Ntw York World. ,, ,, Miss IJeleu Lenoir, wlio has been .nub aging Mr. D'Ojley Carte's recent tours in Englaad, returned to Now York yesterday on the White Star steamer Republic to msko arrangements Sot the production in tuts city ana elsewhere of several new operas by one or more of Mr. D'Oyley Carte's companies. Miss Lenoir said to a repjiter, when asked whether Gilbert and Sullivan's new open was included in the repreiory ; "Yes, it will be produced here about tbe 16th of November. By the way, it is not called The Princess as currently reported. It has not .yet been christened. Mr. Gilbert has completed the libretto, but the musio is not yet finished. Mr. Bullivan has hid himself in some out-of-the-way place in Switzerland that be may escape the distractions of London and de void all his eaergies to the completion of his task. 44 Can yon give a description of the opera J" i 44 1 don't miad giving you a glimpse of it, but, as the work is not yet completed, Air. Sullivan would not like me to tell too much about it Of course it has not yet beeu rehearsed, bat I have had the libret to lead to aw aad have heard some of the munis. & is all Mr. Gilbert's comic opt ras there is not much plot. The hero oi the piece is named Strephon. His mother is a fairy andasFuch is exempted from the ravages or titoe and tne iutiruii ties of age. Sue al way looks young aud charming. Stephen's lather was not bo favored, being a fairy only from the -waist down. Sterphon, of course, has a sweet heart. She becomes jealous of his mother and will not believe that the facinat ing lady, who appears to be about seventeen, is her prospective mother in law. The other principal char acters are a Lord Chancellor of England aud a Queen of the Fairies. Tbe latter part will have to be played by a lady who possesses an abundance of adipose tisue. Tbe part is something like that of Lady Jane in Patience, and that of the Fairy Mother, which is assigned to tbe prima donna of tbe company, corresponds somewhat to that of Patience. The con tlemenofthe chorus are 'Peers of Eng land,' aud appear in their coronets and robes. Tho opera contains indhy catching airs and tunes. The Lord .Chancellor sings a song which is destined to become veiy popular. Strephon sings a very tak ing song to his fairy mother. It is some thing of a parody on Tennysou's 'Queen of the May.' The refrain runs : 'I'm to bo married to-day, mother ; I'm to bo married to-day.' The part of Strepbou will be played by Mr. Carleton. Mi-. Ryley will.6usta:u the character of the Lord Chancellor. " The opera," continued Miss Lenoir, " is iu two acts and is about the same length as tmtenu. it is under stood that Mr. Gilbert will bo here to re hearse it in October. If not, somebody instructed by him will take charge of the rehearsals. Mr. D'Oyly Carte will prob ably arrived here in November to superm tend its production on the stage." m m i rKS.UD1JL.KNT INSURANCE. xhe Secretary 01 a Deatb-ttattle " Com pany Uouvlcted of rale Pretence. ' The first ciiiniual case in " graveyard " insurance annals came to a termination at Harrisburg in tho conviction (for obtain ing money uudcr false proteuces) of L. B. Hummel, secretary of tho notorious Ma honing insurance company of Soliusgrove, Snyder couuty, which is now in tbe hands of a icccivcr. It seems that the company issued a circular iu June. 1881, giving the number of members J 11 class 5, known as the "Old People's" class. The list was a pretty large oqe, aud L. Fitting, I. M. Morley aud W. H. Palmer, tho prosecutors, wero taken with the idea of insuring their subject in the Mahoning. They visited Soliusgrove and were informed by Hummel that the cir cular, as issued, wa3 correct, and the in vestment a good one. They placed "their man " in tbe Mahoning, aud iu due time, as was probably expected, he died. On November 1, 1881, when they weut for their money, they wero informed that there was nothing coming to them, but that, on the coutrary, they owed the com pany $34. They examined the books and found that ou Juue 1, when the delusive circular was issued, there were but half as many members in tho " class" as represented. The defenso claimed that the books in November only showed the number who had paid assess ments, and that the discrepancy in num bers complained of. by the prosecutors represented the number of members who had refused to pay assessments on Juno 1, 1881. The jury believed the prosecutors and found Hummel guilty. Judge Hickes, of York, tried the case. Judge McPher son, who represented tho insurance com missioner in the proceedings against tho company to revoke its charter, declining to try it. A motion in arrest of judgment was made, and Hummel was placed under $500 bail until next month, when tho mo tion will be heard. Tbe Mulcany Avenged. Chlcigo Tribune. "Stop that horse car ! " It was a balmy afternoon in August, and all tbe world seemed wrapped in a mantle of loveliness. Tho wind was sing ing through lawn and garden iu a drowsy fashion, and the flowers that lined the graveled walks of Coastcliue castle seemed to be beckoning with loving hands to Lady Esmeralda as she sat in graceful poise on a velvet covered fauteuil and gazed in a languid; dreamy no-washing-to-be done for-thiee-days manner upon the pageant of nature that was passing before her ryes. j Dut when the voico of one she knew, one she had loved with a deathless tender ness in tbe halcyon days gono by, catne floating to her on the scented breath of tbe morning, a thrill passed through hjer, aud the e;es erstwhile so listless, glearied with the baleful fire of revenge. Looking eagerly across the croquet ground she saw Pizarro McGinuess, the man who ad scorned her love, coming across tbe fots ou a run, while far in advance, and cow almost opposite CoastcliGe castle was a horse car. Tbe girl smiled grimly to lier self. I "Stop that car," shouted Pizakro again. , Tbe smile faded from tbe pretty face now, but no look of pity took its plajc " Divila stop will be get from me,1. She murmured, and went into the house, j In, a few moments there was a ra at the door. Esmeralda answered it, found Pizarro there. "You Ihavel Wighted my life, I woman," ne saia."
