FRIDAY KVKNINa, SKPT. 0. 1881. FARM AND GARDEN. USEFUL HINTS FROM OEBMANIOWN TfcLECKArU. Collecting Fall Wute. Many persons feel the want of manure, and indeed there are few who have mere than tbey can use. Where it is scarce, the first thought is te buy, and often this is the 'best plan ; but in many cases one might make considerably by a little care for articles which usually go te waste. We knew that there arc many things recommended that are of little account ; things .which involve hard labor and yt realize but little in the end. Such are often found in the various schemes for making manure out of tan-bark, saw-dust, swamp-muck, aud se forth, which once in a while and nnder peculiar circumstances may pay for themselves, but are as a gen eral thing little mere than time thrown away. But it is always a geed thing te keep all parts el one's place in a neat and nice condition, and the material gathered to gether iu this way into the compost heap will generally p.iy for itself. However careful may ha a farmer or gardener te keep things clean, there will often be odd corners that will be left by the pressure of work te grew up te cear.se vegetation. If this be cut when leisure time comes it will generally pay in the compost heap. At this season of the year, especially, there is often a great quantity of vegetable refuse of one sort or another lying about. It will pay te collect it ; and especially is this true of leaves when they arc in any gicat quantity and net faraway. We have known persons with pietty geed judgmi-ut te hesitate about taking a second ciep from a piece of grass-land iu net very geed condition because they thought it would be running the ground tee liar d te de se. They say it is best te leave the vegetation en the ground te let. This all very well if it did ret ; but little of it does. It mostly dries up, and the best matter is lest. It would pay much better te mew and put into the barnyard or compost heap, and then return in the sliapa of top dressing aft ci wauls. The extra labor in a case like this pays very well. Above all is it a geed th'mg for these who have no liorse or cow no barnyard te save the little waste material for a com post heap. Every garden might have one in some by-place, net exposed te view. It is an inducement te have a clean place, and then there's profit iu it. Keeping Apples. It is well, perhaps, te touch upon this subject, as the tViiue is approaching when we must prepare room te store the winter apples. In this, as iu almost everything else, people! differ as te the best method of keeping apples through the winter as well as into t-priug. In fact they are frequent ly kept until June, with the flavor very little impaired. Of course the utmost caie must be taken iu gathering them from the trees, then soiling them and putting them lightly into dry Heur casks. The barrel should be heaped somewhat, aud the head ing pressed down firmly, being careful net tojurnise them. These casks should be left under a dry, open shed until as far into November as the fiest will admit of. Light freezing weather will net harm the fruit ; in fact it is only when there is dan ger of freezing that it should be removed. The barrels should then be taken into a tireless room where there will be no dau ger of freezing ; or, which wc would much prefer, a cold, dry cellar. When carefully disposed of in this way, there is little risk of apples becoming unsound throughout the winter and spring, provided they are of a fair keeping variety, such as Smith's Cider, the Cartheuse, the Iialdwiu, the Rhede Islaud Greening, the Spitzenburg, the Northern Spy, &c. It must be remembered, however, that a barrel, say of Baldwins, from one tree aud one locality will net perhaps keep as well as a barrel from some ether. It may be from some peculiarity of the soil, though perhaps as likely te be from seme consti tutional defect in the tree. One thing is well ascertained, that fruit from au old and worn out tree will net keep as well as fruit fiein the same variety of which there may be but a moderate quantity en the tree. It seems, therefore, that fine large healthy-looking fruit of any one kind should have the preference as long keep ers. If these precautieus are taken the apple is net hard te keep. Most fail from keep ing them tee warm. The usual store room of the house, where they are gener ally put, is net the best place for them. They need te be kept as cool as possible. Indeed, as we have already said, a little frost docs net hurt them, provided this low temperature is regular. A frequent chaugc from cold te worm is fatal te the keeping quality of any fruit, much less the apple. If any of the thousands of farmers aud fruit-growers who read this paper have any views, or better views, te advance en this subject, we shall be glad te hear from them. Jtaw anil Advanced Creps. It is estimated that the annual produc tion of wines in France amount te $330, 000,000, from five millions of acres planted with grape vines, which is nearly twice the value we derive from the entire wheat crop of the United States in average sea sons. The reason of this difference is that the French grape crop is manufactured into its most advanced product wine ready for use while the immense propor tions of our wheat crop is exported in bulk, net even manufactured into flour ; and se eager and sheit-sighttd arc we iu our haste te ship this crop that we invest millions of dollars iu great railroads, grain elevators, marginal facil ities 'for expert, piers, decks aud steam ships, leaving the most of the profits te the foreigners who manufacture this grain into flour and who sell the flour te consumers. It would be as sensible te cxpeit iron ere iute England aud bring back the m u.u'acturcd pig iron. Fer the grain we ship te Euglaud comes back te us iu the shape of hardware, dry poeds, rails and fancy articles of every kiud. Our importations of lercigu wiues arc se large that it is worthy te note that California alone has 8,000,000 acres of land adapted te the culture of the grape vine, being three millions mere than the grape culture covers in France ; but at the pres ent time she has net much mere than 50,000 acres se planted ; the greater part of her agriculture being devoted te raising wheat for expert in bulk te England by the long and perilous voyage around Cape Hern. Se little profit is made in raising grain for cxpeit in bulk, that it is net surprising te find the farmers in California and in the Nertlnve.-t turning their attention toether pursuits. Thus iu California the crane culture and the manufacture of wine, the raising of sugar beat and the making sugar therefrem, the rearing of cattle aud the expert of hides aud beef, and the cult uic of the orange, the lemon, the IU, and ether tropical fruits, are all making headway ; while in the Northwest butter and cheese fac tories are rapidly multiplying, wool flourishes, cattle and flax receive iucreased attention, and some of the vast grain farms are breaking up into vegetable or truck gardens. Iu fact the primitive forms of agriculture yield sufficient profit. The crops require te be put through the advanced processes before' the money value begins te tell. Nothing could show mere forcibly than the amazing contrast between the value of the French wine I crop and that of the American wheat crop Of the two the latter is inherently by far the mere valuable ; and yet we de net make it se simply because we expert the grain in bulk iustead of putting it into mere advanced products. An American Hetel in Londen. The latest American innovation across the water is te be the erection of a hotel iu Londen by Mr. Austin Cerbinand ether wealthy New lerk capitalists, te ne con ducted en the American plan. The prop erty which the capitalists are seeking te lease for a long term, is thatef the Thames embankment, below. Westminster Bridge, aud convenient te the house of Parliament. It is said that sufficient money has been subscribed with which te build the largest and handsomest hotel in the world. An American hotel palace, conducted en the Ameiican plan, would astonish the aver age Englishman.
