LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER MONDAY MAY 29, 1882. Eancastcr i:ntcllinicrr. MONDAY EVENING, MAY 20, 1882. TYILKKSIJAKKE AllUVHV.lt. A Kally te Inderee the Independent Move ment Forming a club. Wllkesbarrc Dispatch te the Times. Yesterday morning the Recerd of the Times, of this city, the Republican party organ, tore the Beaver ticket from its masthead, te the sudden surprise of every body. The paper up te that time had been a strong advocate of reform within the party, as it is termed, although its denun ciation of Cameren aud boss rule had re cently been very pronounced. Te day the journal was fiercely bitter and its adver tising pages contained a column call for a " grand Republican rally this evening te j atify the nominations made at the .Re publican convention held iu Philadelphia n May 24," The call was sigucd by a lung list of prominent Republicans, most ei whom have heretofore fought with Cameren and the bosses. Among the Mgners was Dr. Bradley, editor of the Recerd, and though he did net raise the Independent ticket te-day he will de se en Monday. Ever since morning the political coteries have been iu a whirlwind of excitement. Twe weeks age it was difficult te get any body te attend the Independent conven tion as a delegate. Te-day every Repub lican in the city appears te have deserted Beaver and the bosses, and the rally to night in the large hall of the court house proved that the working feices in Luzerne may be safely counted en for the Inde pendent ticket. About an hour befere the meeting a heavy rain set in, and this rather damp ened the enthusiasm of many. This drawback was supplemented by the ab sence of a baud, which, though engaged, failed te come. Notwithstanding all this the court house was filled by a large num ber of prominent politicians. Ex-Postmaster Smith called the meeting te order and nominated Jehn Welles Hollenback as chairman. On taking the chair Mr. Hollenback s.iid he supposed he was ehe.ss-u, net because he was a politician but because he was net. " I take it," said he, " that this meeting is te dciuon dciuen dciuon btrate in an emphatic way a pretest against the lingiulc, or in ether weids that the people believed in making the laws and having them made for the peo ple" The following gentlemen wcie chosen vice picsidents : Charles Parrish, cx-Rep-scutative Charles A. Miner. J. H.Sayer, Ivcu Davis, Frank Bainett, Dr. Crawford, Fred Neinicycr, Jonas Leng aud Gee. II. Leach, jr.; Secietaiics : Captain T.C. Par ker, Dr. Viriciitiue, Captain C. A. Harri son, Fred Reutclhubcr and Captain H. Crandall. The resolutions of the Indepen dent convention were read, and, en mo tion of Editor Biadley, wcre adopted. The first speaker was Allan II. Dicksen, the law partner of Governer Ileyt. He was followed by J. Vauguan Darling, ene of the best known mcinbcts of the Lu Lu zerne bar. Ills speech was in favor of an honest civil service, aud he thought this could only come by the success ei the j present Independent movement. Dr. Brad ley was the last speaker. On hi- motion It was resolved te organize a Wilkesbanc Independent club, aud Chailes P.irish was subsequently chosen as president, with Allan II. Dicksen vice president. m mm m Answkr Tnis. MONDAY: The bargains in colored dress goods te beget new are beyond all precedent. Accidents are all the time hap pening te passe goods, by which their prices go down ; and we think ourselves fortunate, when ever accidents happen se as te bring useful, though unfashion able, goods te you, through us, at prices which some of you are eager te pay. Such chances we properly call bargains. But they are bargains only for people of narrow means ; or for the great number,of wise people who pre fer te bfealtfays a little behind the quick fashion ; or for homely uses. But new the most fashionable colored dress-goods we have are fallen ; net a few, but many; net one or two sorts, but substan tially eighty sorts for we may count colors as sorts from your point of view. And they have fallen a quarter, a third, and even a half. $4 te $8.50 new buys such a dress as a few days age was sold for S te 12.50; the saving en the dress being just about $4. The goods are French melanges, silk-and-wool, and all wool checks and check-stripes. Wc are the mere explicit in making this extraordinary state ment; because advertisers are interested witnesses, and ought te be cress-examined sharply. Either we- tell the clear truth, or an unmistakable lie. And this is written for the eyes of these who have some doubtabeutour general habit in this regard. Third circle, southeast lrem centre. Black dress-goods afford bar gains tee ; net se many, nor se various, nor se extraordinary, but such as ordinarily would justify very strong language. The best catch among these bargains are Lupin's lainagc and zerlina, nun's veiling, lacc-bunt-ingandarmure-and-epen stripes. Nex't-eutcrchcle, southwest from ventre. Silk bargains. Later news would doubtless make this para graph truer, or fuller, at least. American black silk at Se cents ; black satin at $1 ; black surah at $1; rhadameat$i and $1.25 ; Parisian novelties in gen eral. Next-outer elide, southeast fiem centre. Laces. We should much like te set the most acceptable of them before you. It is a difficult thing te de. In general terms, we have an abounding stock of everything within our scope. Many things we have habitually enough below the market te call bargains, but for the fact that they are always here, and se get te be an old story ; such as Span ish laces, coarse antique tidies, hemstitch cellars, etc. We men tion only extreme examples. Ficelle is a tan hand-made linen lace which is having- se great success in Paris that our buyer there has sent us mere than we should buy, without first knowing whether it is going te succeed here. We are selling it low. Seuth et centre. The fixed-hoop-pannier skirt, which takes care of itself is se great a geed te ladies, and se sure te win general favor, that we return te it again and again. It costs $1.75 te $3, and is, en the whole, better than hair cloth at half the money. Still it doesn't act exactly as hair cloth does. In one respect hair cloth is better. In most respects this is better. Let every lady see it. It is a geed thing for us that we con trol it for Philadelphia. It would be a bad thing for you, if we put a large price en it, because we could de se. We don't. West of south entrance te the main building.
