LANCASTER DAILI INTELLIGENCJ5R FRIDAY. MARCH 3, 1882. Hancastcv nUrlUflatcet. FBIDAY VEKPJO, MABCH 3. 1882. REVISED FRUIT" LIST. Caerul HlnU Fer Practical Horticulturist. Fer many years we have regularly pub' lulled the annual revision by the German town Telegraph of its fruit list. Than this well-known journal there is no better horticultural authority. Its experienced and veteran editor has tried them all and knows whereof he speaks. He changes his choice very carefully and deliberately, but liis variations may be accepted as made for geed reason. In his last issue Majer Freas says : Since the last publication of our fruit list, we have ler. satisfactory reasons changed our opinion with respect te a few of the fruits which it contained. But in regard te the list as a whole we can see no just grounds for disturbing it Indeed, we de net see hew it can be improved for hi section of country, or as a general lifat for all the middle states. Seme of each of the separate selections may net de well upon one premises that will succeed ad mirably en another. Each giewer must find out for himself the particular apples, pears, &c, especially adapted te his soil and location. This can be easily clone by inquiries of these who are successful fruit fruit geowers, whose soil is somewhat similar te their own. According te our present preference, we should select the following for our own planting, and nearly all of which we are new growing mere or less succetsiuuy . Standard Pears 1. Gilferd ; 2. Doyenne d'Ete; 3. Early. Catharine ; 4. Kirtland ; 5. Bloodgood ; G. Summer Julienne ; 7. Tyson ; 8. Brandywine ; 9. Rarttett ; 10. Belle Lucrative ; 11. Manning's Elizabeth: 12. Scckel ; 13. Hewell ; 14. Anjou ; 15. Bhelden ; 1C. St. (Jhislau ; 17. Lawrence ; 18. Reading ; 19. Kieffer. Fer these who may desire si smaller number we should select ; 1. Giil'ard ; 2. Early Catharine ; 3. Bloodgood ; 4. Ty son ; 5. Bartlctt ; C. Hulle Lucrative ; 7. Scckel ; 8. Lawrence ; 9. Reading ; 10. Kieffer. They ripen in about the order they are arranged, except as te the three latter. The Lawrence, which begins te ripeu, or can be made te lipeii, early in November, will keep until Match, it being the only pear of our entire stock still in our fruit vault. In the abeve list, from Ne. 1 te 8 are summer varieties ; from 9 te 10 autumn (early and late), and 17, 18 and 19 winter, thuB affording a sufficient number for each of the periods of the best known sorts for this region. Dwarf Pears. 1. St. Michael d'Ar d'Ar change ; 2. Bartlctt ; 3. Cornice ; 1. Ros Res tiezer ; 5. Diel ; G. Tyson ; 7. Belle Lu crative ; 8. Lawrence ; 9. Ott ; 10. Louise Benne ; 11. Bosc ; 12. Bousseck ; 13. Gleut Merceau. Apples 1. Maiden's Blush ; 2. Bald win ; 3. Smokehouse ; 4. Northern Spy ; 5. Smith's Cider ; G. Fallawatcr ; 7. Cor Cer nell's Fancy ; 8. RmI Astrachan ; 9. Wag Wag oner ; 10. "Perter ; 11. Graveustein ; 12. Tempkiu's King ; 13. Roxbury Russet. We add te the foregoing list Tompkin's King and Roxbury Russet, both most ex cellent varieties : indeed the King is re garded by some as unsurpassed. Northern Spy is also restored. Peaches 1. Crawford's Early ; 2. Hale's Early ; 2. Troth's Early ; 4. Old Mixien ; 5. Crawford's Late ; 0. Ward's Late ; 7. Smock's Late ; 8. Admirable, late. We have substituted iu the peaeh list Troth's Eariy for Yerk's Early, and Ad mirable for Susquehanna. The former seems te have seen its best days, aud the latter is tee shy a bearer for profit. Grapes 1. Telegraph; 2. Concord; 3. Hartferd; 4. Clinten; 5. Salem G. Ro gers' Ne. 32 ; 7. Brighten ;',8. Prentiss. We have added te the .list Rogers' Ne. 32 which, should it maintain its present character, will be the very best out-deer variety cultivated. It is a beautiful piuk, or rather maroon, coleicd grape, and at times is transparent. It bears regular crops yearly with us. Clinten, in the foregoing list, is only for wine, and is probably the very best for that purpose. We add the Brighten, a maroon color, as premising well. It is, however, a small berry and rather btraggliug bunches, but almost pulplcss, aud of excellent quality. The Prentiss is also added. It is a new white grape, somewhat larger than the Delaware, of geed quality and scarcely a perceptible pulp. It premises te take the lead of all the white varieties. The branches are compact aud of large size. Cherries. 1. May Bigarreau ; 2. Belle de Choisy ; 3. Black Tartarian ; 4. Black Eagle ; e. Black Hawk ; G. Elten ; 7. Dewner's Lale ; 8. Early Richmond ; 9. Early Purple Guigue ; 10. Del. Bleeding Heart. Theiipcniugef the list will range from the earliest te the latest, thus carrying one through the whole cherry season. Ne one can go amiss in adopting this list. Raspberries. 1. Hernet ; 2. Hcrstine ; 3. Philadelphia ; 4. Brandywine. Strawberries. 1. Captain Jack; 2. Sclh Boyden ; 3. Sharplcss ; 4. Tiiomphe de Gaud. New kinds of strawberries arc con stantly appearing, but thus far we knew of no improvements en the foregoing. Currants 1. Black Naples; 2. Red Dutch; 3. White Grape. These three varieties arc the best among the different colors. The Red Dutch is a regular bear er aud is of better quality than any ether. There are ethers larger, but they are mere acid. The white grape is transparent of geed quality, aud ought te be mere gen erally grown, but it is net a great bearer, and it is net profitable for market. Gooseberries 1. Houghten ; 2. Down ing. These are the two best gooseberries grown in this country. They bear every year heavy crops, are free from mildew, and are of excellent quality. They are large cueugh for all practical purposes. We cannot recommend the giauts 'and their giant prices, and especially these of foreign origin. Blackberries 1. New Rechelle ; 2. Mis souri Cluster ; 3. Wilsen's Early ; 4. Sny der. The Snyder, a new Western Blackberry is highly spoken of at distant points, and from the very respectable endorsers which it has we have no doubt of its value, at least in Ihe West. We shall probably fruit it this year, having failed te de se last year. It is better that these who intend te cul tivate fiuit aud have te make purchases, te take this list with them te the nursery, and adhere te it as far as possible. Iu selecting fruit trees, or any ether, be careful te choeso theso with smooth, healthy-looking bark, have entirely shed their leaves, and have plenty of small fi brous roots. Trees ou which the leaves remain after frost sets in, aud sticks te the branches iu the spring, may be re garded as net healthy, and in some way lacking stamina. Killing a Convict. Rebert Tayler, a colored convict at the Maryland penitentiary, was shot and killed by James Byrne, a prison offlcer Tayler was employed in the foundry, and was told by the foreman te go en another fleer and make a casting in place of one 1 e destroyed. He paid no attention te the foreman, and when Byrne repeated the order Tayler replied that he would net go en the ether fleer and made an assault en Byrne, when the latter fired. Tayler grappled with the.efficer, and Mr. Therne, the foreman, seperated them. Tayler then ran for Therne, but the latter escaped and he returned te the assault upon Byrne, who fired two mere shots, at the last of which Tayler fell and died within an hour. A jury of inquest rendered Terdiet that the killing waft in self-defence. Tayler was a powerful man and at times very difficult te manage. Lady Beautiners. It is commended te the attention of these al flictcd with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was never intended as a beverage, but te be lifted as a medicine of great potency in the euro of seme of the destructive diseases which Bweep away their annual thousands of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the favorable notice el invalids espe cially these alllictcd with that miserable dis ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which i3 nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with leeble appetite and mere or U-?-s debility, will find this simple medicine, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their Ills and aches. Re it, hewevet r-irictly understood that we prescribe and usf bi'.t oue article, anil that Is REIGART'S OLD BRANDY, StiM bv our enterprising young Irlend, II B SLAYMAKER. This Erandy has steed the test for years, and has never failed, as lar as our experience extends, and we thcrefert give it the preierenee ever all etner Brandies no matter with hew many jaw-brcakingFrench titles they are branded. One-fourth et the money that Is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would suffice te buy all the Rrandy te euro any such case ei uses. In proet of the curative powers el Beigart's Old Brandy, In cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon nuu here of witnesses-rone ease In particular we cite: A hard-working fanner had been athlcteu with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number of years; his stomach would reject almost every kind of fQOd; he had sour eructatiens con cen Etantly ue appetite in tact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage he used McUrann's Reet Ueer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new preached at times, and in his discourses etten declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advised te trv Reisrart's Old Brandy, In his case, no looked up with astonishment but after hearing et its wonderful ellects in the cases ofseme of his near acquaintances, he at laat consented te lollew our advice. He used the Erandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a geund mau, wlth a stomach capable of digesting any thing which hejehose te eat. He still keens it and utes a lit tle occasionally ; and since he 1ms this uicdl cine he has been of very little pecuniary bene, lit te the doctor. A Practising Piitsxcia k. H. E.
