-? j i S i C fi tr , LANCASTER frAlLY IN O ;rDESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1882. ,r --- ,-. J ' . S LtTi " i' TOBACCO NEWS. CONDITION OF CROPS AND TRADE. Tbe Market In Lancaster ami Abroad Recent Transactions to Seed Leaf and aaafTtard Tobacco. There is very little of tbe crop yet standing in tbe field ; occasionally one may be seen, buttbeaeand a great portion of tbe very late will bardly pay tbe cut ting. We have beard a great deal of com plaint on tbe part of farmers of their to bacco not curing on tbe poles, and to ver ify it have gone to some trouble, to go around anions: aoae of them'; and are sorry to say that tbe complaint is well grounded. We saw some of them badly damaged, one of them, in a good shed, was really rotten ; another in a barn was falling off the stalks, and in other cases we found plenty of shed-burns and stem rot. This is confined to tobacco that was cut during the wet weather and soon after it. One of the best growers says there was too much wet in it when put away. Some of the medium and later crops since they are begining to case show a considerable damage from fleas. There will bo some very tine goods in this crop, as good as ever found in this county, and whilst we do not want to be considered an alarmist we mako this prediction : That there will not be half as many fine cases in it as in lust years. Tbe crop may be big as far as acres go, but the lateness of the planting made low topping necessary in tbe first place and the storms were serious more so than is generally sup posed and the damage now being done by hanging is among the best goods gen erally such that the outlook for real fine goods is not encouraging. A farmer told us a few days since that in his uuigbborhoLd he thought while the tobacco was growing that he had never mth better prospects, but now he is satis fied iliwi it will not pan out more thau a half ci op and that tbe yield in his best patch will not be 1,000 pounds tc tbe acre. Much tobacco this year was topped at six and eight leaves. Sampling of the '81 is almost over, and packers say it speaks for itself. What we have seen really does .look elegantly and will no doubt give satisfaction to manu facturers. It shows less white vein and (lamago tbau has been in any crop for years. There is somo business being dono in old goods, and for low grades tbero is a good demand. Fillers are especially wanted, and wo havo heard of some big offers for them ; but on the whole our local trade during the past week has been dull. Tbe Hew York Market. 1.. S. 1 obacco Journal. It has been a heavy week in point of sales, riving buovanoy to tbe market and inspiring holders of crops which have- been thus' far neglected with new and brighter hope. It cannot be denied that the rapid clearing off of the '81 Wisconsin, New York state and, to some extent, Connecticut, justifies the hopes of a better market for '81 Pennsylvania at no distant date. The stocks of tbo three crops just named that so far have left tbo hands of packers, are classed as the best portions of the same. I he infenor grades will bo much harder to dispose of. It stands to reason that tbo best grades of '81 Penn sylvania will come next for the considera tion of buyors. Up to the present time the prices asked for this tobacco have frightened prospective buyers, and conse quently they have turned toward those crops tbe large sales of which have been noted during tbe month past. As we said before, the exhaustion of tbo fine grades of these crops must bring tbe attention of buyers onco more to '81 Pennsylvania. The late large purchase of 'Si Wisconsin, New York state and Connecticut must bo looked upon also as a defensive movement on tbe part of buyers, especially the cigar manufacturers. They have, so to speak, lortified themselves with a stock of leaf sufficient to last them several months. They will not come before tbo holders of '81 Pennsylvania as forced purchasers. They will, and, in fact, already do, as sume au air of nonchalance and rejoico in the anticipation of freezing out holders. To some extent tbo game will work. Weak holders will close out at the first reasonable chance ; strong holders, per haps, can only be forced to submit after abcut a year's stubborn fight by tbo chance of buying the '82 crop at small figures from growers. From the tone of the Pennsylvania country press, we find that farmers do not incline that way as yet. In old tobaccos, also, a heavy business was done. The concession that are being made to buyers are very heavy. The sales of tbe week were as follows : Crop '81. SNew York 1,100 cases,(Dig Flats,) 8 to 15 cents. Wisconsin 1,339 cases Havana seed, 1G to 20 cents. Connecticut 700 cases, mostly Housa tonic, 14, 18, 23, 30 cents. Ohio 300 cases, G to DA cants. Pennsylvania 250 cases, p. t. rep '80. Pennsylvania 350 cases ; 12 to 1G cents for running ; medium wrappers, 25 cents. Ohio '.500 cases, 6 to 7 cents. New York 500 cases (Big Flats), p. t. Havana Market very active. S.ilos comprise both '81 and '82 stock. For the latter there exists considerable inquiry its apparent fine quality proving attrac tive to speculators. Prices firm. Sales, 1,000. Sumatra Market remains active. Siles 400 bales, at pricas ranging from 90 cents to $150. Philadelphia Market. The usual trade in manufactured tobacco continues fully up to the mark tho past week. Standard brands are freely used at full figures, while new brands of excellent material and splendid workmauship arc offered at off figures. Fine-cut is fairly active at full prices ; reliable goods have first call. Cigars A business full of lifo ; ordois for employer and employee. The stock turning out fills the bill ; tho trouble is to get goods ready promptly. Straff is up to the mark in sales ; price and profit satisfactory. Seed Leaf A fair customary trade was done the past week. Prices remained steady, especially for 1881 Pennsylvania new leaf. Fine wrappers of Wisconsin and York state seed, 1881, appear to show color, quantity and quality, and are evi dently the best crop for many years ; so much so that Sumatra must take a back seat. Prices hold very steady, and favor the holder. Receipts for tho week 729 cases Con necticut, 498 case Pennsylvania, 121 cases Ohio. 04 cases Wisconsin, 84 cases York state seed, 149 bales Havana, 41Ghhds. Virginia and Western leaf tobacco. Sales have been 399 cases Connecticut, 410 cases Pennsylvania, 71 cases Ohio, 48 cases Wisconsin, 32 eases York state seed, 101 bales Havana, and 119 hhds. Virginia and Western transit direct from manu facturers. uarlBg Martfar aad Bank Robbery A special from Waupaca, Wis., says : A daring murder and bank robbery occur red here hut night, the victim being H. C. Mead, a wealthy banker, who has been in business here for thirty years. He was an eccentric bachelor of 00, who slept in the bank and boarded at the hotel. To-day he failed to appear at breakfast or dinner. A messenger was sent to the bank and found it locked. Going to a back window he found the wire screen cut tbe window let down from the top and Mead lying in a nool of blood on the floor. Investigation showed tbe head and face to bo horribly I mangled with shot, as if both barrels of a doable barrelled shot-gun had been dis charged at him at short range. It is sup posed the assassins shot him from the window while he was sitting at a table writing. The safe was unlocked and tbe assassins bad carried off several thousand dollars in currency, gold and silver. The exact amount is not known. There is no clue to tbe murderers. Pittsford, Mass..
