevator, and filled the upper floors. Mr. Stccber and his em pleyees hastened te the reef by means of the scuttle. A wooden stairway ran irem the reef te the reef of 21G William street. Sema of the girls fainted en the stairway, and men from adjacent houses carried them down the scuttle. The girls who were the last te get out were nearly suffocated by the smoke. Eight went down through 21G William street, and eight crawled ever its sloping reef te 22 Rese street. They lest all their outer clothing. Mrs. Steelier left even the money which he was about te pay te his nands. Cehen did net fellow in the flight te the reef. He ran back te the elevator, and the Dtecher boy followed him. 1 hey de scended through the blinding smoke and tried te step at the ground fleer. They could net see and went half way into the basement, where the fire was raging fiercest. In a moment the elevator ropes were burned away, and Cehen was terri bly burned about the face and bands. The boy's hands were burned. Men heard their shouts for help, and kicked in the front deer and dragged them from the elevator platform. James Bunting, en the third fleer, was startled by the smoke peuriug in at the doorway. It was tee dense te allow hira te go up or down stairs, and he ran te the fire escape in the rear. He descended two stories, and jumped. Xt was a o'clock eel ere the flames were subdued. Nene of the walls fell. The building, which belonged te Charles Craske & (Je., was damaged te the extent of $7,000, and waB fully insured. Mr. Stecher said his less was 24,000, partly insured. The choir of the old church refused te sing Sunday, and the music wasiendered by the congregation, whicn consisted principally of the members of Trinity church. A new church is talked of, but the project will net be formally discussed until the action of the vestry en the peti- lijn of the Old Swedes congregation has been announced. Toe Much Study. At the examination one week age she was again promoted te the first class and her parents say she appeared te be m great terror of being again reduced.
