LANCASTER, TA, A QUEER CASE, HOW A FOOLlSU KSCA1MDE KSDEI1. A Young Mm Writes Aaooyniiun Letters to HH Own Sliter aud Itocume engaged to Iter. Tho Chicago Inter-Ocean iu a recent issue says : This week au adventure with a serious moral came to the kimwN edgo of the Inlcr-Ocean. About three mouths ago a young man of excel lout family, residing on the Vost Siil.i anil employed as an accouutaut in an insur ance offico on LaSalle street, concluded ho would have some fun with tho girls aud inserted the following advertisement iu ouo of tho daily papers of this city : Wanted A young man with a good income wants to correspond with a young lady between tho ages of eighteen and twenty-two ; object, social pleasure, and matrimony if mutually agreeable after acquaintance; photographs exchanged. Address M 90, office. He received several replies, and ex changed letters with tliree or four of the writers for a time, but flually dropped all but one, whose letters where tbe most iu telligent and attractive. With her the correspondence was kept up for about two months, and photographs were exchanged. The youug man, not wishing to disoloso his own identity without first having mado sure of his victim, sent her a pho tograph of another person, which ho pro cured at a photograph gallery iu another part of the city, and it so happened that in sending her picturo she deceived him in the same way. Tho correspondence ripen ed into an engagement for marriage with out either persons having seen the other, and tho young man became anxious to see tbe features of his unknown friend. What his motives were cannot bo judge except by the course ho adopted, but it may bo said that at least they were neither pure nor honorable, as he has a very wide circle of lady acquaintances, and if he was desirous of marriage ho could have found among thorn plenty of girls who would have readily reciprocated his affections, as ho is attractive in appearance, well educated and intelligent, and his parents aro very well to do in tho world. They live in a handsome house and bavo all tho luxuries that a liberal incomo can afford. As far as social pleasure was concerned, ho found plenty of it in his own circle, and there fore tho only theory for his seeking tho acquaintance of somo unknown girl by concealing his identity is that his object was other than tiiat advertised. After a great deal of urging on his part and au equal amount of hesitation upon hers, ho liually secured tho consent of his correspondent to meet faco to face, aud he fixed for the sccuo of his meeting a news depot on West Madison stacct, which is frequented by ladies ; arranged with his friend to visit him there at au early hour in tho evening, and promised to escort her to the theatre ; suggesting that after tho play was ovor they miiht havo a sup cr aud a good time. Ho appeared at the place of meeting promptly, and after wait ing there a few minutes was very much astonished to hco his own sistor, a .irl of nineteen years, walk in, bearing the mark of identity which it was arranged that his correspondent should carry. Tito surprise and chagrin was mutual, aud it is to bo hoped that young men with evil intentions uml reckless young girls will hereafter carefully avoid such adventures. It ap pears that tho girl, having seen this adver tiseinout, for " tho fun of tho thing " an swered, aud was soon so much interested iu tho letters of her correspondent that sho was willing to keep it up even at the sac rifice of her self-respect. It was a narrow escape for both of them. A SCHK1IK FOR LOVE'S SAUK. Why Chicago Youth Keaolvod to Kiitnr Upon a UourHo of HecKtuxs IftKslpalinii. CliicugoTriliiiiic. "I want to sco au editor,' said a blim young man who wore very light pants, a but about the sizo and shape of a peanut shell and a collar that seemed to bo always teaching for his chin without qui to get ting there, as ho opened tho door yester day afternoon. " I camo up to sco," said tho young man, " whether ouo of tho edi tors would have any objections to giving mo somo advico on a matter in which I am deeply interested. I may say that " "You'ro iu lovo, aren't you ?" asked tho horse reporter. "I know you are, anyhow," ho continued, without giving the visitor a chance to answer. "Thcro is a sort of nervous, hesitating, cat-found-iu-the-wrong-backyard air about your actions that gives you away at once. What's tho trouble? Uirl gone back on you?" " I think not," pep! i ad tho young man. "I cannot bolievo that any one has usurp' ed my place in her affections. " " Dono what ?" "I say I do nob bolievo hor lovo has faltered?" "You mustn't havo such a Boston way of talking," said tho horso reporter, "or we shan't bo able to get along well. That girl hasn't weakened, you say ?" ' No." "How's tho old man? Havo you cor ralcdhira?" "Do you mean tho young lady's father?" asked the visitor, a look of mild astonishment passing over his counten ance. " Certainly I do," responded the repor ter. "How do you loom up in the pa rental horizon ?" " Tho father of tho young lady does not object to me," was tho reply. ' Well thou, what's wrong ? You havo tho girl on your sido and her father is agreeable. It lookB to mo liko a walk-over for the money. " I hardly think you understand tho matter," said the youug man. "My trouble is that tbe young lady doss not teem fitted to become tho wifo of a man who wants a helpmeet. Sho doesn't seem to havo any principle ideas regarding life." " Sort of a eirlv-eirl. isn't she ?" said the horse reporter ; ' ' always talking about tho ideality of tho ideal, and ail such muse as that, aud wants to know if the silvered pencilings of moonlight among tho verdure-clad trees aro not wierdly beautiful. I've seen that kind. They're daisies to keep away from." "I think you havo tho right idea," re plied the visitor, "although your stylo of expressing it is somewhat crude." "It's a pretty tough caso," said the ai mirer of Maud S. These girls who aio so eternally tcsthetical are geneially first class feeders through I'vo noticed that. The silvery moonbeams never seemed to take away their appetite. I guess yon'd better try tbe reckless dissipation racket that ought to fetch her." "Try the what?" " Tho reckless dissipation racket. Tho next time yu call on Myrtle, or whatever her namo is, you want to plant yourself on tho sofa with a sort of weary, man-bccn-reading-a-Milwankcc-papcr look, and put your baud uu to your forchea 1. Then when sho asks what's the matter you say that her manner of lato has been so cold that it must be that sho does not lovo you, and that tho thought of losing her was so moddening that you have been indulging iu reckless dissipation, If she doesn't sling herself around some thon, and say that sho will never, never leave you, and how could you ever doubt her love, and all that, I'm no judge " aud the horse re porter assumed a Benjamin Franklin look. " I will act ou your suggestion," said tho visitor, taking up his kiss-me-quick-before!-go-bat aud looking out in a friend ly way over the high water collar. " How much dissipation do you think 1 ought to indulun in to produce the proper ef fect ?' " Well." replied the horso roporter, " I should imagine that if you were to play about two games of billiards and drink a strong lemonade it would constitute for you tho wildest kind of a debauch." m m may Kauw a Smile. A man asked a school teacher of this city not very long ago what became of all the "old moons?" He said ho had seen frequent references to now moons but the old ones were not accounted for.
