I LANCASTER DAILY LNT1MIJUEN0ER. SATURDAY DECEMBER 10, 1881. Haurastff fntel&gencrr. SATURDAY EVENING, DEC. 10, 1881. A New Source of Glacese. A Company Forming te Produce It JTrem Cassava. A Philadelphia, company is being formed by a number of capitalists te make glucose from cassava, a tuber which grows luxu riantly in the southern part of the United States. Glucose has become a very im portant article of commerce during the past few years, and the consumption of it has reached 200,000 tdns in this country alone, and a large quantity is imported. It has been made heretofore from corn, which has advanced se much this year as te make this much-needed article quite ex pensive. The demand for it is very large and exceeds the supply. Heretofore the preBts of manufacturing it have been very great, at the rates paid for corn dur ing the past few years. During the trial of a recent lawsuit in New i erk it came out in evidence that the Buffalo grape sugar company sold te one agency $100, 000 worth of grape sugar or glucose per month. That company is new using nearly 6,000 bushels of corn every day in the week. A bushel of corn, weighing 5G pounds, wilLyield 30 pounds of sugar or glucose. The average net profit en a bushel of corn is between 40 and 50 cents. The pespectus of the company new being formed te make glucose gives some com parisons as te the cost of raising corn and cassava. The average production of corn in the states of Pennsylvania, New Yerk, Ohie, Michigan and Illinois is 35 bushels te the acre. The amount of glucose pro duced from one bushel is 30 pounds, or 1,050 pounds te the acre. Well-authenticated evidence is at hand te the effect that 20 tens of cassava te the aero is no un usual crop in Flerida. This, at 50 pounds te the bushel, would give a yield of ever 700 bushels per acre, or at the rate of 30 pounds of elucose per bushel, would pre duce ever 21,000 peuuds of glucose per acre. A comparison of the yield of glu cose from corn and cassava shows that 1,000 acres of corn yields about 500 tens of glucose ; 1,000 acres of cassava yields about 10,000 tens of glucose. A Clergyman's Odd mistake. HoHten Herald. The Presbyterian church in Walpole was the scene of a very amusing incident last Sunday. It appears that the pastor, the Rev. Fiank S. Uamblelt, upon enter ing his pulpit te proceed with Divine ser vice, was astonished te find a clerical-looking stranger occupying the same, and his manuscript spread out upon the desk. The pastor quietly inquired of the stranger his mission, te which he replied that it "was all right." Supposing he had some cranky individual te deal with whom it would be judicious te handle with care, he asked, in tremu!eus tones, whether the gentleman intended te preach, te which the stranger replied that such was his in tention. Casting an appealing glance for protection te the deacons in the front pews. Mr. llamblctt ventured te say that he was unaware of hating invited any one te preach for him. The stranger in blank astonishment .stated that he had conic, as Mr. Marsh could nut he en hand. This solved the mystery, and the pastor informed the stranger that his eolaberer, Mr. Marsh intended te preach in the Orthodox church near by. The sudden exit of the gentle man followed this explanation, and in het haste he proceeded te the Orthodox church, teliml all there iu a statojef great anxiety, the organist, having played the prelude through thrce times, and the worthy deacons were en the point of tak ing up the collection and then dismiss the audience. At this juncture the clergyman rushed in, mounted the pulpit, and with the per spiration streaming from his face requested the congregation te sing, " Nearer, My Ged, te Tlice," and the service proceeded. Experiments in a Human stomach. Dr. Mikulicz, of Vienna, has invented an instrument for illuminating and in specting the inside of the living stomach. On the 5th inst. he exhibited his apparatus upon which he has bestowed the title of " Gastroscepc," te the leading professeis of the medical faculty at the Pelyklinik, and performed some interesting experi ments with it upon a fomale hospital patient suffering from chronic dyspepsia. It consists of a tube, fitted with a set of minute but pewci fill rcllccters at one end, and connected at the ether with au electric battery, by which a brilliant light is pre jected into the stomach requiring inspec tien, lhis tube was passed down the subject's threat and remained there for full 20 minutes, during which time the Yicnuese professeis were- enabled te diag nose the condition of every part of the mucous membrane thus lighted up and revealed te their gaze. Thejgastroscepo is considered likely te render invaluable services te the cause of clectro-cndescopic investigation, which for some time past has In en prosecuted with ardor by emi nent Austrian pathologists. Several in genious contrivances for examining the interior of the body have been invented within tle last few years. They aie all. it appears, very costly, and Baren Nathaniel de I'ethschild, with characteristic gener osity, has presented a cemplete tctef electro endoscepic instruments te the Pelyklinik, by aid of which that institu tion has already placed en record a long series of important aud highly instructive obseivatieus respecting the phenomena of intcinal diseases.
