I., despondent en account of ill health, committed snicide by sheeting himself in the head. Jehn Schneider, fifty years of age, a laborer employed at the new tunnel at Union Hill, N. J., was struck en the head by a steam shovel and instantly killed. The Henrietta mine, owned by Messrs. Taber, Blaine, Chaffee, Moffat, Wilsen and Kassler, has been sold te English and French capitalists for 1,300,000. The valne of the ero in sight is .said te be $700,000. Prof. Charles F. Eichhorn, organist of Trinity church, Newark, seated himself at the organ te practice, but the instrument gave lerth no sound. An investigation showed that there was au eel in the water pipe that supplied power for the bellows. Geerge Sceville, late counsel for Gui teau, has forwarded te Washington a long letter, addressed te the supreme court justices, withdrawing formally from the case and giring his reasons, personal and judicial, for doing se. Maria Hegan, aged 51, living en Third avenue, Xiew l erk, was standing en a lire escape en the fifth story of her house en gaged in hanging out clothes, when the lire cscape gave way and she fell te the ground. She was instantly killed. The mayor of Leng Island city has been arrested en the charge of misappropriat ing $113,936.GG, the proceeds of bends sold at various times since his aeecs -hJn te office in 1876. In Carben, Wis., Theodere P. Henckell, was-uttempting te start lire with coal oil when the can exploded with such force as te render him unconscious. His body was burned se badly as te be unrecognizable. Mr. Henckell is a carpenter in the employ of the Union Pacific. In Lake City, Minn., a fire biekc out at an early hour in the vicinity of the Lyens house, near the liver, and swept back diagonally through the city, destroy ing every business block except that known as the Lyens house block. The less is estimated at $150,000, partially in sured. The fire is new under control. Columbia. S. C, had a great storm the ether night, and a perfect volley of hail stones accompanied it. The hailstones were in abnndancc and the size of pigeons eggs, demolishing window glasses in green houses. A French plate glass, eue-quarter of an inch thick, was broken by the icy ' pellets. . ' In Crestline, Ohie, Marshal David Sned grass was shot and killed by a man he was trying te arrest. The man is supposed te ' be a burglar and the marshal was about te arrest him en suspicion. The murderer f was arrested and with difficulty taken te the jail, whence he was taken out by a mob te hang, but they desisted. I Congress has closed hearings upon river and harbor improvements, and the com mittee will besiu the final preparation of the bill which they expect 'te be prepared te report te Congress by the fourth of May. Frem the present indications the rrVer , and harbor bill this year Will recommend an appropriation of at least $15,000,000, which will be an increase of nearly $1, 000,000, overlbe bill of last year. ' In Charlette, N. C, a" colored man named Cain Memery was accidentally shot and killed. A bar keeper named ! Jaquins pointed a pistol at the deceased, ' which he unexpectedly fired, and the ball ' ledged near the heart. The man died almost instantly. At Beartown, Yt., au altercation oc curred between some gypsies and three roughs ever a deg fight. Aside from the probable death of a gypsy from a bullet wound, a man named Whittcn was shot dead by a gypsy. Twe families named Whitten aud Williams, were participants, and one of the Whittens is new under arrest, while the police are still looking for James Williams. A Tornado Tern Town. A fearful tornado passed ever Caire, 111., en Saturday, fiem a westerly direction. Although of but a few seconds'' duration, it blew down the colored Methodist church and four ethei buildings, unroofed ten or fifteccn buildings, and blew ever five load lead ed freight cars en the Wabash railroad. It nl.-iO did considerable damage te the city gas works by overturning the gasemeter, also completely destroying telegraph and telephone communications. Ne lives wcre lest, but two or thiee peiseus were slightly hurt. The tornado was accompanied by a heavy hail storm, which did considerable damage te windows and skylights. Litigation Over the Garfield Funeral Flowers. The magnificent floral tiibntes present ed by Queen Victeria and the Emperor of Brazil upon the occasion of President Gar field's funeral were brought te Chicago from Cleveland te be embalmed, the lady who secured the work being allowed in return the privilege of exhibiting them and selling photographs of thorn. The Garfield monument committee cut off the time of exhibition, compelling the lady te borrow money te complete the work. One of the leaders getting tired of waiting for payment get 'out a writ of replevin and the flowers were stewed away in the dusty rooms of a police justice where they are new. .Seme eminent legal talent has been j secured en each snie. Alleged Jtrutality at Elinira. Among the testimony taken before the Assembly committee investigating the al leged abuses at the Elmira reformatory, were, the following incidents : One Mo Me Mo Guire was insane aud the case was re-, peited te Mr. Beaeh, the deputy superin tendent, several times, but the man was kept at work till he was a raving maniac. Frank McGIynn began spitting bleed and the doctor refused te give him medicine, saying it was te excite sympathy. He get worse and was sent te the hospital. Soen after he was again put te work, and, refusing te labor, was put in the " soli tary " and strung up. by the wrists and kept that way several hours. He was kept at work several months and then taken away by his sister. He died en his way home. SfcXAIOK EAlli'S DINNER. led the way te the table at half-past aeven o'clock. The president was seated at the right hand of the host and the vice presi dent was seated at his left. The ether guests were Secretary and Mrs Chandler, Secretary and Mrs. Teller, Postmaster General Howe, Mrs. Frelinghuysen, Jus tice and Mrs. Field, Senater and Mrs. Jenes, Representative Crowley, Miss Crow ley, Miss Alice Crowley, Mr. and Mrs. Jehn Davis and Sterling. The greatest elegance characterized all the appoint ments and nothing was spared te make it the handsomest of the many banquets given by the Nevada millienaiie. The ladies' dresses were the richest and most elaborate. Mrs. Teller were a lilac satin and brocade trimmed with point lace, or naments of large diamonds ; Mrs. Chand ler, black brocaded moire and jet, with Duchess Iaco ; Mrs. Field,, black satin and lace : Mrs. Frelinghuysen, peach blos soms brocade and satin ; Mrs. Jenes, pale blue satin and brocade with necklace and ornaments of diamonds ; Mrs. Davis, white satin and brocade embroidered with pearl., full parure of diamonds ; Miss Sterling, pale bine satin and gres grain with lace trimmings ; Bliss Crowley, white brocade ; Miss Alice Cowley, blue satin and brocade. The new cable connecting Emden, Prur sia. with the Angle Ameiicau cable system at Yaleutia, and enabling messages te be transmitted directly between Germany and America, was opened Saturday. The first message sent was from the Empoier of Germany te President Arthnr, and was as fellows : "lam very happy te express te you, Mr. President, by the first direct telegraphic communication between Germany and America, my satisfaction en the comple tion of the work by which the friendly re lations between the two nations will be mere closely cemented." Iterating the Charges or Fraud. A pamphlet was issued recenlly written by Clarence Cook and published by Gas tenL. Feuardent, in which it was asserted that General Di Cesnela had been guilty of fraud iu relation te two statues in the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Ait, New Yeik. Other charges were made, but the main accusation, and the one en which great stress was laid, was that the well-known statue called "Aph rodite and Eres," and the figure holding a horned head, numbered 39 in the collec tion, were a fraudulent patchwork of un related parts. The trustees of the museum, in order te test tbe truth of these charges, invited the most thorough' examination of the two stataes referred te.
