kANOASTER DAILY .INTELLIGENCER FRIDAY. APRIL 7, 1882. FAEM AJSD GAEDEN. SKASOSABLEANB 8KXS11ILK SUGGES TIONS. Tlmelv Hint for llutbandmen from ttie " Germantown Telegraph." The Yucca is one of our lately introduced and most beautiful flowering plants. It is quite hardy and is best propegated by separating from the original stock after being planted two or three years. The cost of them is reduced te fifty cents. A lady wrote te us the ether day, complain ing that hers would net flower, and asked us if they were ever barren. We were net able te answer, but told her that they never bloomed nntil the second year after planting, and that was, she said, answer enough, as she was rather in tee much of a hurry te see the flower. Hew te (let Earl Sweet Cem. Judge Miller, of Missouri, being en a visit soma time age, mentioned te us a fact discovered by himself, in which a full week cau be gained in getting sweet corn for boiling. He said that it was, as seen as the car is formed, break the top down or cut it off, but leave the stalk erect se that the pollen of the tassel will be sure te dust the silk of the cars, as they may net be fully impregnated should the stalk be topped. He stated that he had experi mented for years and was entirely satisfied that it was uniformly practical and of value. In fact, he thinks that the ear be comes mere fully developed also. This is a hint easy te adept, and may be of in terest te trackers ai well as for the private garden. Honeysuckles. We have many varieties of this always popular llewer. As a vine it has few or no superiors. The common monthlies, though at times very fine, de net generally well, and have given place te Japan vari eties, of which there arc several kinds. The most popular ene is the Shiuing leavcd, but they aic all mere or less ever green, as they retain some of their leaves until spring. They are very pretty upon a trellis, or they can be made te run up pests, porticos or piazza supports. They bloom mere or less throughout the season ami the flowers are very sweet. Then there is the large Trumpet Creeper, another variety of the honeysuckle, which may be carried ever a tree and makes a very attractive appearance. It is known by botanists as Begnenie radieans, and is the most attiactivc of all the creepers, the flowers being very showy and beauti ful. The plant is very hardy, no weather affecting it, aud when ouce carefully set out aud supported, will live for almost any length of tnue. We have thum growing where they have beeu standiug fei thirty years. Setting (lut Kvergrecr.s. Fer mere than thirty years wc have been giving advice in regard te the trans planting of evergreen trees ; and still the question is askcil us every season, spring and fall, hew it is te be done, many being uudur the impression that there is a secret in doing the work successfully. Instead of this being the case the fact is that there is no tree mere easily transplanted than the several varieties of evergreens. Of nil that we have set out, taken fiem a uuieiy, we de net remember that one has been lest. They should net be planted deeper than they naturally statd in the nursery. The roots should be care fully spread out aud the ground well pressed. They should be well staked, se that the high winds cannot disturb the roots, as there is nothing mere fatal te any newly-transplauted tree than this loosening of the roots. In selecting these tices in the nursery be sure te cheese these with one straight (net divided) main stem, with regular branches from the ground, and uninjured. Fer it must be understood that when an evergreen is a feet or two high it gets no new branches ; Isenee, if a tree is ragged at the bottom or has lest any of its branches when set out, they will always remain se. Belns Tere-Handed. Though most farmers and gardeners knew well the value of starting early in their war against weeds, the importance of the task is very apt te be forgotten in the hurry of spring work. Wc scarcely need ftive the advice, as advice, but a sug gestion is always encouraging, and the mere se'whcn we knew it te be true. The great trouble with most of us is that we layout tee much work for ourselves te de. We get a great many things half done, and work twice as hard as need be, wheu the same amount of labor judiciously ex pended would have a threefold result. This is just hew it is in the war against weeds. Wc are accustomed te get a "flurry" about getting in crops in time that wc forget the crop is already in and going en into the. weed at a rapid pace. We have net unfrequently seen tne greatest exertion in getting in seeds or plants that would have done just as well a week later, when the same time spent in harrowing or weeding ground, would have been equal te four times the time at a later period. These remarks of course apply mere te garden than te farm work. Where horse-power is at hand, weeds half an inch high, if annual wceds, are as easily destroyed by a broad-teethed cultivator, as if they were but just push ing through the ground ; but in gardcu work a simple raking of the ground when the seeds arc just sprouting is quite as effective as the best hoeing would be. An hour or two raking of a garden between the rows of the various crops will in fact almost render heciug unnecessary, and thus save many a hard day's work. Sitting Out Tender Plants. We shall seen arrive at the time when setting out tomatoes, egg-plants and ether vegetables will be in order ; and a word of caution against setting them out tee early will save many from disappointment. There is nothing gained by being first in the field in cases of this kind. The plants become stunted, and de net grew as fast as etheis put out later, and net until the ground is warm. These go right en with out stepping, and generally come into use before these which it was thought would beat them. It is worse than useless te set out plants or sew seeds until the ground is warm enough te cause them te gcrminate or grew. it is rather remarkable that this fact is net mere generally recognized than it is, as most farmers knew that it is true of corn. That which is put in very early often gets yellow and in ether wayE shows evidence or sickliness : and no one, unless in very high, dry warm around, ever thiuks te put in the com crop till all dan ger of a cold spell is ever. Yet in toma toes and egg-plants the error is frequently made, aud often by people who ought te knew better. Even ' new varieties " warranted te be " ten days," or some number of days earlier than some ethers already known, have been honestly set out because the introducers were ignorant of thissimple thing. Seme old-fashioned kind wc set out in the usual thoughtless, careless way, aud the "choice variety for experiment" re served, and after some days set alongside the ethers, and the result unmistakably showed that though; put out a week later, it ripened some days before the ether well-known kinds. What we have said may serve t'10 double purpose of preventing a tee early planting of these things, and a tee ready invest ment in extra early kinds. m m Neither Lawyer If or Soldier. N. Y. Times, Hep. The attorney general and the judge ad vocate general have been served with no tices te show catiRe before the United States supreme court en April 17, why a writ ' hiihitin rnritn .should net iMR iy the case of Sciguaut -Masen. This briugs into rather strong relief the absurdity of the position of Gen. Swaim, who, while publicly committed te the opinion that Masen has been wrongfully imprisoned, is expected te show en behalf of the govern ment that he eueht te be keet in orison. I The secretary of war, in his report te the president, takes issue witu tue judge ad vocate general, and Attorney General Brewster is also understood te be adverse te the somewhat novel views of military and civil law held by Gen. Swaim. It would seem te fellow that the personage who is supposed te be the official legal ad viser of the war department is decidedly out of place, and that during the further stages of the Masen case the only service he can render the government is te held his tongue. Had he been a little mere of a soldier he would probably have taken that course before ; had he been a little mere of a lawyer, any opinion he felt called en te deliver would net have been conspicuously silly. Slaymaker, Agent for ReigarlV Old Wine Stere, by a prominent practising phvsi cian et this county, who has extensively used the Brandy referred te in bis regular practice It Is commended te the attention ei ihee Af flicted with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Mimulum w.w never intended as a beverage, but te be iihcd as a medicine of great potency in the en re of some of the destructive discuses which sweep away their annual thousands of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the favorable notice et Invalids espe cially these afflicted with that miserable di. ea.se Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which 13 nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with lecble. appetite and mere 01 less debility, will find this simple- medicine, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their Ills and aclies. Be it, htev.:t strictly understood that we prescribe and u but ene article, and that Is REIGART'S OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young n-lemt, II E SLAYMAKER. Tills Brandy has steed tlie teat for years, and has never failed, as lar as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preference ever ull etner Biandies no matter with hew many jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth el the money that is yearly thrown away en various Impotent dyspepsia specifics would suffice tc buy all the Brandy te cure any such case 01 ases. In nroel of the curative powers of Rehjart's Old Brandy, in cases of Dyspepsia, we can summon nuin bcrs of witnesses one case in particular we cite: A hard-working farmer had been afMctea with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number of years; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con stantly no appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage lie used McUrann's Beet Beer, lie is a juctneuist, and then, as new S reached at times, and in his discourses often eclaimed earnestly against all kinds et strong drink. When advised te trv Belflrart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked up with astenismncnt but after hearing et its wonderful e fleets In the cases of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a sound man, with a stomach capable of digesting any thing which hejehese te cut. He still keeps it and uses a lit tie occasionally; and since lie lias this mcdl cine he has been of very little pecuniury bene fit te the doctor. A Practisikq Physicu ir. U. .
