LANCASTER DAILY INqIGENCEK, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 18SZ. -Lancaster intelligencer. FRIDAY E.VBNIKO, SEPT. 15, 1882. SCIENCE AMU AST. Karly History of Gas LIshtlng. The city of Chaumont has taken the in itiative in the erection of a statue in honor of Phillippe Lebon, a nativo of Brachay (Uauto-Marne), France, who, so the French claim, was tho inventor of gas lighting. Many managers and directors of gas works, and a number of scientific men throughout France, hare promised the town of Chaumont their support. A provisory committee has been formed, with tbo mayor of Chaumont as an hon orary president, and'H. Foncart, presi dent of the Technical Society of Gas In dustry in Prance, as the active presi dent. In order, to plaoo before our readers the correct idea of Lebon's relations with this wonderful invention, we give the following brief sketch of the early history of gas making : As early as 172C Stephen Uales, in bis "Vegetable Statistics," states that he obtained 186 cubic inches of an inflamma ble gas from tho distillation of 128 grains or Newcastle coal.. Bishop Watson, in his " Chemical Essays," describes experi ments mado on coal gas, and says that it does not lose its illuminating power when psssed through water. Lord Dundonald, of Scotland, took out a patent in 1787 for making coal tar, and erected ovens for tin purpose. Ho obtained, besides the coal tar, a quantity of coal gas, which was burnt in CaloroiB Abbey, and cous'ul cral a great curiosity. About tho year 1792, William Murdoch, a Scotchman, living in Itedrutb, Cornwall, began making experiments, and found that when coal was heated in au iron re tort an inflammable was given oft, and with this gas he lighted his residence. Murdoch, possessing tho characteristic slowness of his poople, mado no further use of the gas than burning it for the amusement of his friends, and it was nearly ten years before his invention was published abroad. .Iu the meantime Phillipo Lebon, mentioned at the begin ning of this article, who was then engi neer of bridges and roads, began making experiments by heating wood, peat, etc., in retorts, and found that thoho bodies, by tho action of heat, yielded an inflam mable gas, which could be used not only for illumination, but also for the produc tion of heat and power. Ilisapparatushe called a thcrinolamp. According to French authors he lighted his residence in Paris in 1796. In 1798, he read a paper before the French acad emy describing his thermolamp, and this paper was translated into English and German by Wiusor. In 1799 ho obtained a patent in Franco for producing a gas from peat., and applying it to purposes of illumination and heating. Two years' later tho brother of James Watt, being in Paris, wrote to England, 1 saying " that if anything were to bo douo ' with Mr. 31urdoch's gas, it must bo done at onco, as there was a Frenchman iu Paris who had simjjax ideas and proposed to illuminate that citv bv these means." Even after receiving this broad hi-'t, JI.. Murdoch took no w" -toward securing his invention b a patent, little realizing tlrat this simple invention, in less than a century, would be developed into ono of the greatest industries in tho world. Lebon had received a theoretical educa tion, and although his theories were good, there were practical difficulties in tho way which ho was uuable to overcome, while, on the other baud, Murdoch was more of a piactical man, and, therefore, was not L indexed so much with practical difficul ties, aud fur this reason ho is considered the inventor of practical gas-lighting, for, previous to his experiments, illuminat ing gas only a curiosity, aud by rondoriug its manufacturing practical bo made it an everyday necessity. In 1792 Murdoch lighted his workshop iu Redruth with gas. The first moro ex tensive gas work was established by him iu 1802, at the Soho fouudry, near Birm ingham, and iu 1804 a spinning mill in Manchester was lighted with gas. It was first introduced in this country In Baltimore in 1821. in Boston in 1822 and New York in 1827. Tho reason way wood-gas made by Lebon waJ infeiior to coal-gas, was aftor- -s cxplaiucd by Dumas, who proved Wa. One of tho large gas com panics in New York is at present engaged in tho manu facture of gas from wood. All the other gas companies in that city, except two, are manufacturing gas from coal very similar to tho manner pursued by Murdoch. Tho principal improvements which have been made have been in respect to its purifica tion. 1 had severe attacks ol gravel ami kitlni-y trouble; was unable to g:l imy mcliiiii or doctor to cure mo until I used Hop Hitter, :uul they enrol inc in a short time, A J)islin g it i shed Lawyer in Wayne Cotmli.
