LANCASTER DAILY 1NTELLIGENCEE FKlbA V J USE 30, 1882. I ftaurashT utrlUaenm FEIDAY EVENING, JUNE 30, 1882. THE J?ODHALIAHS. Seber and MXDZCAL. e VEK A Primitive People, Who Keep Live en ueaur jh. There exists high up ameug the Car pathian mountains of Galicia, in a district known as Tatras, one of the most primi tive and unsephibticatad communities in Europe. The population of this remote region numbers several hundred thousand individuals. They neither use strong drink nor eat animal feed. Riches have no charm for them. Though peer, they are content, and though their diet is spare and monotonous, they enjoy perfect health and live long lives. The feed of these ar cadians is principally eats, cither simply boiled or gxeuud and converted into cakes. During four or five months of the year these of them who accompany their Hecks and herds te the mountain pastuics live exclusively en goat whey, el which each man consumes nearly a gallon a hv Pmetieallv. therefore. these goatherds live en the sugar and tbe mineral salts contained in the whey. They de net consider this regimen a privation, and when they return te the valleys at the end of the season they are as strong and vigorous as when they set out. The entire race of Tedhalians, as the people of Tatras are called, are rc Tnnrlmliln fur their vicrer and energy, and are iucenlcstably supeiier, physically and intellectually, te the neighboring pepula tiens. Their physique is of a rcmirkable purity ; they are quick of apprehension aud frank in manner. Though far from being highly cultured, the Pedhaliaus are poets and artists by nauie. They are lead of dancing, aud often, when ihe labeis of the day aicevcr, meet te indulge in their favorite diversion. They arc born improvisers, tee, and many of them can sing their own .songs set te music or their own composition. In the reptile depailmcnt ei'tlie aquarium, fifty six eggs had been laid by one of the l'c male pythons. Dr. Hermes at ence re solved te list the avaihbility of serpentine ova for human consumption as au article of feed. Te this cud he invited a select party of local gourmands te lunch, and commenced his experiment by boiling a python's cgir for several minutes and oll'er ell'er inrr it. euciictl in the usual manner te his guests, who, however, respectiully de clned te taste it, upon the ground that coekiug had produced no visible alteration in the consistence of its external aud in ternal substances respectively a greenish leathery skin and an opaque, yelkless, grey liquid. Net particularly fancying tle leek of this egg himself, Dr. Hermes pro ceeded te ei-.cn another, and he emptied its contents iute a frying pan. Adding butter and salt in due proportions, he seen .succeeded, with the aid of a gas stove, in producing a python emelettee, which in lep.nted te have smelt uncom monly appi-tizing. He valiantly swallow ed a immthfiil, and pronounced it su premely toothsome. Fired by his exam ple, all pit-sent then partook of the savory mess with apparent relish. A SURE REMEDY AT LAST. FRIDAY: The large window of 1301 Chest nut is full of figured silks pecu liar te the season; each piece marked with its price, se as te be. seen from outside. It is a splendid sight. Ne such gather ing of rich silk decorations can be seen within ninety miles of us ; that's certain. Yeu, who read but can't come te see. need te be told further, though we speak of these silks as rich, that they are net se costly as the word may seem te imply. The selling-time of such is coming te an end. The prices are net what they were. Seme arc a aenar a va.ru " , s" two dollars. We can afford some less new. It is worth something te make such an exhibit with July almost upon us. If wehave such a variety new, what must we have had a month age? This was written, supposing that at least a tenth part of these silks could be get into that window. Silk trade has been wonderful this year. Silks have come and gene, as if the wind blew them fn and out. Oiiieter times are coming new; but still we shall have no dull time; for where trade is ready goods always gravitate; and the duller the times elsewhere the mere gen erously the goods come. Next-outer circle, south entrance te main building. French printed sateens shall be named next te silks; for they were meant 10 ioek hkc mem nnrl te take their elace. But I they have come te have an im pertance et their own se great as te make one forget that they ever were an imitation of any thing. If you want te knew what we mean by sateens, you must see tnem iiere. sateenb are everywhere ; but fine sateens of pretty patterns somehow are by no means common. Ne ether house here has had a really geed stock of them. Seme very ugly stuffs have been called sateens. We have te say these things, be cause we can't otherwise be certain thateurmeaningis clear. We have had ever since Feb ruary hundreds of different sat eens, coming and going, at 50 cents te $1 a yard. low, as tne season advances, we make lower prices. 27JA te 6e cents; with 200 te 300 styles te cheese from ; none of them mean ; all fine ; the difference mostly in the color printing.
