LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER SATURDAY. FEBRUARY IS, 1882. Hancastct liitclUaencer. SATURDAY EVENING, FEB. 18, 1882. Unexpected Abolitionists. In Literary Xeter, an interesting Loek by A. P. Russell, we find this curious para graph : "It has been remarked as an in teresting fact that Wilberforce at the age of twenty-five and Wendell Phillips at the same age were two persons who seemed the least likely of all their respective con temporaries te become world-renowned as advocates of the causa of anti-slavery. Wilborferco was returned te Parliament at twenty-one, when, according te his biog rapher, 'he became the idol erthc fashion able world, dancing at Ahnaclc'.s, and sing ing before the Prince of Wales.' At twenty-five ha abandoned his gaycties, en tered upon a new life, and took up the great cause which he advocated during the remainder of his long career. Wendell Phillips at the age of twenty two was a Bosten lawyer, aristocratic, wealthy, handsome, polished and sought alter; col onel of a city militia company, and a lever of blooded horses, of fencing and boxing. He was born en Beacon street and his father was one of the most popular niayeis Bosten ever had. At Harvard university where he graduated, he was president of the "exclusive .society" known as the Gentlemen's Club, and in fact he was the leader of the aristocratic party among the students. Atxwcnty-Ure he abandoned his practice of law, gave up the fashion able world, and espoused the cause of t! e slave." The Uorcraer of .Missouri. There is a story in currency at Jcller.-t:i Me., that en line days the governor gees down te the depot about train time carry ing his overcoat en his arm, with his left baud inserted in the breast of his Prince Albert, and stauds statuesqucly en the platform looking like a combination of Themas II. Benten and the angel Ga briel. As the train gees by the passengers all inquire: "Who is that icmarkably lino-loeking gentleman with the buuigiiaut counten ance and yet haughty air?' And the chorus of brakemen, train boys conductors and firemen reply, "That, why that is the governor of the .state, isn't he stately?" After the train passes his excellency put en his overcoat, rings down the curtain, gets oil' his pa.lestal. and gees back te the capitol te commune with Mr. Farr, having afforded his loyal citizens of Missouri an exhibition of manly beauty for which posi tively no charge for admission was made. (cltlug Suuare. In the early days of Dr. Bellows an inci dent occurred which he used te relate with glee. At the close of a lecture in a small town in New Hampshire, he had returned te the village tavern, and was warming himself at the tire before retiring for the night, when a farmer came in, and intro ducing himself, stated that he had attend ed his lecture with great instruction ami delight, and in closing said : " I have get mere than my money's worth. Please ac cept this, as I new want te pay you up,' at the same time presenting a silver dol lar. Like a sensible man, Dr. Bellows avoided any hurt te the feelings of his generous hearted visitor by accepting the gift. 'MIK .SKAMOM OK LENT. Rules te !. OIjt.hi i-il During U:iU I'eriud.
