"F. G. " in Country Gentleman. The present season bas been an excellent one for testing potatoes having been het and dry, jnst the reverse of -what is con cen ceeded te be the demand of this crap. The usual shallow planting two or three inches deep, thus, exposing the tuber te heat of the sun and dreuth has proved te be a failure. That which always happens in shallow planting, and especially in a het season like this, is that a large proportion of tubers protrude through the soil and are spoiled by the sun. These appear in market herein greaterfpropertion this year than usual. They are of conrse worthless and unhealthy. The rest lack in quality, and will deteriorate mere and mere with age ; ret and the effect of the sun co oper ating. Few sorts, if any, are exempt. It is in a moist season, which is also a cool one, that the potato docs best, increasing the size aud number of its specimens. Are we then te depend upon such seasons alone for success ? If se, the chances are against us, as dreuth and heat predominate ; and our faulty treatment puts us at the mercy of the seasons. It is for this reason mere than any that potatoes as a crop arc se fluctuating. They de net yield what they should, and the quality is far from being what it ought te be, aside' irem the ret. In slieit, the potato is disappointing, being largely raised, from necessity, for home use. There have some geed potatoes been ci own the present season, which were from early planting of early sorts. They cscarel tlie heat aud dry weather later en. It is always well te plant early, as early as possible ia our climate, en well prepared soil having geed drainage, whether early or late sorts. Properly managed and at tended te. the chances arc for mere meis ture and moie coelness: and, for safety agaiusfthc fiest aud dry weather of spring, put well down in the mellow soil at least six inches deep, and deeper in sandy loam. This will prevent the seed however small, from drying out. and sprouting will go en thcre instead of in the cellar, the tips appearing when the danger from frost is ever, and at the time potatoes are usually planted, thus get ting a start of weeks, and maturing the crop early, about the middle or latter part of June, bcfeic dreuth has pen etrated deeply. By tiiis time the late sorts will be well established, occupy ing with their roots and young tubers the lower, cooler soil weeks in advance of the usual planting, audiipcning se much the earlier, thus avoiding dreuth and frost, which often make serious work with be lated potatoes. Deep planting requires deep working and enrichment of the soil se as te have the seed in rich, mellow ground, net dropped en the bottom of the furrow en the hard, raw subsoil, and cov ered with the plow, as is often done. The roots wants te penetrate downward as well as Literally. This puts them beyond the reach of even as severe dreuth as the one just past. If, in addition, the surface of the soil is kept stirred se as te form a fine mulch, a superior crop is assured every season, if the soil has geed drainage se as te cany off the water in a wet season. I havu net been growing potatoes of late years, but as se much was said about the deterioration of the Early Rese, and as the market seemed te confirm ir, I planted some the past spring as a test. The soil, au old sod, was prepared last fall, and an early working given in the spring when the planting was done. Selecting the soundest seed I could find, I planted some in the usual way, covering 2 or 3 inches deep, ethers C and 8 inches. The first were a failure a few small potatoes in a hill aud a peer quality. This agreed with the general crop of the ncighboiheod. It was a matter of gratification and te the neighbor.'; a .surprise te see the fine, bright tubers that came up when the deep planted weic dug which was the middle of June these covered six inches ripening earlier, as they also came up car lier after planting. They were clcau and sound, and when cooked were white, meaty and sweet, with no rank unhealthy odor. The objection te deep planting, that it is mere expensive te harvest the crop, holds geed se for as tlic digging concerned, but it is in no way an eltsct te the ether advantages of a. longer, sounder and mere uniform crop, take one season with an ether, drought having much less effect. The gi cater freedom disease, which re sults is a point that can hardly be evcies timated in view of the wide spicad, un sound condition of the tubers, ler there is less chance for ret with deep planting in weli-diaincu soil, the tubers being farther down and belter protected at least there is greater success. Se much I can say for the Early Itese from my own experience. Grewn iu the way described, dug as seen as ripe, and stored in a cool, dry place, they will keep sound aud sweet during the summer aud through the following winter, comparing favorably in the spring with the late seits. Care must be taken when dug aud put away te keep the cellar cool and net tee dry, by kcepiug the windows open in cool Weather, usually cveniugs, and shut when warm, double windows being a better pro tection against heat. This is the way a cellar should be kept, net only for pota toes or fi uit, but for all purposes. Never dig potatoes under a scorching sun. As seen as dry take te the cellar, handle care fully, 1 eject all hacked, bruised or imper fect ones, and put in barrels or bins, and close. Wc aie tee rough and careless with our potatoes.
