LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER THURSDAY MAY 4, 1882. 4 "-1 ftancasiet irtrlUflcncct, THURSDAY EVENING. MAT 4, 1882. WltONG UITCDED. What an Esteemed Contemporary Don't Knew About lAcmlPelIUca. The following view of the defeat of Kauffman, from the columns of our es teemed Stalwart contemporary, the Scran Scran ten Republican, would sound sweetly in the ears of our local Re-formers if it didn't happen that Mr. Eauffman has been in the Senate but four years instead of eight and that his late unsuccessful canvass was net a break for third term but rather a contest in a clearly defined issue in which Independence get a very black eye from the Republican's Stalwart friends : "Mr. Kauffman has represented his dis tuctwith credit in the state Senate for eight years, and it is possible that his third-term ambition had as much te de with his defeat as anything else, although the letter of Senater Mitchell doubtless helped te provoke a portion of the popular antagonism which led te the success of his opponent. The people der.'t take very kindly te these who show a disposition te held office all their lives, and Mr. Kauff man could well afford te make room for some one else at the close of his second term in the Senate without having te be thrust aside by a majority of five hun dred. Of course the cry is raised that Kauffman was beaten by the " machine," but this will hardly held geed in a dis trict where he was nominated four years age en the same issue by a majority of meie than a thousand, and where the people express their preferences at the primaries. It is a pleasure te knew that se energetic and premising a young mem ber as Jehn II. Landis, the author of the bill regulating primary elections, has been reneminated for the Heuse of Representa tives. He was an ardent supporter of Mr. Grew in the senatorial fight, and was regarded as one of the most earnest, use ful and upright members of the last Heuse. The result in Lancaster shows a creditable share of discrimination en the part of the peojue and a tendency te re buke dictation, whether it masquerades under tin: garb of independence or stmts in the gaudy panoply of the ma chine." WMUicr un tne Ferest Trees. The following letter from Mr. Jehn G. WhUticr indicates his interest in the sub ject el forestry : Oak lixe-i., Daxvebs. Mass., 4 Me., ', USA. Jehn I). Pcuxlee : My Deak Friend : I thank thee for the invitation te attcud the meeting of the ieicstry convention in the city of Cincin nati. Fer many years I have felt a deep iutcicst in the conservation of our for sts :nd the planting. of trees. The wealth, beauty, fertility and healthfulucss of the country largely depend upon it. My in dignation is yearly aroused by the need less sacrifice of some neble oak or elm, and especially of the white pine, the grandest tree in our weeds, which I would net exchange for Oriental palms. My thanks will be due te the public school which is te plant a group of trees in my honor. I could ask no better me morial. I have always admired the geed taste of the Sakekis Indians, around Scbage lake, who, when their chief died, dug around a beech tree, swaying it down, and placed his body in the rent, and then let the noble tree fall back into its original place a green and beautiful monument for the son of the forest. It would give me great pleasure te attend the convention, but my health is net equal te such an effort. I am, very truly, thy friend, Jehn G. "Wiiittiei:. Rattlk Cheek, Mich., Jan. 31, 1S79.
