- LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCES THUBSBAT, AUGUST 18, 1881. Lancaster intelligence. THURSDAY XVKNINa, AUG. 18, 1861. FARM AND GARDEN. TIMELY BINTS FOB HUSBANDMEN. Of Value te Tnoae Who Till the Seli. Germantown Telegraph. Ninety-five per cent, of the product of American agriculture is cumuumm home. . i?TtwrienRfifl agriculturists find profit m Mf of inn and varietv of crops. A little of many beats of one. Ge through and pick the small and knotty fruit and enough ethers te keep the trees from overbearing. It will make the remainder larger and of hotter quality and will measure about as much as though all were left en the trees ; and the health of the trre requires it. A tree seldom bears an overburdened crop two years in succession. Fer apple butter, take thirty gallons of sweet cider, that just from the press is te be preferred ; boil it down te one-third of the quantity, tuea aua aitegetner auuut two bushels of pared, quartered and cored sweet apples, about one-third at a time, judging as te the quantity of apples ; then stir the whole mass constantly with a long handled wooden stirrer, reaching down te the bottom ; this stirrer must be from four or five inches bread at the bottom rounded a little te fit the bottom of the kettle, and have half a dozen or mere half-inch holes bored through it. The mass must be kept boiling and stirred until the whole is re duced te say one-half of the original quan tity or ciuer, assumes a aaric coier, auu is Derfect.lv smooth and palatable. Fer this purpose samples should from time te time be taken out and tasted. When done it should be put in jars, well-tied ever with paper, and placed in a cool place. Coloring Batter. A small creamery in Philadelphia, which readily disposes of all the butter it makes at profitable prices, never uses coloring matter of any kind. Although the pro duct is almost white in winter, the quality is uniformly geed, and a better price is paid for it than Ter the lngh-colereu nut ter, of geed quality, sold by .farm ers. It is made of Montgomery county cream from the vicinity of Conshe- hecken. and no adulterating matter of any kind is allowed te enter. Unfortu nately, tee many housekeepers in the pur chase of butter, are influenced by its color, and no matter what its quality may be, unless it has a golden hue they will net purchase it. On this account the majority of farmers who supply our markets with butter always artificially color it. Mr. llawlcy, at a recent meeting of the Onen-da-ra County Farmers' club, New Yerk, stated that from personal experience he finds that Indian meal fed te Jersey cows will give butter at all seasons the color and aroma of the product emanating from grass-fed cows ; but if this result can ue obtained from feeding cerumcal te Jer seys, thcre is no apparent reason why it could net be fed te all ether breeds with similar effect. At all events the experi ment is easy te niake, and is worth mak ing. Herse-Stable Floers. The long debated question as te the best material ler stable floors, is being again revived. A clay fleer was adhered te by seme for years, and such was the earnest ness of its advocates and the many argu ments brought te bear upon it, that we were induced some twenty years age te try it. In three or four months we had the planks back again, being satisfied of the disadvantages et clay ler this purpose. Our present fleer of plank is simply in clined a little from front te rear, where the usual gutter is made .te carry off the liquid voiding!. "We de net believe in sand, coal ashes, saw dust, asphaltum, flags, cobblestones or auy of these mod ern devices te injure horses. Thus far we have never noticed that this little in clinatien was in any way iujurieus ; and we doubt whether the wooden grating that we frequently sec placed ever the planking that some use would be advisable en the ground that the animal would be mere comfortable, while this movable grating or second fleer might lead te accidents. When a person can keep horses in geed, sound, healthy condition for five te seven years, as we have done en a careluiiy con structed plank flooring, inclining a little te the rear, it is just as well te be satisfied with it. De what ene will, holes will be dug by the stamping of the feet in the clay, and these will be filled with moisture which will necessarily result in scratches, quarter-crack, &c. If the clay is leveled off and beaten down daily, it will' make no difference. Seme time age we inspect ed a number of stables where many horses were kept, and we encountered only one which was composed of anything but weed. Of course there will be new things inven tiens spriuging up, which are te meet and overcome every objection, and there will be seme te adept them, but we shall be satisfied with what we have until there is something produced about which there will be no mistake. The Price of Products anil Land. In farming as in every ether business there will come round periods when it will be overdone, when prices of products will be low and that of land will fall as a con sequence. Sometimes a nionetary panic like in 1873 may cause this in whele or iu part, but we doubt if it is ever wholly se, as people must live and products will be consumed, provided there is uet au over ever yield of crops. In 1873 a few large capi talists failed and mainly helped te cause the great panic that ensued. These capi talists were unable te meet their engage ments, owing te embarrassments caused by being involved in a greater amount of railroad interests than they could carry. But the railroads were hampered by legis lation in the West which dreve away many of the foreign capitalists, as it did many of the Eastern capitalists of the United States. The farmers who were located along the lines of railroad increased se numerously, owing te the easy terms of fered by the railroad companies in selling land, that they raised mere feed than the country, or the world in fact, needed, and then turned te the railroads as the authors of their treubles. On the contrary the railroads had depended se much upon the sales of their lands and the business which the occupants of them would bring into their business, that tlwy lest sight of another fact, and ene of the greatest im portance, that the farming portion of the Western population grew out of all pro portion te the manufacturing and mechan ical portion of the community. It then became next te a necessity that the crops they" raised must be aent abroad and sold atwhatever prices could be obtained for them, sometimes net nearly amounting te the cost of production. In time, however, all these. things regu lated each ether. In truth these revulsiens are mere frequent with the manufacturer and mechanic than the farmer. Hew often de we see mills and shops closed for long periods iu consequence of an overstocked market, and thousands upon thousands of hands dependant upon their daily labors discharged ? The only remedy for it all is te wait uutil demand and supply regulate themselves, when things will proceed in the way that will meet the requirements and hopes et all concerned. When the products of the farm are low, land will fall With it. When they are compensat ing which will always be wheu the manufacturing, the mcchauical and .labor ing population increase everything be comes prosperous and paying. Withiu reach of large cities land will eiwivs Mirnnatid full value, and will no en rising in price as the products of the land I are mere and mere in demand. The same will always held geed when different points of affluent territory are penetrated by rail roads, enabling the farmer te send his crops te market at a satisfactory profit. Sluyniakcr, Agent for Reigurt's Old Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi cian et this county, who has extensively usoe the Brandy referred te in Ills regular practice It is commended te the attention of these a flictcd with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was never intended as a beverage, but te be used as a medicine of great potency in the cu re of some of the destructive diseases which sweep away their annual thousands of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pr sent te the favorable notice et invalids cspC' ciaily these alllictcd with that miserable dis ease Dyspepsia, a specitic remedy, which i3 notliing.mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with leeble appetite nnd mere or less debility, will lind this simple medicine, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their ills anil aches. Be it, hewevei strictly understood that we prescribe and iw but ene article, und that Is REIGART'S OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young iriend, It K SLAYMAKER. This Brandy has steed the test for years, and has never failed, as fiu as enr experience extends, and we theretere give it the preference ever all etner Brandies no matter with hew many Jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would suffice te buy all the Brandy te cure any such cose ei ascs. In proof of the curative powers et Reiffaxt's Old Brandy, in cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon nuiu bers of witnesses one case in particular we cite: A hard-working larmcr had been ailllctcu with an exhausti ve Dyspepsia ler a number of years; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; be hat! sour eructatiens con stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged tr. restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage he used McGrann's Reet Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new S reached at times, and in his discourses often ecluiincd earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advised te trv Relcrart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked up with astenlsmnenv, but after hearing et its wenderiul ctlccts iu the ceses of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a sound man,wi il. a stomach capable of digesting anything which hejehese te cat.
