LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER TUESDAY APRIL 18, 1882. t . I i- r THE TOBACCO MARKET. SEED LEAF AMD HAVANA. Fer the Week Ending Saturday, April IS, lO A. M. United States Tobacco Journal. A cloud of melancholy hovers ever our leaf market. Ne stir, no excitement, no buyers and even but few sellers. Not withstanding the dullness of trade ia leaf, ler the past few months stocks hare con tinued te get smaller and beautifully less ly degrees. A correct computation of the stocks of leaf tobacco in our market is Impossible, but a general estimate will hardly yield an exhibit of eyer 20,000 vases. Of tbese there are about 6,000 Uew Yerk state, 8,000 Pennsylvania, 3,000. Connecticut and 2,000 Ohie and Wiscon sin. Even if there should be a continu ation of comparative inactivity during the next three mouths the natural consump censump i ion will almost clear our market of old tobacco. Immediately upon the settlement of the tax and tenement-house cigar manufactur ing questions, the manufacturers of dears "will, it is safe te say, leap into a prosperity far greater than any records of the past nhew. lue stock of cigars en band all ever the country has dwindled down te very small proportions. The consumption of eijrars has and is increasing daily. Stocks of leaf in hands ei manufacturers are small also. Consequently the outlook for the leaf market is exceedingly bright, and packers of most of the '81 tobaccos are counting their unhatched chickens with admirable coolness. Nothing can nhake the expectations of packers of '81 Wisconsin that their stock will be in the lead and threw every manufacturer who merely glances at the samples into a state of absolute bewilderment, admiration and enthusiasm. Packers of '81 Pennsylvania arc seriously contemplating the widening of their store entrances, se as te avoid in juries te the lives and limbs of the manu facturers who they believe will rush upon them in crowds. There arc also packers of the '81 New Yerk state who cannot be lieve otherwise than that their stock is worth its weight in geld. Positive it is that all of these three crops contain a certain amount of leaf than which uone better ever was raised in this ceuntiy. Helders of '81 Connecticut pre sterve an air of indifference. They are sure of the talc of their stock whether business is geed or bad. Connecticut is Connecti cut, and as long as it has net tee great an amount of white veins and it is net tee light in color, its old patrons will take it, even if Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and state are wonderful iu all respects. Frem "pack ers of '81 Ohie, also, no great beasts are being heard. Perhaps their "Cinderella" will be queen this year. Who can tell ? The sales of leaf in our market during the past week were as fellows : New England Crep '81: 300 cases, mostly wrappers, 25 te 40 cents. Pennsylvania Crep '81 : 200 casep, wrappers, 30 te 35 cents. Ohie Crep '81 : 900 cases, partly for expert, 4 te 9$ cents. Hav-tua Market active. Sales 1,000 balc. ifailyall Remcdies. Prices lirm. Cans' Repert. Sales of seed leaf tobacco reported by J. S. Gans's Sen & Ce., tobacco brokers, Ne. 131 Water street, New Yerk, for the week ending April 17, 1882 : 918 cases 1880 Ohie fillers 4 te 4J, as as asserted 5J te 0J, wrappers 9 te 13; 200 cases 1880Pcnusylvania 0 te 25 ; 150 cases 1880 New England wrappers, 13 te 33; 100 cases 1S80 State, p. t. ; 150 cases 1880 Wisconsin, llavana aeed, 9 te 12$. Total, 1,518 cases. Tbe Lecal Market. The market has been very quiet for a week. The demand for low grade old to bacco continues, but there have net been many sales the whole probably aggre gating less than 200 cases, and these en private terms. Helders of old tobacco, 1 wuicu is getting scarce, appear te think thcre will be a rise in prices and refuse te cntcitain offers except they be very geed ones. They have also confidence that their purchases of new tobacco even at the prices paid, will turn out well, and this confidence is increased by the avidity with which mera tardy buyers are new picking up what is left of the crop of 1831. As yet nothing of any account has been done towards the preparation of the ground for the coming crop. Reports from the country are te the effect that though some seed beds were ruined by the late freeze, most of them escaped injury, being well protected by canvas or ether covering. A few farmers have plowed their ground, but most of them are wait ing for milder and mere favorable weather than has yet prevailed. m liil nlgcnt parents who allow their children le cat heartily of hlgh-seasened fned.rlch pies, cake &c, will liave te use Hep Bitters te pre pre Tent indigestion, sleepless nights, sickness, pain, and. perhaps, death.
