After they had passed twenty steps be yond the saloon, the ligislater stepped and said : " Let us go back and get a drink." " I thought you premised your wife net te drink while you were in Austiu ?" The merchant, who is very irascible, suatched the letter out of the clerk's hand, remark ing hastily : " Why, any feel can read that. Just give it te me and I'll lead it." He made several attempts te read his own handwriting, but failed, whereupon he said with great dignity : " I didn't write that letter for me te read it myself. The follewitigconversation between two Austiu inebriatcs was overheard a few days age : " I wish the summer would conic, se the nights would be short ; it would be money in my pocket," remarked the worst looking one of the two. " Hew would you save money by the nights being shorter?" " Well, you nee, time's money," and I lese a heap .of time iu winter by the saloons net opening until half past six. A hack was going up Austin avenue, when two boys, one white and the ether black, jumped en the seat, but somebody en the sidewalk signalled te the driver, who reached annum at them with his whip. The darkey jumped' off, but the white boy kept his scat. The driver, how ever, kept en reaching around with his whip, and every ouce in awhile the lash would hit the legs of the white boy, who wanted te ride, no matter what happened. Finally, he could stand it no longer, and standing up en the seat he called out : "Yeu confounded feel, don't you knew I am here? Don't you knew that nigger jumped off ever se long age? Heretofore the family had get the milk for their ceffee from the milkman, and little Johnny, like many ether people, had no very well deiiued idea hew the milkman get the milk. The cow happened te be a white one, aud after Johnny had watched the milking process for some time, he remarked meditatively : " Pa, you get milk from the white cow, but where is the black cow ?" They scarcely ever speak te each ether. They are net en speaking terms." "Is the feeling between them se bit ter?" " O, net at all. The reason they don't speak te each ether is because the Amer icans can't speak Spanish, and the Mexi cans eau't speak English, be their conver sation is nntnrnlltr limited " lB"0!" A Public Character. Cel. Simeon Belmitddy was e lected te an office, and of course he was very proud of being a public man, but his wife, who is net particularly well educated, is per fectly carried away with enthusiasm at the idea of his being a public official, and takes all the honor of his election te her self. Mrs. Belmuddy was present, shortly after the election, at a social gathering en Austin avenue. The elite of the city were also present. Somebody happened te re mark te her : " 1 ou go out a great deal in ere since the election than you did before, de you net, Mrs. Belmuddy ?" " O, yes," replied Sirs. Belmuddy ; " new that 1 have become a public per son, I am out en the streets a great deal." Tableaux. The Wise Alan of Arkunnaw. Seme time age, bearding a traiu, he per ceived his seu, whom he had net seen for twenty years, occupying a seat, reading. The old gentleman sat down immediately behind the young man. After the traiu had gene about thirty miles, the young mau laid aside his newspaper, aud, dis covering his lather, seized tne old man with affectionate warmth. " Why didn't you let me kuew that you was en the train, father?" " Bocause, replied the old gentleman, " I saw that you were reading, and I did net wish te disturb"- " That would have made no difference." " Aud besides," continued the father, ' I thought that you might waut te bor row a few dollars." " Yeu'v get me there, gttvner, but it's net tee late yet, as I'm clean broke, and don't knew hew te get my next drink. The three important requisites of an ice house are geed drainage, sufficient ventilation and that the ice be well packed in some geed non conductor, of which sawdust or shavings seem te be the best. Fer poultry houses 8 or 10 square feet for each hen is as little as they can be kept in comfortably, aud iu that only by constant cleaning aud frequent ienewals of soil iu the Heer of the houses. Ceal ashes are recommended te be spread under the droppings iu the hen house every morning. The hens scratch in this for the hard, white pieces of ashes, thus keeping the droppings loose and dry. This mixture spread ou the meadows in the spring is an excellent, manure. The using of coal ashes in the hen house is of great benefit, as it takes the place of shells, aud also furnishes a dusting place for the hens. Western farmers annually lese thou sands of dollars by net housing their ma chinery. In half a day's travel one will iu mid-winter see plows, harrows, culti valers, mowers and harvesters, out in the Held, or in the fence corners, or near the buildings, and there they stand exposed te the storms. This practice is net as general as it formerly was, but still it is a heavy tax te farmers whd practice it, and an eye sere te geed farmers that a little time and expense would remedy. A man who was a blacksmith by trade, but who possessed taste and foresight, in dulged in what might be termed " arbor day " fifteen years age, aud with axe aud spade prepared and planted two hundred poles of common white willow, en both sides of the read, about 40 feet apart. Nearly all grew, and they became year by year mere attractive, aud the once bald and open read has become an avenue where people resort for pleasant drives. Lately, when the place was offered for sale, it found a ready and eager purchaser, whose choice was partly inllucnced by the lines of ever-arching trees, which gave the name of Willowdale te this once uninter esting spot. A prominent Chicago dealer in products recently made the following significant remarks about the manufacture of oleo margarine : " I tell you oleomargarine will next season give the butter manufac turers of the West lively competition. Yeu kuew a few years age we were making a hard fight against oleomargarine aud were demanding that laws be enacted te compel manufacturers of that and similar compounds, te brand their products, and sell them en their merits. Well, we accomplished what we desired ; but I believe we have new in it a stronger com petition with creamery butter than we ever bad. -The manufacturers were, by the enforcement of the laws we prayed for, compelled te improve their products, and they have impreved them te such adegree that they can sell them for what they arc, and compete new with all but the very choicest grades of butter. It leeks te me as if we are te be forced, sooner or later, te recognize oleomargarine as a legitimate competitor with the product of the cow."
