AFTER THIS SALE. i The wagon, with nigh fantastic told Or household goods. Is at the gate ; Ttic shadows darken down the roaa ; Why does the old man wait ? Bureau, bedstead, rocking-chair. Upturned table with heels In air Whatever the grudging fates would spare. Lies huddled and heaped and tumbled there, A melancholy freight! Ol all his riches," the teamster said, " Now only this precious pile remains ! A blanket and bed for his old gray bead. For all bis life-long pains. Hani case, I own ! but they say that Pride Must have a tall." His ropes lie tied In the chill March wind. "Hurry up!" Ho cried. And gathered in the reins. The old wife bows her stricken luce On the dooretoae, weary and worn and gray. The old man lingeis about the place. Taking a last survey ; Looks in omce more at the great barn dooj , On the empty mow and the vacant floor ; All the gains of his life have gone before, And why should he care to stay? Willi slow, disconsolate, bro'-cn talk. They look their last ami pass the gate ; Tiic wagon Is gone and they must walk A mile, and it's growing late. She bears a parcel, he lilts a pack, Bui what do they bee there, up the track. Against the sunset, looming black 7 'TIs strange! Hie wagon Is coming back, Willi Its melancholy freight. And what Is the driver shrieking out ? Now Heaven, lor a imminent, keep theui sane ! "Turn about! turn about!' they bear blm shout. As he flourished whip anil leln ' 1 ou'vea homo and a good irlcnd j et, you'll find!" A coach is following close bchlnd: A face a voice Oli, Heaven be kind ! Oh, Hp that tremble and tens that blind ! Oil, breaking hearts ! it's .1t.nK ! J. T. Trowbridge, in Our Continent. A Orand Harvest. Germantown Telegraph. From all parts of the couutiy we have concurrent reports of tbe abundance of nearly or quite all the- staple crops pro duced by our agriculture. JNot only is the prospect good, but already the receipts at tbe leading commercial centres of the kc.i- board and the West far exceed those of last year at llio convhitouding periods. Wbat was still mora remarkable is tbo fact Ibat tbe European harvests are rather short, especially those in the British Isles ; while tbo troubles iu Ireland niterleie very sadly with the harvest there, and tbe' Egyptian war threatens tbat country with famine. Thus financiers and speculators appear at tbo present time to agree- iu re garding tbo condition of things commer cially as highly favorable to auolber large increaso of the balance of trade iu favor of tbis republic in her commerce with the world at large. It is truo tbat nominally this balance has still been in our favor duriug the whole of tho past year, not withstanding tbo shortness of tbo crops of last season ; but nevertheless, tbo cur rent of gold turned towards Europe and has caused ii a net loss of at leabt $20, 000,000 of our stock of gold ; while at; the time our foreign debt has agatu been in creasing iu cuiihcquencu of tbo enormous tail way building movement, in this coun try and tbe excessive demand for large loans of money for tbat purpose abroad and at home. But it isfltow considered quite probable that tho American harvests will bo so vast as to stimulate a tremendous export trado in all our food-products in agricultural staples, and thus to compel the European bankers to niako exchange cither by ship, ment of gold hither or by the return of immense masses of American stocks and bouds. These alternatives would be quite acceptable to tbo country, for although the gold would of course bo preferred, as under all circumstances tho best aud most substantial consideration, yet tbo liquida tion of tbe whole of tbe foreign debt is tho greatest possible desideratum known to American finance. It will be perceived that tbis present prospect is wholly duo to tho blessings of Providence upon tbo labors of our bus baud men in tboso arts which some politi cal economists have foolishly discouraged as lit only for barbarians, We bavo so v. oral time, spoken of last year's crops as having been unusually short, but wo must beg our readers to bear in mind that those crop. supplied all tbe wants of our own people with a largo margin for export aud a considerable surplus to carry us Eafely through tho year until tho new bar. vest of the present seasou could be gar nered. Wo consider this as a temarkable illustration of the safety of this country from the dangers of famine, since it was precisely a similar stato of affaire which in 1880 forced France to ship to "the United States $10,000,000 iu gold to buy food to supply the deficiencies of her own crops. The remedy is lully the article to attack tho disease, both inlcrally, through the absorbents, and is the only reliable laliona' moduot treatment.
