LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCES MONDAY MAY 8, 1882. ilancastci Entellignicet. MONDAY EVENING, MAY 8, 1882. HOW 11C VOX UKK. A Touching and Romantic Story from tbe Wert. Chicago Tribune. ' Hew the wind means, papa." Snugly curled up in a big arm chair, her tiny feet peeping coyly from beneath the folds of a satin dress whose . dusky richness shone out in beautiful contrast te the rosy cheeks and sunnily-geld hair of its wearer, Adricnne Mclntyre was indeed a picture of bewitching beauty. He te whom she spoke was a man of erect and powerful frame, the few silver threads in whose hair showed that he was turning into the homestretch of life. But the face of this man, although illumined and beautified by the light of a holy, tender father love when speaking te the girl, was at ether times sad enough in the painful rigidity of its lines, and new, as the fitful glow of the open fire caused strange bhadews te leap around the richly furnish ed room, the face was given a weird, fierce leek that one sees in the pictures of the Vikines while wandering through the galleries of the Leuvre. The man's off feet moved uneasily, and presently he raised it and scratched his ether leg. The wind moaned again and the little head with its mass of Huffy flaxen hair that was ucsllud se cunningly within the bhapely white arm, and lay with such pretty con trast en the deep crimson velvet of the big arm chair, moved uneasily. ' What is the matterwith my little pet ?" asked Hareld Mclntyre, looking with grave earnestness at his child. The girl blushed rosy-red and began chewing an apple, but did net reply. " 1 see," said the father, glancing kindly at his child ; " you are anxious because one whom I might name is net here ; anx ious because you cannot hear his footstep. Is it net se, Adricnne?" The girl gave no answer. There was a Hidden lull in the fierce raging of the .storm, and nothing could be heard save the mu Hied crunching of the apple. Presently Adrienne spoke. " De you Manic me, papa, for being anxious and heartsick and lonely because Armand does net come ? De you blame me that fore bediugs of something dreadful fill my mind when the one whom I adore and whose ieve is my life fails te keep his tryst, fail te show upon schedule time?" Ne answer. Again the sound of the half munched apple. Five minutes pass ; long, lank minutes, that seem te Adrienne as if they would never get by. Then the father speaks. "Any man," he says, "who would ride two miles in a street car en a night like this, when thcre are plenty of billiard saloons within a block of his hoarding house, is a chump." " Oh father ! " cries the girl, " de net .say that ; you wrong Armand, indeed you de He may be thoughtless and giddy, and even dissipated (I heard he smoked a cigarrctte last week), but he is net a chump." As she ceases te speak the bell rings. Adi-icnue runs te the deer and flings her arms around a young man, who kisses her with the Lcavitt street warmth. " Yeu have come at last, my darling," the girl says getting ready te kiss, him again. "Yes," he replies. "But I cannot stay ; I must speak te your father at once." Stepping quickly into the parlor he leads Mr. Mclntyre into the shady recess of a bay-window and whispers a few words in his car. The old man's face lighted up with a beautiful, childlike -smile. "All the boys going te be there, you say'.'" he whispers te Armand. " Yes," is the' muffled reply. " Half a dollar ante and an oyster sup par at 12?" "Yes." Going te where Adricnne is sitting by the lire, the kind father leans ever her and says: "My darling, Armand has just brought me sad news. My old friend and paitncr in business, Etliclbert Simpsen, is dving, and has sent for me. Armand will show me the way te his house. I shall net be hack until late, and if this fierce storm, whicli I almost fear te face, docs net sub side, I may stay ever town all night. Geed by, my precious one " and, kissing her tenderly, the old man turned away. " Geed by, darling," said Aimand, kueel ing by Adticnne's side and taking her hand in his. " Yeu knew hew it pains me te leave you, but duty calls and I must obey." As the two men reached the gate the father said te Armand : " Yen are net such a sucker as I took you te be, and you shall he married te Adrieuce in the .spring." Uatti.u Cheek, Mich., Jan. 31. 1873.
