A VelettrmMd Hen Wrttte- "" with Charred Stick toy MneBlIgBt. " Mere than 145,000 copies of Evange line' were sold in fourteen month," said Will. S. nays, the famous songwriter, the 'ether day te a reporter. The conversation was en the subject of his songs, their origin, number and history. Of all he has published, considerably ever 200, " Evan; eeline," "Mollie Darling" and "Nerah O'Neal " were probably the most popular. " Evangeline " is one of the most beauti ful popular compositions ever published in America, and just before the breaking out of the war was sung in every home and by every cempauy of singers in the land Strange te say, the author never received one cent for his composition, though at the usual royalty, three cents per copy, he would have made $4,350 out of it in four teen months. Hew many copies in all have been sold he does net knew, though it is still in demand, and the total number would probably reach 300,000. When " Evangeline " was first issued, it becanp immensely popular. The minstrels of ante, bellum davs. whose specialty, next te characteristic negre delineations, was sen timental ballads, sang tne eeautuui com position for quintet in every city in the land, and, as is usual with popular ballads, the minstrel tenor, tue iameus liampueu, of Campbell's Minstrels, flrst introduced it. "I was a wild young fellow when I wrote 'Evangeline,'" ceptiuuud Colonel Hays, " and it grew out of a frolic. Just before the war I was visiting ene summer up in Oldham county, near Lagrange. There was a party of gay young ladies visiting at the house also, most of whom have children new as old as I was then. Among them was a beautiful girl who re sembled the ideal picture of Longfellow's Evangeline' se closely that I called her by that name, and it clung te her as a nickname One evening we were all in vited ever te a frolic at the residence of Hen. Rebert D. Mallery, and all went. We danced and sang, and seen discovered that four of us could sing very nicely together. We tried, ' Come Where My Leve Lies Dreaming ' and ether popular quartets, and get along se nicely that we became quite enthusiastic ever our success. About 1 or 2 o'clock in the memiug we started te walk home down the read. The night was as bright as day, with the full moon bunging in the sky, and as we walked we sang. Finally we sat down in a nice nook in a field te rest, and 'Evan geline ' began te suggest ether songs te sing. "Til write you a song,' said I, 'if you'll premiso te sing it before we go lmma 'This was agreed te. On the opposite side of the read a rail fence had been tern away and a white plank feuce had been erected. Where we were sitting a party of negrees had been roasting ears of corn ever a fire, and the charred sticks lay all around. I gathered up a bundle of them under my arm, and, followed by the girls, walked ever te the fence. With the char red sticks I wrote the lirst verse of the song en the top plank of the fence, and the notes for four voices ou the four plauks beueath, making it a quartet. Then we steed off, and, as we all could read music, we sang it. The girls were delighted, and insisted en having a chorus, se I went down te end and wrote the chorus out ou the planks. Well, we sang it ever and ever, ai:d went home siegiug it. Next morning 'Evangeline' came down stairs humming the air and asked me te write it out and finish it. I told her I couldn't de it, but she might go down and copy it off the fence. She took an umbrella and a sheet of paper, and seen came back with words and music copied off. " Then she insisted en having another verse, and se I wrote another verse, en condition that I was te have a kiss for it, and she te have the music. She went home te St Leuis and sang ' Evaugoline' about thcre until it attracted attention, and she sent it back te me te have it pub lished. I sent that song te every music publisher in America, uutil the MS. was nearly worn out, and the best offer I re ceived for it was from llrainard, of Cleve land, who offered me $10 and tweuty-five conies of music. I dcclined it. Shortly after I was in Cleveland, aud Campbell's miustrells were thcre. I took the song te Campbell and we went te a music store and tried it. He said it was a great song, and sang it that night five times te persistent encores. Brain ard heard of the new song, went te hear it, aud then came te me te buy it. I was drinking in theso days aud was a regular ' of a feller,' se I up and told him that Jehu Heward Payne had died in a peer house, that Key, who wrote the ' Star Spangled Banner,' had died in destitution, and that the publishers iu America were determined te starve the composers out ; but I would make him a present of the ' Evangcline ' te show him hew little publishers knew of the value of compositions. Well,, it went selling right along like a whirlwind. Three months afterward he offered me $500 for another song like it, but I refused it, and have never written anything for him." Net long since Uncle Larry being in Londeu called at his ncice's heuse, and thereby astonished the stately footman who answered his ring : "Is Mr. Churchill at home?" (The footman shivers.) " Me Lud is in Ireland." "Humph! What's he doing in Ire land?" (The footman is silent with horror.) "Is Mrs. Churchill in?" (The footman quivers with indignation.) " Me Lady, sir, is net down stairs yet." " Net up ? Humph ! A pretty time of day te be in bed ! Well, you jut tell Mrs. Churchill " (The footman pales and is about te sum mon assistance te eject the audaafcus in truder, when a silvery laugh and a voice float down from ever the banisters. " I hear you, Uncle Larry ! Come right in !") The footman, bowing low, " O, sir, me Lud ! pardon me. If you please, me Lud, this way." m Bradford, Pa. DANIEL G. BAKER, Jy30-auG,13A20 Auditor. MEDICAL. TJEIGART'S OLD WINE STORE. Brandy as a Medicine. The loUewlng article was voluntarily sent te Mr. IL E. Slaymakcr, Agent for Reigait's Old Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi cian et this county, who has extensively usce the Brandy referred te in his regular practice It is commended te the attention of theso a flictedwlth Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was never Intended as a beverage, but te be used as a medicine of great potency in the en re of some of the destructive diseases which sweep away their annual thousands of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the favorable netice et invalids espe cially these alllicted with that miserable II -ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which ii nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with lceble appetite and mere or less debility, will find this simple medicine, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy erull their ills and aches. Be It, heffc-vri strictly understood that we prescribe and us but one article, aud that is KEIGARTS 0L BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising yenng friend, II E SLAYMAKER. This Brandy lias steed the tei't for years, ami has never failed, as fai as our cxxcrience extend, and we therefore glve 11 ine preicrcnce ever an einer umneics no matter with hew many jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would sufllcu te buy all the Brandy te euro any such case 01 ases. In proof of the curative powers et Reigart's Old Brandy, in cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon 11 11 111 bers of witnesses eue case in particular we cite: A hard-working tanner had licen aliiletea with an exhaustive Dyspepsia lern number of years; Ids stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con stantly 110 appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers aud stale bread, and as a beverage he used Met; rami's 'Reet Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new S reached at times, and in his discourses eltcn cclaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advised te trv Reigart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked up with astonishment, but after hearing et ill wendcrlul cllccts in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, lie at last consented te fellow our advice, lit used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a bound nian.wlit. a stomach capable of digesting any thing wliicl: hejehese te cat. He still keens it aud ihcs a lit teo occasionally; and since lie has this medi cine he has been of very little pecuniary bene fit te the doctor. A Practising Puysician. U. .
