LANCASTER DAILy IJfrfcfJJQBNCBB. THURSDAY, DECEMBER I. 1881. Lancaster ntclltsenrer. THURSDAY EVENING. DEC. 1, 1881. Farm -Veles. Useful Hints for the Telling Uusbaudinan. The distinguished French chemist and investigator 31. Leuis Pasteur, has dis covered a novel means of treating sheep for the eradication of a most malignant and dchlructive class of diseases, devastat ing whole flecks and variously called fiplcnic fever, "anthrax," 'charben" and caibuncular disease. He takes the virus of the disease, and, and, after pass it through certain processes, se as te re duce its rancor, or in ether words, te get it into "mild" form, he "vaccinates" with this mild virus the animals sheep or horned cattle- that are te be protected. That his process will and docs protect the "vaccinated" animals, he has demon strated en a large scale, at the invitation of ene of the French Agricultural socie tics. Fifty bheep, without distinction, were inoculated with the strongest charben virus, and M. Pasteur predicted that, en the following day, the twenty-iive bheep inoculated for the lint time would all he dead, while these protected by previous " vaccination " with the mild virus would be perfectly free from even slight indisposition. A large assemblage of agricultural authoii autheii tics, cavalry eiliccrs, and veterinary sur geons having met at the field the next afternoon, the result icaa found te be exactly in accordance with M. Pasteur's predictions. At two o'clock twenty-three of the " un protected " sheep were dead ; the lirenty lirenty feurlU died within another hour, and the liccntyfifth an hour afterward. But the twenty-live " vaccinated sheep ware all in perfectly geed condition ; ene of them, which had been designedly inoculated with an extra dose of the poison, having been slightly indisposed ler a few hours, but having then recovered. The Germantown Telegraph diiects at tention te the urgent need of attendiug carefully te the requirements of stock new that they have te be ceniincd. One of the most important of these is a fre quent supply of salt. -Mankind as a rule docs net partake of a single meal without having it liberally seasoned with this im portant natural product. The craving of animals is of a similar natuie. The hei.se, particularly, relishes this nutritious sea soning ; and te the hog it can be ;ivcn in its feed in inci cased quantities with bene ficial lcsulls. The sheep being a smaller feeder icnuhcs a larger quantity than swine. Salt in its puic state is fatal te poultry, but when mixed te a small extent with their feed has an excellent ell'ect. New is the time te give geed heed te the accumulation of manure. Trash of all kinds and leaves may be gatheied up and hauled into the barnyaul te be ceuveited iute manure by spring. Leaves from the weeds arc probably the best, and new is the time te haul them in. After a rain or a light fall of snow is pcihaps the best time te go for them. They then aic a little moist and lay compactly together, and two or three times the quantity can be taken in a lead. An old fashioned wooden rake is very handy in heaping the leaves, se as te be taken up by an expand ing wooden straw feik. liy having the " small boy " te trample down the leaves, a great many can be taken in a lead. The hog icn should be liberally supplied with them ; se the cow stable, and when theie is an abundance of leaves, the dung yaul can have lcpcatcd supplies scattered ever it. Walcriiu; .Stuck. Animals of all kinds should be allowed an opportunity te obtain water at leasi twice every day in winter. All animals, men included, desiie less water in cold than iu warm weather, but when all the feed is dry a ceusideiable amount of water is requited te moisten it and te supply the demands of the system for fluids. All persons knew the injuiieus elfccls of drinking a huge quanity of water at a tunc. 11 is as injurious te the inferior an imals as te men. Water obtained from any ether semce than a spring will be necessarily quite cold in the winter, but it need net be cold as ice and snow will make it. The watering trough should be emptied alter all the stock have drank, se that no ice will form iu it. Pains should also be taken te draw oil' the water iu such a manner thai it wiU net feim ice en the ground where the stock will stand te drink. It is always desirable te have the watering place located under cover, and thus pro tected from the winds and storms. It is best te have the space around it ceveicd with plank that can be kept clear of ice and snow. Many dairymen and horsemen have found gicat advantage iu bringing water into their barns and stabkajfer use during the winter season. Thisway gen erally be done without great trouble or expense when spring water can be obtained ami conveyed through pipes. The water is comparatively warm and supply can be had by simply turning a stopcock. The cattle and horses can be turned out te driuk ene at a time, and allowed te return te their stalls when they are done drink ing. By this airangcmcut the animals can obtain water without being exposed te the cold, and without being subjected te the danger of being hooked, pushed about or of slipping en the ice. Animals watcicd under cover during severely cold weather aic net likely te contract colds or te suffer from diseases of the threat and lungs. If stock is let out into au open yard te driuk during cold weather, only a small number should be turned out at once, se that the opportunity for quar reling may be obviated as far as possi ble.
