LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, MONDAY, AUGTJST 28, 1882. lancasiof f nteUffiencet. MONDAY KVBNINO, AUG. 28, 1883. THIS SIX QIBL TBAMTS. Ending Tbalr walk ml Moatfa TferoBgb tba Hortb Carollaa Mountain. Saturday tho party of six girls who started about the 1st of the month; to walk all over North Carolina arrived; at Laarenborg, where their walk ends. They are all well and in good spirits, though much sunburnt, and are as comely a set of lady pedestrians as ever undertook a long tramp.. Theystarted in the neighborhood of Hendersonville nearly a month ago. To the suggestion that by going alone and with no one to. protect them they would subject themselves to insult they replied that they were willing to make the attempt, and they aver that from first to last they had never received one rude word or rough jest from anyone. On the first week of their trip they suf fered much from exhaustion and tho youngest and frailest of their party, Miss Murdock, had to stop and rest, because or severely blistered feet. It was feared that sue would have to abandon the trip but sue pushed on nobly and after the eighth day began to strengthen and is now one of the healthiest of the fair tramps. Her weight when she started was but 82 pounds and she turns the scales to-day at 1U3 pound?, All save two of the walkers fattened after the first week, while two who were in clined to obesity were pulled down twelve and eighteen pounds. Their records show that they made lour hundred and twenty miles. They started out with tho expec tation of making between five and six hundred miles. .Each walker wore a pair of stout red leather walking shoes and wore short walking dresses, and carried strong stall's in her hands and a knapsack upon her shoulders, in which was packed a hammock and other necessary articles. They also wore very broad-brimmed hats, which, however, do not seem to have pro tectod their complexion, for they are all burned brown. Two of tho party carried pistols as a protection from accidental in cursions of wildcats and bears. Much of tho timo they slept in the open air in their hammocks, under canvas coverlets, which were used as a shield from heavy dews ami rains. One night ten days ago, ap prehending a severe storm, they camped in a graveyard and slept between tho graves. Another night, iu the mountains they were thrown into consternation by tho appearance of a bear, but tho beast was as frightened as thoy were, and fled without offering to molest them. In the mountains they wore in great terror of rattlesnakes, but did not encounter any of the reptiles. Along their route they were treated kindly. Many of tho hospitable farmers entertained them, but they shunned noto riety and avoided all tho towns and vil lages, frequently going somo distanco out of their way rather than meet crowds. A novel feature of their undertaking was the keeping of what they called their log book. In this the record of their impres sions and adventute? was kept, each taking thoir turn. Tho book contains twelve hundred and forty-six closely writ tin pages. Thoy end tho trip now be cause throe of their number will begin their school days early iu September, but they :isi.crt their determination to walk over the unexplored portion of tho state next .summer The Nn:i Ciirollua Mormons Must Go. Tho residents of Cleveland county, N. C, held an indignation meeting to take steps to compel the emissaries of the Mor mons, who have for several months been endeavoring to make converts iu that sec tion of the country, to leave. Tho actious ot tho Latter Day Saints having been the cause of considerable disturbance among the people, resolutions were adopted call ing npom them to depart before the indig nation of the pooplo becamo uncontrolla ble, or serious troublo would be the re sult. An address to the pooplo calling upon them to unito in driving out tho Mormons has also been prepared, and unless tho missionaries depart bloodshed may be expected. Mokbob, Mich., Sept. 23, 1S75.
