LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER WEDNESDAY JULY 5, 1882. All AGBIOULTUBAL. GOOD CONDITION OF TUB CROPS. Sorts el Staple Plentiful Tobacco Troubled wltb the Cat Worm. A stated meeting of the Lancaster coun ty agricultural and horticultural society was held iu their room in City hall on Monday. The meeting was unusually small, only the following named officers and members being present : Joseph F. Witmer, president, Paradise ; M. D. Kendig, secretary pro Um., Cress well ; John H. Landis, Manor ; Henry Kurtz, Mount Joy ; Levi S. Reist, Oregon ; C. L. Hunsecker, Manheim township; Israel L. Landis, Manheim township ; Peter S. Heist, Lititz ; F. R. Diffenderffer, citv: J. M. Johnston, city; w. W. Griest, city ; W. B. Paxson, Colcrain. Crop Keporta. Heports on the condition of crops being called for, Henry Kurtz, of Mount Joy, re potted the wheat crop as being unusually coml. He presented to the society a bunch of Fultz wheat, the stalks of which meas- uied live feet and eight inches in length, aud were very finely headed ; he expects the wheat to yield about forty bushels to the acre. The grass crop is pretty good, aud a cood deal of it has already been cut. Hay is selling at S18)21 per ton. Borne of the tobacco fields look pretty well and some of them very unpromising ; a good deal of prepared ground is not yet plautcd ; never knew the crop to bo so backward as it is this year ; in some sec tions the cut-worms are very troublesome and in some others they are not. Oats looks well, and t-o does the corn. Levi S. Reist, of Oregon, reported the wheat in his neighborhood as looking bet ter than it had looked for years, and tho grass much better than was expected a month ago. Apples are dropping off, and the prospect of a good crop is not promis ing ; tho York Imperial, the Baldwin and one or two other varieties are well set with fruit. Pears will be scarce. It is a curious fact that in some places thcic arc plenty of cherries aud in others, uul a half a mile away, tho tices are empty. Oats looks well. Tobacco is very inccular, some of the plants being well grown and others very hinall. On the whole, the con dition of farm crops is cucouraging. C. L. Hunsecker, of Manheim township, said the wheat never looked better. The Lay crop is a very good one and tho oats excellent. Tho corn is backward, but healthy looking, and thcic is promise of an immense crop, i roni nppearauco tho tobacco crop will not exceed that of last year. Potatoes are very promising. Of apples and peaches there arc some and of pears and cherries plenty. John H. Landis, of Manor, said the straw of tho wheat was heavy aud tho grain as fine as any ever grown here or elsewhere. Most of the grass has been cut and there is a full crop of hay. There was not much oats planted iu his neigh borhood. Tho peculiarity about the to bacco crop is that the cut-worm appears to have attacked it in spots ; three or four or half a dozen adjoining (arms will be found to be greatly troubled with the worm, while tho next three or four or half a dozen farms arc almost free Irom the pest. Apples are falling ofl' and tho crop will not be plentiful. Tho peach crop will be tolerably good tho tices arc not very full of fruit, but the fruit will be all the better. Thcio are no cherries in his neighborhood. W. B. Paxsou, of Colcrain, reported wheat very promising in the lower town ships. Where the grass was well set and not frozen out there is an abundance of hay. Coin is small but looks healthy. Oats is not promising, tlitro being a great deal of smut in it. There are very few peaches; farincis iu Colciaiu find it very difficult to get peach tices to grow ; don't think there will he live bushels ot peaches iu tho township Apples will be abuml ant ; cherries are .scarce. The early plant ed tobacco looks well and is growing fine ly, but there was great trouble in securing early plants. The later planted fields are ravaged by woi ms. President Witmer, of Paradise, said the leports from other township fairly stated the condition of crops iu ins own. As to to bacco great trouble has been experienced iu getting it Bet ; in the first place the season was late aud unfavorable, the plants small, weather much of the time unlit for plant ing ; then tho cut worm was very bad, compelling many of the farmcis to leplaut their fields several times. One of his neighbors who had set out 12,000 plants had 9,000 destroyed by the cut worm. He had noticed a peculiarity iu a number of cherry trees that were iu full bloom when a northeast rain storm set iu aud lasted for a week ; on the northeast side of the trees there is no fruit at all, while on the opposite side the trees are well filled. Shall We Hare a fair? Henry Kurtz wanted to know whether it was the intention of the society to hold a county fair next fall. Many of hi neighbors had bean asking him about it and seemed to bodcsiiousof cutering their stock in competition for premiums. He suggested Mount Joy as a good place for such au exhibition and offered fifteen acres of the land ou his farm is a proper place for holding it. Mr. Kurtz's suggestion Met with no en couragement ; tho president stating that the number present at the tweeting was too small to take action ou so important a matter. Owing to tho absence of the secretary aud the essayists nppoiuted at the last meeting the society iound itself without the usual topics for discussion ; and on motion, the matters intended to bo acted upon at this meeting were postponed to next meeting. liuuilgration. " Should immigration bo encouraged ;" was a question proposed for discussion by C. L. Hunsecker, who after stating the population of tho principal countries, of the world, and showing the almost bound less extent of our own, made a sensible ar gument in favor of encouraging tho imrui grationofindustrionsartizansand laborers. Nobody else appeared to tackle the problem ; Henry Kurtz merely saying that he had not intended to say any tiling on the subject ; "but au idea had just struck him ; this question of immigration reminded him of that passage iu the Bible where wo read that wo are ordered to go out into the highways and hedges and bring in the lame aud tho halt aud the blind and present them as au offering to tho Lord !" This luminous and conviuc ing argument raised a laugh, duriug which Mr. Kurtz sat down, and tho society sat down on the further discussiom of the subject. Strawberries and Cherries. J. H. Landis aud C. L. Hunsecker weic appointed to report upon three or four va rieties of cherries and one variety of straw berries laid before the society by Levi S. Reist, all of which wero commended by the committee. Adjourned.
