LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER THURSDAY MAY 18, 1882. Kx-Coreuer GretTn'Funeral. The funeral of Ames Greff, ex coroner of Lancaster ceuuty, who died en Tuesday last at the residence of his son-in-law, B. a . lioekey, uonestega Centre, took place this morning, the remains being interred in the M. E. burying ground at Conestoga Centre. The attendance at the funeral was quite large, Mr. Greff having a very wide acquaintance. Mr. Greff was a farmer, and at one time owned ene of the best farms in the vicinity of New Provi dence. Entering politics he was elected coroner and at the close of his term of effice retired te private life. He was C9 years old at the time of his death. He leaves a family consisting of one son and four daughter, all of whom are married except one daughter. The Ceyle Case I.lkcly te lie Reversed. In the argument before the supreme com t of the case of the commonwealth vs. Jehn Ceyle, convicted of murder, the court indicated most strongly, that they would reverse the ruling of the court below It appears that the cemt instructed the jury that the insanity of the prisoner must be clearly proved. Chief Justice Sharswood asked the counsel for the commonwealth te refer him te a case in which such a measure of proof in case of insanity was ever exacted. This the counsel failed te de. Duiing the progress of the argument chief justice stated further that the words "clearly 2retcV, were equivalcnt.ef "proved beyond a reasonable doubt." which was net the law of the land. Thus the pris oner may have another chance for his life. A Narrow Iincape. Yesterday afternoon as Fred Goes, baker, of the firm of M. F. Goes &, Sen, accom panied by Fred Sturgis, was en the Colum bia pike near .Heir's lime kiln his horse, which is a young one, scared at a pile of dirt, plunged suddenly te ene side down ever an embankment and turning the wagon upside down, its occupants were tumbled out without receiving a scratch. As Goes found himself going he called te the herse which stepped ; had he net slop ped it might have cost Mr. Goes and Mr. Sturgis their lives. The wagon, which is badly wrecked, was taken te Doorsem's for repair?'. A Trained Rear. Twe burly-looking fellows have been exhibiting a peer, loucsemo and sick looking bear around through the sticcts of this city for several days past. The .tninial has been taught te de tricks and exhibits much tnoie intelligence than his owners, who make their living by him. A few days age the animal struck a boy with a large club which he uses te perform, iujuting him semewhat. He is kept tightly muzzled, and lliatiswc.il for his owners, or they would be quickly gobbled up by his bearship if he had the least chance. FAT At ACCIDENT, Killed 'While Bearding u Freight Car. It is com fortable en the hips, keeps off the heels, is invisible itself, and lends an invisible grace te the drapery, We find difficulty in expressing exactly its two-fold advantage ; its ease and grace. But scarcely any lady se far finds any difficulty in seeing both at the same glance. West of Chestnut street entrance te fhe main building Shoes. Same as yesterday, the finest shoes. We are going te say what everybody knows in a general way, and yet what everybody needs te be told. Certain finest shoes are in every shoe store of quality in every city. They are the same shoes, wherever theyare. Yeu can't recognize them as the and se the shepman same: charges what he pleases for them. If his "standing" is such as te enable him te. get $10 for them, he charges $10. If he can get $8, he charges $8. If $6, $6. His price is fixed by his own standing as a dealer ; net by the value of the shoes. This is the rule in shoes, and in all ether goods which you buy in confidence. Yeu pay according te your confidence. We "loathe, condemn, abhor, abjure" that rule. We put fair prices en our sfoeds ; net tee much ; net tee little. We have te be guided mere or less by the general practice et dealers. We sell spool cottons at cost ; because everybody else does ; but we don't make up such losses by extra profits en things that nobody understands. There are almost no shoe stores of quality in this city. One or two keep some of the same shoes that we call finest. They charge mere for them than we charge; a dollar or two mere ; because they can get it. We prcfci' net te get it. We zveuld rather have a growing trade than extra profit. De you see hew our trade grows in every direction ? Are we net wise in valuing such growth ? Is there any ether way te secure such growth than te give advantage for it? Let us say again, for greater plainness : If you buy fine shoes of a dealer who has a vanity about doing an exclusive trade, you pay a dollar or two or three for nothing. But it is better te buy where you have confidence than where you have net. That is another matter; outside of the subject of te-day. West of middle aisle, near Market street. A gentleman or lady wants a satchel or valise. Loek at sorts here. Yeu may pay $1 or $27. Yeu may pay only for strength and use, or you may pay for beauty, or the whim of Fashion. Seeing some hundred et styles together, you have the satisfac tion of knowing exactly what you de pay for. We ought te mention trunks; but another day. West of middle entrance, en Market street. The delegates te the Greenback-Laber state convention continued te arrive slowly this morning, and at 11:05 a. m., when the body was called te order in the court house, net mere than one hundred delegates were present. Com mittees en credentials, resolutions and per manent organization wcre then appointed aud a motion made te adjourn until 2 p. m. te await their reports. Before taking the recess, however, the convention ordered that the following telegram ba sent le Washington : 'Te Hen. C. N. Brumvi and James Mos Mes grove, Washington, D. Before the motion for a recess was car ried the convention get into a parliamen tary tangle te extricate it from which some little time was neecds.uy. A suggestion by seme of the delegates that instead of taking a recess the convention remain in session aud listen te speeches from various members was net at all kindly received. The convention was called te order at 2:15 and the icpert of the committee en credentials was submitted aud read. It showed that 911 delegates only weie pres ent, many sections of the state sending ue delegations at all. The committee en permanent organiza tion then reported, and E. E. Cotten, of Allegheny, was made president of the convention. Mr. Cotten, upon taking the chair, expressed his trratitude for the honor done him, and stated that he would use everv endeavor te give each aud all a fair and impartial heariug. Hen. Assistant Secretary Hilt's Kxauilnalieii Post poned. Washington, May 18. The Heuse committee en foreign a (Fairs held a session this morning, at which Mr. Rebert R. Hitt. late assistant secretary of state, at tended as a witness. Before he was sworn, however, Mr. Walker inquired of the chairman as te what points Mr. Hitt was te be examined upon, and Mr. Blount, at whose instance the witness had been summoned, stated that he would prefer te impart that information in execntive session. The rooms were accordingly cleared, and when the doers were reopened it was announced that the examination of Mr. Hitt would net be proceeded with this morning, inasmuch as the testimony taken before the sub-committee in New Yerk, in connection with which Mr. Hitt was te testify, was net yet in print. Ne action has thus far been taken en Mr. ShipLerd's letter of last evening te the chairman, but that matter will probably be taken into consideration and parsed by the committee te-day.
