Smith, of Port Jervis, N. Y.f w.-.r, uicd for forgery in New York city aud ccntenced in Jane, 1880, to state priB ..n lor five years. In April last an effort was made to procure a pardon from Gov eruor Cornell. A paper drawn by the prisoner was presented by Hon. A. C. Uutts, or Montioollo, together with letters from many prominent persons expressing the belief that Smith was the victim of a conspirai-y. Official investigation, how ever, t-hows that be bad been convicted of the muuler of Miss Stcinecke at Carlisle, Pa., in 1877, and sentenced to be banned, but on a new trial was ac quitted. At that time he was known as Paul Scboeppc. He afterwards went to Chicago and became a bookkeeper. Soon after he committed frauds and lied to Bal timore. In that city he was arrested and committed to jail for obtaining money on false pretences. On tho Chicago authori ties bcinjr notifiod a requisition was pro cured and Smith was taken to that city, where ho was convicted aud served out a term of three years at Joliot prison. Lamb, a wealthy and highly respected citizen of Hannibal, Mo., while very drunk late on Friday night went to the house of a man named Hull, living nt Dreary Hollow, a mile or two from St. Louis, to see a woman, with whom, it is said, ho was formerly intimate, but wli.t had recently married Hull. Lamb be came abusive and was ordered out of tho house. Ho refused to go, aud in a scuttle to put him out ho knocked tho woman down. Hull then struck him with a poker knocking liim out oi' tho door, which was closed on him. The drunken man men reeled around on the side of tho house and discharged a pistol throueh tho window, tho hall taking effect in Mrs. Hull's left side, killing her almost, iustautiy. Lamb lied on a Wabash train, but was captured. Ho is a graudsou of Claiborne P. Jackson, tho noted rebel governor of Missouri, and is very highly connected. A Contractor's Attempt at .Suicide. At Bradford I. S. A. Evans, a railroad contractor, tried to kill himsolf on Satur day night while suffering from mania a potu. He shot himself in the Lead, but will recover. Six Men Iteported Drowned. A special from Mount Kinco, Mo., says fears arc entertained that six men, includ Dr. N. S. Davis, P. C. Knight and Chas.
