' Deu't count your chickens before they are batched," is a very wise adage, and may be profitably applied by tobacco far mers as well as chicken fanciers or any ether class of people. And yet almost every body iu this sanguine, hopeful world docs leek ahead and count their chickens long before they get them. The tobacco farmer is doing se new, and has been do ing for weeks past. lie manures and plows, and ridges his field, sets out the tender little plant, leeks at it lovingly and says " grew little eue, two month hence you will be a mighty stock, bearing twenty leaves each three feet long and two feet wide, aud I will sell you for 23 cents a pound" and he believes it. Drive, if you please, into almost any section of tbis great county aud you will find upon almost every farm a garden-patch, or a cheice aeie, or a ten acre field, or even a larger space of the best land en the farm, set out with scrawny Jittle plants scarcely visible at a dozen leds distance. If tbe weather be dry, men, wetueu and children may be teen plodding through the fields with watciiug pets, moistening the roots of each tiny plant, aud giving it a chance te live. I! the sun be scorching het, the net plaut,is protected by a paper "toot" as carefully as if it was protected fiem frost, (while in its little bed), by a blank et of bristles or coverlet of canvas Hew many thousand acres of plants have liecu, aie being, aud will be set out nobody can yet tell. A ride up and down the two branches of the Penn sylvania railroad, between Laucastcr and Middletown, shows hundred of fields al ready planted, and the farmcis along the line busily engaged in planting mere. Ad vices from ether sections of the county aie te the same effect ; and it is very pre bable that net less thau 15,000 acres hate been or will be plautcd in the county before the 4th of July. In this respect cur county is unique. Ilcie tobacco growing is the rule ; as been as we leave its berdei s to bacco gi owing is the exception. Within a few days past we took a run through the Cumberland valley from llarrisburg te Carlisle aud a most beautiful valley it is, teeming with thousands of acres of wheat, rye, eats, potatoes aud ether crops but net half a dozen tobacco patches along the entire route could be seen from the cars. Ofcourse thfic are some patches about Mechanicsburg aud Siiiromaiistewn. Fiem Carlisle .south te Mount Helly Mieic is net a tobacco patch te be seen among all the fcrtile iiclds. The tobacco speculator might just as well search for his favorite weed among the barrcu rocky waste above Elizabctbtewu, which as Candidate Uresius some days age declared, " was net made in vain, but was like him self fashioned by divine Piovidcnce for seme wise but inscrutable purpose ;" but what that purpose is no fellow cau find out. It is probable that mere thau three three feuiths of the cntiic crop of tbe county has been planted, and the plauts though gcnuially small, leek healthy. In many sections, however, the cut has been very troublesome, and made it necessary te leset a gicat many plants. Then the weather for several days past has becu in tensely het, and though thcre have been several local rains, the plants have iu seme instances sufieicd from dreuth. Add te this the storm of wind aud rain en Bun day, which ' washed out or buried under many el the plants, aud it will be seen the planter's let is net a happy one. Sales of old tobacco iu our maiket have been lueicly nominal, the whole aggregat ing net mere than ISO cases, most of which went te California. Only a few dealers arc showing much activity in the purchase aud receipt of baled tobacco of the crop of 1881. U.S. Kcndig & Ben received at their Loineu street warehouse within the past few days about a dozen carloads, principally fiem lerk county or medium or low grades. Frauk Pentlargc also leceived a few carloads and a few wagon-leads have been delivered at ether waieheuses. A majority of the packers have finished their packings and discharged most of their men. Kcndig & Sen, however, have a fei co of 50 men yet at work, aud seme oilier houses have from six te a dozen. Within a few days the sampling of the caily-packcd leaf of 1881 will commence, aud we shall then be better able te judge of its merits thau new. Reports as te its condition are very conflicting, seme wise acies declaring that it is net sweating at all, and ethers that no crop has ever dene better. The Yerk Dispatch says : ' The bulk of the tobacco has net yet been planted iu Yerk county. The young plants were slew growing, aud new farmcis are wait ing for lain te put the ground in condition te tct out the plauts. Haymaking and pos sibly harvest will crowd en farmers bctore the tobacco can be planted." Seed Leaf and Havana. U. S. Tobacco Journal. Between the reluctauce of holders of old stock te sell at lower figuies and the reluc reluc taueo of purchasers te pay ruling ones, very little business is being transacted. Thcre is at least ene comfort in the fact that the tax question is new coming te a settlement. A few days if net hours will de away with this obstacle te trade for at least several months. A hindrance the tax will always be until entirely abol ished. However, in spite of the agitation, manufacturers of very cheap and of very geed cigars were and aie extremely busy. Medium grade cigars are very much ne glected. This is ene of the mysteries of the industry " no fellow has ever been able te find out." The feeling of the niaiktt is very buoy ant. All holders of new tobacco leek for ward te a brisk paying business, aud even holders of old stock are still hopeful of re alizing some profit. A few of the pesimis tically inclined leal dealers and holders of ;80 Pennsylvania concluded te get rid of their bargains this week, and closed out at low figures provided the reports of the " initiated " ones are correct. Certain it is that if holders of old tobacco will come down iu their prices, there will be no lack of buyers. There, was ceusiderable inquiry for ex ex eort goods, but owing te the faith iu the future of the home market, holders of such stock cannot be persuaded te seli at ruling expert figures. Besides, it is generally held that before long oxpertcrs will offer much higher figures than they de new.and that net alone old, but new expert goods as well, will find prefitable buyers. The sales for the week were as fol fel lows : Pcunsylvauia Crep "80 : S00 cases, 13 te 17 ceuts ; tillers, G.J cents. Connecticut Crep '80 : GOO cases, mostly wrappers, 27 te 35 ceuts. Wisconsin Crep '80 : 120 cases, 8 cents. Ohie Crep '80 : 400 cases, 1 te 9 cents ; about 200 for expert. Havana Market continues active. Ne change in prices. Sales 700 bales. The New Tork Market. Following are the sales of seed leaf tobacco reported by J. S.Gans' Sen & Ce., tobacco brokers, Ke, 131 Water street, New Yerk, for the week ending June 26, 1882: 800 cases 1880 Pennsylvania 6 te 18 cents; 300 cases 1881 New England, seconds and fillers, p. t.; 200 cases 1880 Ohie 6 te 11 cents; 180 cases 1880 Wisconsin Havana seed, 8 te 11 cents. Total, 1,436 cases. The New Yerk Tobacco Leaf reports the trade in Western tobacco quiet; Virginia leaf dull, with a prospect of its remaining se until Congress settles the tax question. Seed leaf shows a slight improvement. Fer manufactured tobacco there is fair in quiry, and though there is a pressure (or reduced prices manufacturers of geed to bacco decliue te lower them. Smoking tobacco is in'goed but net in active request. The cigar market is steady and moderately active. Phlladelpbia Market. Seed leaf dealers report trade very quiet. Thcre are but lew goods being sold at present. Manufacturers seem te prefer working up their old stock, and wait for further developments of condi tion, etc., of new leaf. Seme new Con necticut seconds have already been sold in our market ; they are reported as open ing much better than expected. It is ru mored that Wisconsin seed received a set-back last week by the non-acceptance of 1,000 cases, bought iu New Yerk, sub ject te resampling ; they wcre net up te the mark. The leek-out for leaf tobacco is premising. Havana Geed goods offered and freely taken at full figure?. Receipts for the week : 286 cases Con necticut, 342 cases Pcnusylvania, CO cases' Ohie, 82 cases Wisconsin, 23 eases state seed, 103 bales Havana, 170 hhds Virginia and Western leaf tobacco. Sales have been : 186 cases Connecticut, 273 cases Pcunsylvauia, 26 cases Ohie, 38 cases Wisconsin, 18 cases state seed, 90 bales Havana, and 73 hhds Western in transit direct te manufacturers. Exported of leaf tobacco te Liverpool, per steamer British Queen, 11,289 lbs ; per steamer Lord Gough, 46,372 de ; total 60,661 de. The Wisconsin Crep. Our farmers iufesra us that tobacco plants will net be set out much before the last of this month. But, however, we hear that four acres have been set out near Jaucsville. It is estimated that mero laud will be planted in tobacco in this state this season than ever before. Edyer Edyer len (Wis.) Tobacco Reporter, June 16. Tobacco Notes. The funny man of the Norristewa Her ald says : "A graduate of the Pennsylva nia agricultural society purchased 5,000 cigars last week. He says he is going te plant them and raise a crop of tobacco, as he has been told there is money in it. Ard yet seme editors who don't knew the A B C of farming, want the Pennsylvania agri cultural cellege abolished." The funniest part of the abeve joke is that Gen. Beaver, the head and front of the agricultural se ciety, is the Herald's candidate for gover nor ! The greatest smoker in Germany must ccrtaiuly be Prince Charles, the Emperor William's brother, who consumes daily from 18 te 25 strong Havanas. A cigar holder has just been made for the prince, by which he can smeke thrce cigars at a time. The iuvetcrate habit has net in jured the prince's health, for in spite of his 81 years, Pritice Charles is strong aud active, is devoted te huntiug, works hard at his military duties, and wears no spec tacles. We learn from reliable authority that the defeat of Priuce Bismarck's schemes regarding tobacco monopoly, and, that failing, the increase of internal taxes en leaf tobacco, has had a wholesemo effect en the tobacco trade of Bremen. Our leading exporters in this city accordingly anticipate a return of the usual lively business tbis fall. Some of the tobacconists of Leck Haven, Pa., display the sign, " Ne Goods Sold en Sunday," a gentle reminder te buy en Saturday what you want for Sun day.
