LANCASTER DAILY JLVJLELLTGENCER WEDNESDAY; DECEMBER 7. 1881. ilaucasict iiUclUgenrcr. WEDNESDAY EVENING, DEC. 7, 1881. THE LATEST SEWS. MEDICAL. Will! HISTORIC OF A SUCOESSFULBUSINESS FKOM STATE AND NATION. Jeff. Davis is a passenger en one of ttae European steamers new ovcrdue at New Yerk. Rev. Dr. Camp, for many years presi dent of the Baptist college at '.Welfvillc, Neva Scotia, died yesterday. Twe trains collided at Halesville, Texas, before daylight, killing three men and in juring several ethers. Twe men, supposed te have been section hands, were killed by a train near Lake Elme, Minnesota, William Allen, who killed William S. Sclatcr, was taken from the jail at War wick Court Heuse. Va., by a party of masked men and hanged. Three boys were crushed te death by falling debris while playing in the base ment of a Sunday school building in St. Jehn, New Brunswick, awhich had been damaged by fiie. At a meeting of the stockholders of the New Yerk & New England railroad, lipid vesterdav in Bosten, the Jay Gould nartv were elected directors by a vote of about 94,000 out of 9G.000 shares. By the explosion of a puddle furnace at the Pottsville iron and steel company's Fishback rolling mill William Musket, puddler, and William Warflcld, helper, were severely, if net fatally, burned. The two men were working at the furnace and made a narrow escape from instant death. The body of a man genteelly dressed, was found floating in the river below Rich mond. In the pocket of his clothing were two envelopes bearing the stamp of the Pittblmreh & Western railroad, one of which was addressed te J. E. Fmke. 1 he drowned man was about fifty years of age. The much-talkcd-er Doblcr-Rewell walking match in Chicago proved a com plete failure. At 12:40 o'clock, when Rewoll had completed 23 miles, Debler claimed te be considerably hurt by an en counter with a druuken fellow and left the track. He did net return, and Rewcll was declared winner at 1:47 after makiug 35 miles. The jury in the suit of Ida Oman against llenry Meyer, of Richmond, Va., for 825,U00 damages ler ereacii ei premise of marriage, brought in the United States c'u-cuit court, New Yerk, banded in a ver dict giving the plaintiff $1,750 damages. Counsel for the defendant applied for a new trial, and a stay of thirty days was given. Anether infernal machine has been found in Montreal at the court house. It had pone off, but apparently without doing any injury. The lads who brought it te the police station say it was lying beside the first machine found by them when they removed the latter, but a man who was present told them net te disturb it. Wm Ncal, colored, charged with brute outrage, has been acquitted in Wilming ton. The jury steed 11 for conviction and 1 for acquittal. As the judge had con vinced the iury that they would be con fined until a verdict should be reached, even if it took a year, the eleven gave into the ene stubborn man. Ncal was con victed of the crime last May aud sentenced te be hanged. The verdict was overruled by the United States supreme court en the ground that no colored men were al lowed te serve en Delaware juries and a second trial was ordered There has been great indignation ever the result of the trial and many threats of lynching were hcaid.
