It was rumored throughout Lehigh Val ley on Slonday that Sullivan, tuo prize fighter; would pass up tho valley to Wilkesbarro ou a morning train. - At Eas- ton several persons assembled at the depot to see him, but ho was not on board. There was on tho traiu a shirt agent who somewhat resembled Sullivan, and at the persuasion of the conductor ho agreed to impersonate the prize-fighter. At points of the road to Bethlehem various crowds gathered to see the prizo-fighter, aud an operator who was taken into confi dence, flashed tho news up the valley that Sullivan was coming. At Bethlehem there was a crush of mill men at the depot. At Allentown a crowd cheered for Sullivan, and at Weissport the iron works had to stop running until, the train had passed, as the workmen flocked to the station to see Sullivan. Tho agent appeared on the platform and bowed to the crowds at each station and the joke- was kept until. the agent left the train at Mauch Chunk. How a Drunken Man was Saved. William Meighan, a drunken man, throw himself on the down track of the Pennsylvania . & Arubov -railroad, four miles below Burlington, N. J. The driver of tno nan-past Y o'clock up freight tram, which was going at full speed, happening to eaten a gumpse of him, stopped at the next station below 'Burlington and tele. graphed news of the fact up the line. The men in charge of the express train leaving here at a. qutater to 8 were notified juafc as they were moving out of the depot. They cautiously steamed down towards the spo and the engineer seeing a black object in front of him on the traok put down the brakes. The train was brought to a stop within a foot of tho objecrr-which proved to bo William Meiehan. .He was thrown into-a baggage. car and put oat at the next telegraphing; up the line Meighan would have undoubtedly been. killed, as if tho train had been going at its usual speed it would have been impossible to have stop ped in time. Nine Million Feet or Lumber Burned. Fire at Grand Rapids, Mich., destroyed 61000,000 feet of. lumber, owned by the Michigan barrel company, and burned six dwellings and damaged, several ethers. Total loss is estimated at $100,000. . An incendiary fire broke out in the lum ber yards ef the MinnaaBOlis mill com pany, Minneapolis. It is estimated that 3,000,000 feet of lumber, mostly clean, has been burned, on which tho loss is' about 150,000. A portion of the burned lumber was piled in close proximity to the gas works. As an explosion was, imminent, the gas was turned int the river about 9 o'clock, leavine the city in darkness. The fire is believed to be under control. The loss on lumber is $80,000, and to the gas company, 4)6,000. An Actor' WUe's Inheritance. The stories that the wife of Charles R. Thome, jr., an actor at the Union Square theatre, New York had fallen heir to a fortune were verified by tho admission to probate at the register of wills' office of tho will by which Mr. and Mrs. Thome come into possession of their property. Mrs. Thome was the daughter of Joseph Swift, of Philadelphia, who died reoently I at his residence, No. 1523 Walnut street, leaving property valued at nearly a mil lion dollars. Mrs. Thome is given $5,000. absolutely by the will, and after her sis ter, Emily S. Balch, is given the family residence and furniture, the balance of the estate is placed in tbe care of . the Philadelphia trust company, which is to nav one-half the income to Mrs. Batch, and one-half of the remainder to Mrs, Thorne and the other half to her children. A plaster cast of the face and hand of Miss Fannie Parnell, who died on Friday at Bordentown, N. Mr. Heath says that Miss Paruoll's face was quite natural in death, and that he had no difficulty in making a fine job. The cast' of the hand was taken at the re quest of Mrs. Parnell, the mother. A marble bust will bo mado from the plaster for Miss Parpell's distinguished brother, Charles Stewart Parnell, with whom sho was a great favorite. Departed Ulory. The skeleton of the central transept is all that remains of the Main Centennial buildine. and about twenty workmen are engaged in razing it to the ground. Piles of iron, glass and ornamental wooaworK are scattered promiscuously around the famous structure. A considerable quantity of tho iron taken from tho building ha3 beeu shipped to Pittsburgh.
