THE NATIONAL GAME- UKUIiV-j A. THICK VIKO AM) UEV1KU. Uuw te Take the Conceit Out .if ii Mau- j'uker at) a Menus el Juti-iicc- tual iyinuastic. America has net only a literature and a lauyua:e, but a game oilier own. We ile net speak of ias-cball, but of poker a fascinating pastime, well calculated te en lighten persons who, like Firmilkin in the play, ate anxious te have experience of the passion of renieiss. Poker is net unknown within our coasts, says an English j-. ureal, and is played by the opulent, the 'ieat aud the adventurous Uy way of en lighteninjj the Britisher, and planting the standards of poker in the gardens of our country, one of the victims of the sport has published a volume en the subject (" Poker; Hew te Play It." Griffith & Fanan.) We have .tudied their volumes rather as ethnologists than as gamesters. Baccarat is geed enough f jr us ; there is a simplicity and a social comfort in bacca rat which we miss in the mere elaborate poker. While we are prepared te admit all that may be said in ptaise of poker as intellectual gymnastics, we cannot lerjjet that the same panegyiies have beeu bestowed en the science of metaphysics. New, metaphysics makes no man poorer, unless it induces him te negleel his law ful business, or te publish a volume of essays en lieini: and Net Being. Hut poker impoverishes the gamester, destroys his nerves, and leads him (in America) into the company of bosses and ether politicians, which i-; ruin te body and mind. While poker has thus a sequel of moral ami financial evils, its rules and regulations are, te our thinking, a geed deal mere ib;-euie than the metaphysics even of the Elcatie school ; and we con fess that the " Parmenides" of Plate, or even the iiisfc hook of Euclid, his " Ge ometry," is easy reading comeatcd te the mere ieaincd and -eseteiie part of this velume en poker. We have never seen anything like it, except a small pamphlet en " options" which has been kindly for fer wardad te us by seitiO advertising person en the stock exchange. In "option" whatever they may be there is a practice known as ' put and call" (reminding one of the Hyperborean mystery, " Knurr and Spell"), and there is also something called "tlie straddle." New, the "strad dle," aud " call" (if net " put,") and " jack pets," and " straight flushes," and even " progressive jack spots" are terms with which the technical part of this work en poker fairly bristles. In examining these- pages we feel like the freshman at Ouuibridjie when Euclidc vke colieri nil ct ccasit. The fact is that no cne cau learn a gaire at cards out of a book. He who weuid learn poker must play poker, ju.-.t as "he who wi'l te Cupar maun te Cupar." There is net much at Cupar te giatify the tsavelcr's curiosity, aud we will leai n that poker has but one moral merit. It takes the conceit out of a man, and may, s far, bu recommended, te the young aud te the amaleuraitcrities. But the history aud general itharnctci" of the :-pert:uu lt-.-is generally interesting. Let us begin v. ith llse general ehar.iets.r el the juiic, which may he darkly u..der u..der iiteiM by anyone who will ub.i .d . his mind te the subject. Apparently wi ai net sure of this puinl any number ji perseus m.iy play poker. The dealer, giv i':;; one card at :. time, allots te each m.ui live cards. The player en the dealer's left hand places any sum of money he pleases in the peel, and this is called ante. Every player v he thinks his hand geed cueugh, or v.he cheeses te pieteud it is geed enough (hhuV), or who hopes te im prove it by tailing mete cards (like the miss in loe), must double the stake called ante. Ov he may raise it te a still hi. her denomination, and every player who fol fel lows him must put a stake equal te tint higher sum into the peel. Then players who ehoeso te de se discard a peit' u of their hands and tcccivc a cei responding number of cards from the dealer, aud the game begins. Everyone who backs his luck must "hee" the last tane that is, if he cheeses, put :n an equal sum ; or, may "go better" that is i, ineiease the ca!!.," all .'.hew stake. When a nl.iyer their hands, aud the highest; hanl wins the peel. Te "bruit"' is te bet nigh enough en a peer or woith'ess hand te make all the ether players lay their hands down without "seeing" or "calling" you, that is, -without staking money enough te have the right te examine your hand. All ll.is is simple i.r.e.igh ; the d'Hiculty begin when e: e tties te imdeistand thr slang lei ins for the hands that are v-jluabl'.. A quaiter of an hour's practice would here be mere instinctive than a week of book learning. ' The origin of tlie game of poker," ae cording te its Victim, "seems te be lest i 1 the mists of antiquity." It may be as old as patulle, p.uhis-i and bickganimeu, which are played through Arabia and Etrei te Aztec, Mexico. But our in structor holds that poker is, without doubt, "I he final development of the game of gleek," which was "played in England mero than Unco hundred years age." The " binding " in poker also icscnjbks the game of brag, which Arabi played last summer in Egypt. Aiabi bluffed en a very peer "pat h.ir.d," and, et all the qualities mentioned as uselul te a poker player, he only possessed " check. '' The French declined te " sce " him, and yet they ate se unspertsmanlike as te claim a siiaie of the "progressive jack pet." Te return te the history of poker. Gleek was net only played iu Euglaud long age, but was apparently borrowed from France. la his "Ballade de benne Dectri no accux dc mauvaise vie " Villen says : (Jiiiyiie. n a herian, an gllc, auxii'.iillei, en .'en va tout, or csceutex. Teut mix luvernes ct aux lines : It docs net seem very audacious te iden tify Greek with trlie. and this cives llse ances-ter of poker an aucicut pedigree. Our author (net Vilien, but the Victim) quotes a note from Gilferd's edition of "Every Han in His Humer." In tlr.t comedy occurs the phrase : " Here's a trick vied aud levied," aud the comment says that these terms ecaur in a dezm old games. " Te vie was te hazard, te put down a certain sum upon a hand of caids. Torevie was te cover it with a larger sum, en which the challenged became the ehai leuger, and was te be revied in his turn with a perpetual increase of stakes. This vying and revying upon each ether continued until ene of the parties lest courage and gave up the whole, or obtained for a stipulated sum a discovery of his antago nist's cards, when the best hand swept the table." The Victim adds that vie and revie are the same as "see you " aud "see you again," as used in poker. The custom of " seeing," however, according te Gif ford's note, was net at all peculiar te gleek. When we come te examine gleek it does net appear te bear much rescm rescm blauce te the American pastime. A brief account, of gleek we llud in "Authentick Memoirs Relating te the Lives au-1 Adven tures of the most Eminent Gamesters and Sharpers from the Restoration of King Charles. Published from the original Papers of a Gentleman, designed for the Use of his Sen, as a preservative against the pernicious Pr.iptice of Gtming. Wherein are demonstrated the tricks made Use of in all the Games played in Europe. Louden : 1773." The gentleman who is e caieful of the morals of his son nar rates the biography of 3Ijer Pepper, who ' became a great gamester, especially at gleek, which is a game en the card:, wherein the ace is called Tib, the knave Tem, the four of trumps Tiddy. Tib, the ace, is 15 in baud and IS in play, because it wins a trick ; Tem, the knave, is 9 and Tiildv is 4 : the Towser. tUe sixth Tum bler, which, if inhand, Towser is 5 and Tumbler G." Meurnival is another term in this curious old game. Majer Peprer wen thousands at gleek, but at last shot himself in his lodgings in Dutchy laue. All that was mortal of Majer Pepper was interred in the church yard of St. Mary-Ie-Savy, in the Strand. If poker is a development of gleek, it is diablement change in route. But we can readily be lieve that " te undeistaud ' gleek alone would employ all the time, aud mero than all the wits, of the modem profession." The Victim leaves that portion of his task which may be called " bitterly historical" and betakes himself te gr.ssip about the " dear, dam'd delightful game." Poker is increasing iu men's favor in America, but we de net learn that in America young ladies take a hand. States men and politicians "waller," as Tem Sawyer says, in poker. "A well known gentleman" onee wen $1,800 and thrce geld watches. Iu ItsGl Captain Cook, a paymaster iu the Federal army, lest $80, 000 at poker. One of the most remark able men in the country ouee played for 'M hours and wen $09,000. He then took a rest and afterwards gave his fricuds a revenge and lest $38,000 in an hour. Re treat new seemed wise aud he played eharieinagne with the lemnaut of his booty. A certain major is famous for having " scooped iu $12,000 " iu ene " let." Here is a passage of interest te the sweet English enthusiasts who have been pained by the pictures of political life drawn in " Democracy :" "Politicians sometimes play heavy games of poker, es p;eially in Washington when Congress is in session, aud in Albany during the meet ings of the Legislature." An old poli tician, who spends nearly every winter in Albany, said : " In Albany members have beeu rewarded for votes en bills by being allowed te win at poker." Oh, republican virtue, hast thou sank tethisabyss of cor ruption ? However, the charming practice was mere common when Tweed controlled the Legislature than it is new. Iu 18S1 a game was played for stakes amounting te $150,000. This certainly, te use a Western idiom, "partook of high ligutes." There seems no particular interes', in another historical " draw " which lasted for 3(5 hours, while at the eud $G,000 bad been wen and lest. "A celebrated assthete " is reported te have repeated the coup of the Heathen Chinee, though of course without the aid of a private supply of cards. Per haps the most amusing pages in the book of poker are theso which tell hew the oriental sage saw no harm in the game while he was a winner. His conscience was like a sea rest. "It seemed a most desirable aud in all respects a gentlemanly g.ime." But when the sage lest, the lieud Kcmor-e claimed him for her own. Then no knew, tee late, that poker was sinful. This icvulsiouef seutiment may efien 5j studied beneath the sunny skies of Me-ile Carle. It is believed that all men 'hnik themrclves heaven-born poker isis till the conceit is taken out of them by failure. After about a dozen failures the mind recovers its healthy moral tone, and conceit ceases te dwell in the breast of m-iij. Unfortunately, conceit can only be eradicated from some minds with what is technically styled "the bottom dol lar." Any bO'Iy em catch a cehl new.
