The recent exhibition of silk cocoons aud fabrics at St. Geerge's hall wasiutcresting as showing Ihepieirress we are making in this branch el manufactures aud in recall ing the excitement that laged in Pennsyl vania many yeats age, when farmers in Lancaster county, especially, devoted acres of ground te the growth of the mulberry r worn iHiiliicu'ilis, and where fortunes weic lest iu lruitless experiments. The utmost cue is requisite te insure sue cess; the habits of the sikwenns must be vigilantly studied, and their wants an ticipated. I knew of 0110 instance where the labor of years, was destroyed in one single night by a failure te cloae the slats in the windows of a coceonery which had been left open for ventilation en a warm summer evening, and thousands of worms which were just, beginning te spin were C3iigealed by the blasts of a neithcastcrly storm. One of the mjst peisistcnt of the recent growers, however, and also one of the most successful, is a farmer from Lan caster county, named Summy, who re sides iu Mauhcini township, aud who brought large aud small o!d-lashiencd hair trunks te St. Geerge's hall filled with cocoons of the l'mest description, his own growth. Mr. Summy has a great many mulberry trees, collected fiem the ad joining farms and gratuitously received "fiem disgusted grewcis many years age, aud the leaves of the mu!bcrry, mixcd with these of the Osage orange, whbh flourish! s se luxuriantly in our climate, aud is new se valuable for hedges, produce a much stronger and firmer texture than when the first-named is alone employed. The fact that Osage orange aleua will suf fice for feed has given a new impetus te this industry, and the time may net be far distaut when the purely American silks, which have -.-heady attained .1 most enviable icputatien, will outrival the pro duction of foreign looms and render us entirely independent of our transatlantic cousins, for what has always been regarded - - an article of luxury. Al though the court in Philadelphia had con tinued the Minnich case en account of his engagements here, after an effort te pre juic they fiud that they have net sufficient time (their client being in jail) te get itady for the Miller trial by next week.
