UIMqUOTIIiJUIH SMI r..prTTi-. LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, TUESDAY, JULY 18,1882. K THE TOBACCO MABKET- UUTLOUK FOK THE MEW CJXUr. Tlio Hew lork Market The Planta if rialH I tbe After an extended tour thron?h the lower end of this county, and havintr in terviewed many of the most successful giowers of the weed, We find the outlook there" Tory unsatisfactory to the gamer and the prospects are certainly bluel In tho first place there are no fields thai are fully set, nor will there be, notwithstand ing the favorablo rains. In fact the more lain there is the more cut worms (here seera to be. We have seen plenty of fields tUat have been planted all over five titles ; aud now are not set. One grower told as te planted seven times and now bad given it up. He showed us cut worms three iqches loug, and said he had frequently caught several at one plant. Another showed us real fine, large, healthy plants cut offjtbat had been growing for two weeks. I We saw fields that had been entirely aban doned some of them having been sowed in Hungarian grass, others planted in sweet corn. In some sections ants are working badly, especially so on sandy soil. It iB true there are some few fine lots but few of anyj sizy half acres and some larger showing rapid growth. A small portion is topped, but the majority is no larger in , the (leaf than a man's band ; and what will it by August 1st is the question that agitates tbe farmer's mind. If tobacco is nof, lit to be stripped early in August it is not likely to make a good big leaf. Besides tbe risk of an early fall is serions ; tie nights are ahcady too cool. All farmers agree on ono thing ; that tobacco is fully three weeks late, anu at least not more than three-fourths of :it is well started ; and that the acreage ont is not as large as last year ; so that a three fourth crop will not be realized id tbe lower end, with the most favorable season. Should there not bo a very rapid improve ment during the next four weeks it will be a serious matter to tbe farmers, aud will only make many of them discontinue the raising of tobacco. For some reason tobac co growing is bzcoming mo.e unpopular among farmers. It is not exactly in their line, and wo are told that it does not pay them. Wo know of several of tho largest farmers in tbe lower end who raised line crops for tbe last few years, but who plant ed none this year. From other sections of tho county not visited by us, we have icpurts of a similar character, borne fields', planted early aud favorably located, promise a fine yiold;but unless the weather should be exception ally favorable not more thau three fourths of a crop can bo counted on, and if a drouth of any considerable duration ensues, less thau half a crop will be real ized. Our local packers aic doing very little in old tobacco. Now and then small sales are mado to meet tho demands of tho cigar manufactureis, but thero have been no heavy transactions sinco our hist report. Small lots of the crop of 1831 continue to be picked up at prices tanking from 5 2 for trash, up to 20(u,3 for good lots. There maybe yet some two thousand cases of looso tobacco iu the county await ing purchasers, but buyers aud sellers are too tar apart iu their views to dicker. ATnln Leaf. We have received from William H. Simmons, of Bird-in-Hand, a very peculiar twin leaf of tobacco. It is about 15 inches long aud nearly as -wide. At about two thirds tho distance from the stem to tbe point of the leaf the mid-rib appears to have been in some way injured; wheie upon tho loaf sent out two mid-iibs one on cither side of tbe damaged one. Twin leaves are not uncommon, but the peculi arity of theouebefoieusis, that it appeal s to have growu backward from the point at which the mid-rib was damaged, forming two perfect leaves, all the way back to tbe stem. Although the market exhibited consid erable animation, the situation is almost unchanged. Hero and thero a holder or '80 Pennsylvania gets "sick" of the stock and aceopts the prevailing offer of 12 to 15 cents, with a pleasant funereal smile aud fists clenched under cover of his trousers' pockets, but as a rule the mass of holders still "stick" to it; aud though not entirely unwilling to lend their ears (gigantic oues at that, in some cases) to the persuasive arguments of a bear broker, they hope that at some day not very dis tant tbe stock trill go off like well, like, Arabi Bey from bombarded Alexandria. Nearly tbe same condition prevails in other '80 tobaccos. Whoever oilers such stock at reasonable figuies can sell it. Buyers don't want to take auy risks. If compelled to buy at high Iigurcs they buy very sparingly. Iu a few months tho 81 will be ready for the market. Tho packers claim for t superiority to the '80. They themselves are loud iu proclaiming that the superior yield and quality make it a cheaper article than tho '80 tobacco. What wonder, then, that prospective buyers don't touch '80, except at low prices. The proposed exclusion of rebate from tbe reduction of the cigar tax, has affected tbe market to no 6tna!l degree. No rebate will cause a stand-still in cigar manufac turing circles for several months. It is to be hoped that a rebate will be obtained. The demand for export tobacco is not quite so extensive as was expected when the German monopoly scheme was defeat ed some weeks ago. Exporters complain that they cannot buy anything suitable here. Of course not. For 4 cents bobody is willing to sell flue wrappers, even though the thermometer has been in tbe nineties several lays this week. The sales of the week were as follows ; Pennsylvania Crop '80 : 800 cases ; run uing, 13 to 15 cents. Connecticut Crop '80 : 250 cases ; some very fine wrappers at 38 to 45 cents ; some inferior at 22 to 30 cents. Crop '81 : 1,200 cases ; seconds 11 to 12 cents; fillers, 4 cents. Ohio Crop '80 : 300 cases, C to 9 cents. New York State Crop '80 : 250 cases, private terms. Havana Market modcraloly active. Sales 600 bales. Prices firm. Sumatra Tobacco Its Increasing Popularity. N. Y. Tobacco Leat. We-have several times within tho last year made reference in these columns to Sumatra tobacco, aud our readers who hare watched the increment in the impor tation of this class of foreign tobacco will appreciate tho presentment of iigurcs which we fire below relative, to its impor tation during the last fiscal year ended June 30. The exact total amount import ed daring that time was 774,715 pounds, or, taking 175 pounds "as the average weight per bale, 4,426 bales. This ven ues cbe statement of eminent authority, mate tome time ago, thatthe'unnurtation of this toeaccoifo'r tho year would approx imate 5,000 bales, If we mistake not, tbe total amount imported the previous year was about 2,000 bales, showing that the consumption has increased more than one hall durinir the last ' 12 mont.hn. If the increase in the use of Sumatra to- bacc continue, in tbe same ratio as S his since its introduction here a year or two ago and we see no good reason wbyitjsfconld not at the end of the next deoadt the annual imnort will amount to 25.000 Bales. This tobacco has grown, and is growing still more, in the favor of cigar raanafac- turers, account ,of ita rir oqrlor and crreatfelasticitv tho qualities needed to make a good wrapper. When first in troduced in this market it was peddled about and sold one bale at a time; but now, since its superior wrapping qualities have become known and appreciated, it is sold in good sized lots, and at good prices. The prices range from GO to 84 cents per pound in bond, the duty being 35 ceuts per pound and 10 per cent, ad valorem. The latter impost will bo abolished after January 3 next, and then Sumatra tobacco will only bear the burden Havana tobacco does, that is, thirty-live cents a pound. I t Josh Billing Heard From.
