Shaeflfer. Mrs. Martha S. Shacffer, widow of the late Gen. Bartram A. Shadier, died at her residence en West Orange street at half past twelve o'clock te-day, after a linger ing illness, of consumption.' Though net unexpected. tne event will cast a gloom ever a. wide circle of friends and acquaint ances, te whom the many admirable traits of her character, her social and benevo lent (Imposition and the qualities that distinguish a true and noble woman woman woman heed had closely endeared her ; whilst the grief of her bereaved family is scarcely less poignant be cause of this final and inevitable result of sickness that has for se long confined her te a bed of pain and evoked the sympathy and selicitude of the large number who enjoyed the privilege of her acquaintance and companionship. The benevolent and charitable instincts of the deceased lady, whilst quiet and unostentatious, were alw.iys pronounced and gcuuiue, and the peer am! needy, the buffering and friend less, were never allowed te want where it lay in her power te aid them. The deeds of charity performed by her in a manner cutiicly devoid of parade or vain display aie the most enduring moments of a char acter beloved in life and honored in death. Mrs. Shacffer, who was a sister of the late Matthew and Jacob Strickler, leaves a family consisting of Mrs. Chsis. E. We hinted the ether day at the fact that two very dif ferent prices were current upon certain linens of the same qual ity, the higher prices being upon linens bearing the brand of well- known makers, and the lower prices being upon linens of the same quality, but bearing the brand of less well-known makers or bearing no brand at all, the maker's name beinp- withheld from the public. The fact exists precisely as we stated it. We illustrated it by two makes of underwear linen, betli of which we keep ; two makes se nearly alike that nobody but an expert can tell which is which ; but the expert can see that the unknown linen (the J W linen) is the better of the two, though it costs only two-thirds. The fact is a great deal bread er tnan we nave given an inti matien of. It is a general fact that celebrated makes of linen bring higher prices than equally geed linens of obscure or un known makes. It is a still mere general fact that celebrated makes of anything bring higher prices than obscure or unknown makes. Let us see just what this means. Yeu are willing te pay some thing for the guarantee of a great name ; and the less ) ou knew of the goods, the mere you are willing te pay for the guarantee. But experts in linen are few ; hence the linen maker's name has especial weight. New what does thegreat linen maker de ? Just what you or we would de in his place. He can't make a tenth enough, may be, te supply the demand for linens bearing his name. He gees into the market and buys the best raw linens he can buy ; bleaches them ; puts his brand en them, and sells them. Yeu buy them by the brand and pay his price. There is no trick. It is well known among makers and first hands what the brand means. Nobody heretofore probably has told you wnat it means. It means that that maker has approved the linen that bears his name ; has bleached it ; and by bleach ing it has put en it his peculiar finish. In ether words, when you trust the brand, you trust the maker as a buyer. The whole object of saying these things is this. We keep the famous brands of linens for these who want them. We buy, also, en the judgment of our linen-buyer, linens from maker0, no matter hew remote or un known ; and in this latter way we make our money go fifty per cent, farther; and you make yours go fifty per cent, farther by buying out of our stock en your own judgment. Fer will you see two linens, alike, side bv side : and pav a half mere for n hranrl ? Seme will ; and We are content some will net. either way.
