A Tower ob the Level Church' and a fair te Pay fer'lt Tewmrtlp Tldlmga, Drumore's "Jlegular Correspondence. FATRFrELD, Feb.21. The working members of 'Chestnut Level church are wonderfully pleased at the success of the fair ther held last week. They were modest in their expectations and new that the cash en hand' exceeds these expectations their jubilancy is ex travagant iu proportion te the excess of cash. Of course it cannot properly be termed "excess of cash," for we never are troubled with that state of finances, even around Fairfield, and the idea that such a thing is possible at Chestnut Level is funny enough te make onesmile. A church fair is comparatively anew thing in this neighborhood, but we have another kind of fairs (and some of thorn are no longer new) that make ether, less favored neighborhoods jealous of us and envious of our fairs, bless 'em ! But no one could tell in visiting the church fair above mentioned, that it was a new affair te these who had it in charge, and who discharged that charge se efficiently, and overcharged for nothing. The boys spant their money just te see the ladies, who sup plied all wants se expeditiously, smile, and the ladies smiled and smiled just te see the boys spend their money. The at tendance was large during the three after noon? and evenings ; the visitors geed humored, geuereus and easily persuaded ; the occasion altogether being a very pleas ant one te all. The net gaiu, all expenses deducted, was 490. Who Wen the Prizes. The ladies were very assiduous in their efforts te make it a success, and collected contributions from far and near. A handsome wolf robe was voted te Miss Bell P. Sides; Willit's "Miracles of Jesus," elegantly bound, te Miss Laura Clark, as the most faithful Sabbath bchoel teacher ; a fine hymnal te James G. McSparran as the finest vocalist in the congregation, and a beautiful geld penholder and case te Will F. McSparran, as the best penman. Henry Weidley, who weiked hard for the fair, received two cakes ; and Mrs. McClenaghan who su perintended the coffee and sandwich de partment in the most appetizing manner, one dozen goblets and the pothegraphs of the pastor and his wife. All the recipi ents were highly gratified at the expres sions of geed will, and bowed profoundly, of ceurse. Following are the names of a number of business firms who contributed : In Phi ladelphia, Sharpless & Sens, Jehn Wana maker, Thornten Barnes, "R. J. It isn't often that Drumore indulges in gossip, se he may be excused if he does a little talking en this oceasion. About the only things we quarrel about down here are politics and church matters. Net politics and religion, don't misunderstand; we are net troubled with a great deal of religion in this part of the vineyard. That is, we have but little of the great beautiful religion about which we are taught, but we have a great - deal of this unpopular individual religion, every man formulating his own doctrine and damning everybody else's. Church and state are the first things we should consider in getting along nicely in this world, and preparing for the next, certainly ; se it is well that we have the two subjects thoroughly ventilated. Fre quently we find these two important questions se much interwoven with each ether that the spiritual loses its individu ality in its stronger temporal ally ; and we find .after all that uelitics is eui bone of contention I was going te gossip a little about Chestnut Level church. Its congre gation is divided into two parties, distin guished from each ether by one favoring everything done 0 proposed te be done, and the ether stiengly opposing every thing. The first is progressive and liberal, always aiding when help is needed ; the ether is old logy and stinsry, censideiing it iuquisiteus te contribute a penny te any thing " new," which of course is a geed excuse for opposing every thing " new." It would be inconsistent te as sist what they oppose, se J.hey oppose. The faverablcs said they would repair the chuich, enlarge it, te better accommodate the increasing fleck ; they would put a tower at one end, and aspire should point, as our lives should lead, top te heaven; they would beautify the old edifice and make it a fitting guard te? watch ever the congregation ever in the graveyard. The nnnr.sp.rs said no. They Would contribute nothing. They did net approve of such things. New the tower dears com plotien The faverables are proud q'f it, ar.d think it offers te the oppesers a sheit cut pa.t way te heaven. The oppesers) scorn te avail themselves of it, and call it a " monument of felly." The faverables contributed very gener ously, as they were able. But mere funds were needed. A congregational meeting was called, and a fair agreed upon. Hie oppesers were wupuaeu iu fairs, and would net assist;. The favera bles said they would, go it alone, and went. They ireuld bave it in the church, where they might have plenty room. The oppesers ob eb ob jected, herrified at the proposed desecration of "my Father's house," as they called it, and quoted Scripture about some place one time being turned into a market place. The faverables gave way and cramped themselves up in the academy building, and were se unreasonable as te charge 10 cents admission and net discount one half te the few ODDOsers who tame out of cun esity. The oppesers would like te oppose the idea that the fair was a success but " figgura" are inhuman enough net te lie. When the Judgment Day comes and St. Peter at the gate tells us te wait our turns, Drumore will listen te hear, and will be disappointed if he does net hear some one from Chestnut Level say "I object." t Township Briefs. A tragic affair has occurred en an Eng lish railway near Manchester. On the' arrival at Badcliffe of the express pas senger train leaving Ducie Bridge, 3fac chester, for Baeup at twenty minutes te three, the deer of one of the first class compartments was found open. There was no one in the compartment, but it had evidently been recently occupied, as an overcoat and two umbrellas were lying en the seat. There was no clue te the ownership of the articles, nor was there any further indication that anything ex ex traerdinry had happened ; but about three o'clock some platelayers who were at work in the tunnel about two miles from ' icteria Doocie Bried, found, scrambling en the line, a respectably dressed, middle aged man, who was afterwards ascertained te be Mr. J. Kay, a retired tradesman, living at Badcliffe. It was found that his skull was fractured, his face bruised and his clothing soiled, as if he had been dragged along the line. He gave no ex planation of hew he came te be in the tunnel, and he was sent te his home. Seme railway servants who went into the tunnel te leek for the things which Mr. Kay had said he had lest, found the mangled body of a woman lying across the rails along which the train from Man chester te Badcliffe had passed. Her legs had been run ever juBt below the kneep, and almost completely severed from the body. She was still breathing, but in. sensible, and in that condition was re moved te the Manchester Royal infirmary, where she died shortly after admission without having gained consciousness. The woman was afterward identified as Mrs. Kay. It appears that Kay and his wife had been te Manchester te transact some business at Broek's bank and left the city together by the 2:40 train. They were in a compartment by themselves, and al though several passengers were in the next compartment no disturbance was hcaid by them in the tunnel. After reaching home Kay only gave rambling replies te any question put te him. It is said that six or- seven years age he and his wile attempted te commit suicide. The deceased was fifty-one years old and her husband a little elder. The affair remains a complete mystery. m Areinted Tale. Detroit Free Press. Jack Pringle is a man who never wastes an opportunity, pr puts off for te morrow the jeke that can be done te-day. Going down street last Wednesday he was ac costed by a little nervous mau who bad an impediment in his speech. Said the stranger : " C can you t tell me where I can g get s seme t-tin t-tacks ?" "With much pleasure, sir," replied Jack, who realized the position at once, and, having directed his interlocutor te the shop et a neighboring ironmonger, by a somewhat circuitous route hurried off te thr spot by a short cut. New, the iron monger was having his dinner iu a little back parlor ; but when Jack entered the premises he came forward briskly, bowing and rubbing his hands together in that peculiar servile manner that is character istic of the British shopkeeper. " De y you s-sell t tin t tacks?" said Jack, assuming a stammer. "Oh, yes, sir; certainly, sir." " G g oed long ones?" Having "given bis order," Jack thought it prudent te retire at once, as there were several heavy articles within easy access of the proprietor's hands. The old man had hardly cooled down and returned te his meal, which had also cooled down, unpleasant ly, when the "real Simen pure" entered the shop, and again the Lironmeuger came forth, " washing nis hands with invisible soap in lmpercoptiuie water." " De y-you s sell t t-tin t tacks ?" said the little man. Luckily the deer was open, se the cus tomer buccessfully avoided the seven pound weight and the two flatirons hurled at him.
