LANCASTER DAITAT IXTErXIGrENOER, MONDAY, "AUGUST 21, 1882. ;t PANIC ON A STEAMER. SIX I'ASSKMIKBS KADLY INJURED. A U-oken Cylinder Gtutei an Karly Mori1 Ibs Scare on One of tbe Boats on the Hadaoa. Shortly before two o'clock, Saturday morning, as the steamer Kaaterekill, of the New York and Catskill line, was coming down the Hudson river and while in tlio Highlands her passengers were sud deuly awakened from sleep by a tremen dous shock and the loud rattling of ma chinery, followed by a great rush and roar of escaping Etcam. People ran out of the staterooms in their night clothes. Hen Minuted, women screamed and children c.itsd. The greatest excitement prevailed. A cloud of hot vapor tilled the cabins and tbo saloon. The alarm of the people was aggravated.by the fact that the nature of the accident was not fully understood. Some of the passengers thought that one of the boilers had exploded, and others imagined that tbo boat was sinking. Cap tain James Stead and his subordinates did all in their power to allay the excitement, and a panic would have been prevented had it not been for a man among the pas bengers who shouted : " Put on your life preservers as soon as you can, for the steamer is going to the bottom." Many of the people hastily douued life preservers and one panic-stricken womau jumped overboard into the water. She was rescued by a deck hand. In the ineauiitne some of the frantic ones among the passengers requested the captain to Iihvo the life boats manned. The captain assured the people that the lifc-boats were in readiness for use if required, but they would not ba needed, as the steamer was not kinking. In the meantime tho cloud of Kteam that enveloped tho boat was be coming nioro dense and for a time it Kcemed that if tho people remained ou board they would be scalded to death or killed by inhaling the hot vapor. Under the exciting circumstances the captain and crew exhibited remarkable coolness and presence of mind. They attended to their duties like heroes. As soon as tho confusion had in a meas ure subsided it was asceitaincd that the walking beam bad broken, causing the piston to strike the bottom of tho cycliudcr which was also broken, thus permitting tho escape of steam. As soon as possible the engineer shut off the steam, so that it could not come from the boilers to the cylinder, and (he rush and loar of the scalding vapor ceased. Tho Kuatcrskill, at the time of tho accident, was near Kipp's Point in the Highlands. Tho night was dark, there being no moon, and the feeble light of the stars being obscured to a great extent by a haze which hung over tho river. Tho steamer was subsequently towed by the Rhinebeck and another tug to Caldwell landing. Tho passeugeis were landed at Caldwell, from which place they were brought to New York by the Coxsackie boat, William C. lied field. Captain Tremaine, of the Redfield, told this story of tho accident. "The Kaa terekill," be said, "was somo distance ahead of us. When nearly opposite West Point I noticed her showing a signal of distress and immediately steamed along side of her and found that she was an chored. Tho walking-beam had been broken clean off near tho connecting rod. I saw one end of tho break in tho iron myself, and it was as bright as a new silver dollar: so that there was no flaw in it. I took all the passengers, about ouo hun dred and fifty, and brought them with their baggage to New Yorifc, leaving the Kaaterskill at anchor. I could not learn the names of all of tho injured passen gers." The Kaaterskill had on board about 150 passengers aud a largo load of freight. Six persons were wijurod as follows : Viuceuzo Calles, an Ilaliau laborer, of 35 Mulberry street, New York, is proba bly fatally injured, being scalded about the head and body. Ho was brought to New York and is now in tho Bellcvuo hos pital. Michael Garlai, an Italian laborer, also of No. 35 Mulberry street, both hands scalded. Ho was treated at Chambers street hospital aud sent to his home. Mrs. Samuel Greene, wife of tho local Height agent of tho steamboat line at Batskill, was scalded about the face and nhouldcrs by the escaping steam. She was sent from Caldwell to her home in Catskill. Her injuries, though serious, are not dangerous. Miss Mary Hinmau, sister of Mrs. Green of Catskill, injured by inhaling steam. She was sent to her homo. Her condition wrs not considered precarious and her ro covery is almost certain. Major A. S. Russell, county warden of Bellevue hospital, received internal injur ies, but is not considered in a dangerous condition. He was in his room at Belle vue to-day, where he was attended by tho Hospital pliysiciau. Au unknown man was slightly scalded. m Monroe, Mich., Sept. 23, 1875.
