Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather the fair iu progress at Temperance hall was thronged from early in the even ing till midnight, and the Lancaster city band was in attendance. The business at the tables was very prosperous. A num ber e' the articles te be voted for and chanced off were awarded te the success ful competitors. Jehn Murry and Lewis Getz were com mitted for court te answer the charges of surety of the peace,preferred by Isaac Smith. Murray was also held en a charge of felonious assault and battery en the same man. Before Alderman Barr. Andrew Keels, colored, whipped Emma Archy, at least se she alleges, and he was held te answer at a bearing by Alderman Barr. One drunk was sent te jail for 20 days. Sent Out. Alderman Samson had two drunks en Saturday and they get 10 days each . Davy Crockett " Frank Maye presented Murdock's play of "Davy Crockett" iu Fulton opera house Saturday evening te a geed-sized audience. Mr. Maye has been se long be fore the public in the title role of the play and has made his impersonation of the rough, but honest and manly backwoods man se familiar te theatre gec3, that noth ing in praise of him need be said, since it has been acknowledged f i era his first essay of the part. His support was mainly geed, Miss Charlette Behrens, as Eleaner Vaughn, giving a fine rendition of her part, while the whole play run along smoothly and satisfactorily, as attested by the frequent applause given by the audience. The scenery was pretty, and the scene in'which the wolves make their attack was thrill ing. An Old Taper. Jacob Erisman, tiffstaff in the court " house, has in his possession a copy of the 'SfciNew Yerk Morning Pest, which was print- P ed in 1773. It is a very interesting old document and contains the farewell erders of General Washington te the armies of the United States. Assault and Battery. Wm. Hemer was arrested for assault and battery en his wife, and was held by AKUnnan McConemy for a hearing. ISTMliAwtii the OeMty Line. Plans are being- prepared for a new theatre te be erected in Beading at an cany cay. The two hundrsth anniversary of the! first court house in Bucks county will be celebrated en the 4th of March. Three Lycoming county rafts made the journey down the Susquehanna river yes terday. They were the first of the season. A portion of ene struck en the rocks at Reckvilleand parted. The river is only up te a five feet west branch leg flood. A number of little boys entered an empty freight car at Swatara station the ether evening and made a fire preparatory te cooking eggs. Several of the number then started out te hunt the eggs, bat befete they returned there was nothing left of the freight car except the wheels. On Saturday afternoon, a large Iadle containing about nine tens of molten iron, was upset in the Scott foundry, Reading, through the breaking of the handle whereby it was regulated, and the blazing metal was sent iu sticares in every direc tion through the foundry. The employees made a miraculous escape by running from the danger. The iron was intended for a casting for a large cotton press. On Saturday the water in the hotel at Conshehockcn was drawn off, and lying in the mud and filth at the bottom was found the body of Timethy Teit, who disappeaied from his home in Consho Censho Conshe hockcn last Christmas. The icmains were much decomposed and could scarcely be recognized, The supposition is that Feit, while intoxicated, walked ever the plank into the water. In a pocket of his clothing was en empty whisky bottle. Jehn Chiplcy, a prisoner confined in the Yerk county jail, escaped early Sunday morning by digging thteugh his cell en the second story and jumping twenty feet te the ground, and then scaling the wall around the jail yard, which is twenty-flre feet high. A cell-mate named Innes, in carcerated en the charge of forgery, dis covering the escape, refused te take ad vantage of his chance for liberty and gave the alarm. Chipley has net been retaken, nor is he likely te be, as he had several hours' start of his pursuers. A tramp was arrested and brought be fore 'Squire Kegcrise, of Richland, Leba non county, en the charge of breaking into a school heuse near Richland. He was committed te jail, and was put in the cars te be taken te Lebauen. When the train was tunning at the rate of thirty miles an hour the vagrant raised the window load lead ing te the platform of the car, get through it, out en the platform, and, while attempt ing te leap into the darkness for liberty was caught by the brakeman of the train. A despciate strugg'e ensued between ihe brakeman and the tramp. The latter, however, fell from the platform with great force, and as the brakeman supposed, he would be instantly killed, he pulled the bell-rope, stepped the traiu, aud the cars backed te the spot te pick up the dead body of the tramp. The man bad net been killed in spite of his reckless leap. He had fled for liberty and has net been recaptured. THE 1'UGlLIsTS Fex Trying te Make Arrangeuisnls for the Great Prize Fight. A dispatch from Bultitnore te the Pittsburgh Dispatch gives an inter view with Rihard K. Fex, the backer of Slade against Sullivan in the proposed prize ring championship, in which he says : " I informed Sullivan that I will be in Baltimore until the cud of this week, in Washington until Monday even ing, and in Lancaster aud Pettsvillc, Pa., Thuisday aud Friday next, and expect te hear ft em him before the expiration of that time." As the Mace Slade combina tion will be in this city, it is net altegcth cr unlikely, if Sullivan will pay attention te Fex's wishes, that the latter may recehe word at Lancaster. The impression in sporting circles here is that the light will certainly take place. m A Coleralu SurprUe. In anticipation of the removal of Mr. J. B. Caughcy, of Celcraiu township te Chester county, near Celemauville, his numerous friends gathered at his heuse en Washluaten's birthday te the number of ene hundred aud fifty, te express their lcgiet at his coming departure. An ample collation was spread, and all present sat down te the sumptuous feast. The day was within a few days of their tin wed diug, and it was cslebrated as such, aud the family were the recipients of many presriuts. Speeches were made aud a general geed time was eujeyed, the assembled company leaving with their most heartfelt geed wishes for the future of Mr. Caughcy. A Man who Certainly Is Wanted. Chief of Police Cilley, of Harrisburg, was in this city en Saturday te get Peter Williams. The latter is the mau who was caught by Officer Shubroeks, en North Duke street after a despcrate fight. He was convicted and sentenced te six months imprisonment ; that time has expired here and he is wanted in Harrisburg for burglary. When the officer from that city arrived he found that Williams has two charges of lcceiving steleu goons against him. Alderman Spurrier committed him in default of bail te answer atceuit, he having waived a hearing. The Harrisburg authorities will get a chance at him when these cases aie disposed of. The state department has received an application from the British government for the extradition of J. P. Sheridan, suspected of complicity in the Pheenix park murder. In concrete. . The Heuso te day noncencurred in the Senate amendment te the District of Cel umbia and legislative appropriation bills, and conference committees were appoint ed. The conference committee en the posteffice appropriation bill reported that the conference bad retained in the bill the appropriation for special mail facilities, and had fixed October first as the data when the two cent postage snail go into effect. Considerable oppesitionwas manifested te the conference agreement and a long discussion thereon ensued. Dnring the discussion a message was re ceived from the Senate requesting the re turn of the tariff bill te that body se that certain clerical errors could be corrected. Mr. Robeson objected acceding te the re quest, but the Heuse complied with the re quest and the bill returned te the Senate. After further debate the conference report en posteflice appropriation bill was dis agreed te 114 te 133, and a further confer ence was ordered. In the Senate The Senate, en motion of Mr. Bayard, adopted a resolution requesting the Heuse te return the tariff bill in order that cer tain clerical errors might be corrected.
