LANCASTER DAILY INTELUGENOEK, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1882. ANEDITORSFATAL SHOT. A tsCLMcr INSTEAD OF A KETKALTIOH x-CoBrimu Slayback Killed In tb Ed itorial Koobi of m St. Lou's News paper. The business part of St. Lonis was thrown into a state of high excitement about half-past five o'clock Friday even ing by the report that John A. Cockiell, managing editor of the Post-Dispatch, had shot and ki'led Colonel A. W. Slayback, a prominent lawyer and well-known politi cian. No one directly concerned in the matter will make a statement, but Henry W. Moore, the city editor of the paper, who was sitting at his desk writing, says that while Colonel Cockrell, John M. Mc Guffin, business manager, and Victor T. Cole, foreman, were holding a business conference in the editorial room, Colo nel Slayback, accompanied by W. H. Clopton, entered the local room and passed on toward the editorial room, the door to which was closed. Mr. Moore turned iu his chair as they passed by and observed that Colonel Slayback, as he opeued the door with his left hand had his right hand in his pistol pocket, and in less than half a minute after Slayback en tered Cockrell's room Mooro heard the report of a pistol. He immediately Bpraug up and on entering the editorial room found Slayback stretched on the floor and Cockrell bending over him, apparently wiping the blood from his face. Cockrell asked Moore to send for a physician, which he did, and a few moments later Dr. McCasthy arrived, but not until Slay back was dead, he having died about three minutes after being shot. Meanwhile Cockrell washed his hands au'l in k"n (ban livu miniiN's ;i!ter the fatal shot was lired he aud Mr. McUuffiu . MitTi'il a carriage aud drove away. It :t- --i that they went to Four Courts and auricudeied to the chief of police, but such was not the case, and it is not jet known where Cockrell is. Col. Slay back's brother, Charles . Slayback, president of the Merchants' Exchange, was immedi ately notified of the sad event and ho gave directions for the disposal of tho body, which was sent to the deceased's late homo. The ball from Cockrell's pistol entered Slayback's left side near the heart and ranged upward. Whether it entered the heart is not known, but it must have penetrated tho lungs. An im mense crowd gathered around tho Post D'upiitch office and remained there till long after dark. An extra of an evening paper says that Colonel Slayback had gone to the office for satisfaction or fight. When he entered tho editorial rooms he and Corkrell met faco to face. The colonel began to denounce Corkrell for assaults made upon him by the Poil-Dispatclt and in his fury tho col nnel drew a revolver from his pocket. Cockrell, who had the advantage by rea son of li'.s self possession, also drew his revolver and fired at Slayback, who fell, mortally wounded, and died a few moments afterward. His corpse is still within the room, surrounded by a crowd of excited friends. The troublo which terminated so tragically originated in the fact that at a political meeting on Thursday evening Colonel Slayback inado a bitter onslaught on the Post-Dispatch and its reporters, to which the paper re sponded last evening by uncomplimentary references to Colonel Slayback, which rendored him so indignant that ho visited tho office to demand satisfaction. The following is tho article which appeared in the PoiUDUpaMi : Mr. Alonzo W. Slayback, an individual whoso chief claim to distinction rests upon the fact that he is the law partner of Col. James O. Brodhead, rose in a meeting of Democratic ward politicians in this city last night and without personal provoca tion proceeded to apply a string of vile aud virulent epithets to the Post-Dispalc7i and its conductors, making charges which he kuew to be false. This is the same A. W. Slayback of and concerning whom the following card was written and published in the city by John M. Glover on the 11th day of November, 1881. Mr. Glover re cently ran as a Democratic candidate for Congress in the Ninth district aud received a hearty endorsement from the Democratic voters of character. Mr. Glover is alive yot. The letter referred to above was an open one by John 31. Glover, accusing Col. Slayback of cowardice. PrrrsroaD, Mai..
