Lauie-, iu court The Dcfeuduiit Thicateucd With Keuiovel. Washington, -Nev. lb. luere was a large crowd, including several hundred ladies iu court te-day. At nine o'clock the prison van drove up and Guiteau, clutching a Luge bundle of papers ia bis manacled bands, sbullled hurriedly into the building. The by-standcis were re markably quiet, yet Guiteau plainly be trayed fear of violence. When the court epenened four-fifths of the seats weie oc cupied by ladies. Sceville at once arese te make a per sonal explanation and asked the court te adept some measmes te prevent the pris oner from giving te the public his unau thorized statements aud also te prevent his annoying interruptions iu court. This at ecc? brought en a scene, during which Guiteau demanded that Sceville should go out of the- case, that he was no crimi nal lawyer and had no sense ; that he talked one thing in public and another in private. Sceville endeavored te explaiu te the court, but the prisoner became mera excited, addressing himself te the court, his counsel and the bailills indiscrimin ately. While denouncing Sceville, he turned le the officers who were trying te keep him quiet, and said : ' Yeu mind your own business, you confounded feels, you ain't get no sense." When the court again threatened in decided terms te remove him and go en with the tiial without him, he replied : " I don't care if you de, the ceutt in banc will revcise tit and I will get a new trial you have no right te re move me." The judge then icitcratcd his threat, aud after whispering te his coun sel Guiteau subsided and devoted himself te his papers. The examination of wit nesses then commenced. A number of witnesse:; then testified te the sheeting, during which time Guiteau seemed absorbed in his papers. One wit ncss, a woman, said at the time of the sheeting Guitcau looked pale, like one about te visit the graves of dead friends. At this he glanced quickly at witness and allowed a faint smile te linger for an in stant about bis Guitcan-pcrcha lips. When another witness testified as te hew Guiteau were his hat, the prisoner put it en and remarked, " they are all mistaken en that hat business. This is the way 1 1 were my bat." Later en the pistol with which the f.ih'.I ball was fired was shown incidence. Then there was a general craning of nrcks in j every part et tneroem witti tin: wiiis-pjrcd exclamation, "There is the weapon that killed peer Gaiiield ;" it was handed around among the jury and attention call ed te the fact that two barrels v,c;e empty aud four still leaded. Anether witness testified that Guiteau bad a bad face, a remark which Sceville wanted struck from the record unless wit ness stated specifically what feature was bad. Finally Sceville asked him if he had expressed any opinion en the case, te which he replied he had. fj Sceville "Have you ever s.iid you thought prisoner ought te be hung ? " Witness (in a most emphatic niannei) " I have most decidedly. " Anether witness, Patrick Kearney a policeman, swore he was the first te arie t Guiteau. He caused much amusement by detailing his first impulse te club the prisoner and the quaint expres sions and emphatic manner in which he contradicted the witness Parke, who yesterday swore he was first te arrest Guiteau. "Ne else se help 111c Ged." he said, "took held of him ; I was all alone." Guiteau, who had following this man's evidcucc closely said, "Your honor, will you allow mc te ask this witness a few questions ? He comes nearer te the truth than any of them." Guiteau then cor roborated the story of witness that the latter was the first te make the arrest ami witness in turn admitted that Guiteau did net attempt te escape. At 12:20 cunt took a recess for half an hour. K.1IAI.I.-POX IN THK FAR Wl.ST A Teitii Cut Oil' Frem Travel. PeitTMND (Oregon).; Xev. 18.
